DTI Mission Statement

We proclaim Him, warning and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ. I labor for this, striving with His strength that works powerfully in me.

Colossians 1:28-29

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Colossians 1:28-29, is the DTI Mission Statement. Paul’s passion was (is through DTI) to help every believer to reach the level of spiritual maturity that God has intended. If God’s intention is for believers to become spiritually mature, then one must ask, “why are so many believers immature”?

Our Purpose for the Workshop Is there spiritual weakness in the Body of

Christ? Why?

Discuss some reasons

Present solutions to the problem of

spiritual weakness in the Body to reverse the trend.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Define Discipleship or more correctly redefine discipleship. Is there spiritual weakness in the Body of Christ that you represent? (your church) Why? Present a solution(s) to the problem of spiritual weakness in the Body.

you are getting”.

What is the typical Church MODEL for healthy spiritual

growth?

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Let’s look at what we see as the “normal” way churches go about making disciples of Jesus Christ.

CORPORATE DISCIPLESHIP (Needed, but typically insufficient by itself to produce the desired results)

Presentation Notes
Most likely your church is involved in these “corporate” methods of discipleship? But yet, this method BY ITSELF isn’t producing the results that pastors and leaders desire.

Each local assembly of believers should seek to practice

Balanced Discipleship (BOTH Personal & Corporate discipleship are needed for healthy spiritual growth)

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Most leaders would agree that it’s a good thing to spend time individually with each new believer. When asked why they don’t do that, leaders will often say that they don’t have the time or the resources to accomplish that. So what’s the answer? Training people who CAN do it. Spread the responsibility out among the lay people. The biggest requirement for becoming a discipler is being faithful. This is, therefore, what we encourage church leaders to do. Find a few faithful men and women in your congregation and train them so they can mentor and spiritually parent each new believer. Why isn’t this being done now? 1) The typical leader may not know how to train believers to disciple others. 2) Discipleship has come to mean the “presentation of Biblical truth” in many churches. Often leaders present Biblical truth and then believe their responsibility has ended with sharing God’s Word, and assume that now the new believer’s spiritual growth is between that believer and the Holy Spirit. The problem is that in many churches, the idea is conveyed that to present God’s Word, you must have had Seminary or Bible schooling. Is it realistic to expect the typical Christian to have Bible school or Seminary training?

Commitment

A goal of the discipler should be to help the disciple to mature, function, be fruitful, and to spiritually reproduce. The benefits to the discipler are secondary.

Commitment

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Commitment has to do with the heart attitude of the discipler (spiritual parent) in regards to the spiritual welfare and development of the disciple. This is a commitment that goes beyond just presenting God's word. The biblical idea of a disciple is more of an “apprentice” than just a student.

A Disciple of Jesus is more than just a student, he’s an apprentice

What’s the difference?

• Student

• Disciple

- wants to know what the teacher knows - wants to be like the teacher

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The Biblical model of a Disciple is more of an “apprentice” than just a student. In the secular model of teaching (university) the student wants just to know what the teacher knows – they want information. The student doesn’t have to respect or have intimacy with the teacher. How the teacher lives their personal life is irrelevant. In the Biblical model of a disciple, the student wants to be LIKE the teacher.

Modeling

• We want the disciple to end up with the passion of the discipler.

• Modeling goes beyond just teaching. o How do you teach patience, or

faithfulness, or passion?

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Hopefully the biblical disciple (apprentice) will end up with the passion of the discipler. The discipler is a model to the disciple, in ways that go beyond that of a teacher and student. How do you teach patience, or faithfulness, or passion? These things are seen more than heard.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
To conclude, we believe that wherever believers gather, “Balanced” Discipleship should be practiced. In other words, both “Corporate” and “Personal” discipleship are needed for healthy spiritual growth. The two types of discipleship each have their unique roles, and they complement each other.

To help a believer through the transition from the habit of daily living in “self-dependence” to the habit of daily

living in “God-dependence.”

A newborn child requires an extra amount of individual attention. As the child matures guidance can increasingly take place in a group setting. Since each child is unique, it should be expected that both group and personal attention would be needed on the road to maturity.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Let’s look at an analogy.

When you bring a newborn baby home from the hospital, you don't just set them down and say, "Welcome to the family, Johnny. Make yourself at home. The towels are in the hall closet upstairs, the pantry is right here, the can opener is in this drawer. No crying after 10 p.m. If you have any questions there are lots of people in the family who would love to help you so don't be afraid to ask.”

You laugh and say that is ridiculous, but that is what usually happens to new Christians. Someone gets saved and starts going to church services, but never gets much personal attention. We devote 18 years to raising our children, but don't even spend six months helping a new Christian get started in understanding the spiritual world. As a result, many people have been Christians for many years, but have not grown very much.

So, new believers need someone to give them guidance and help them grow.

“A Biblical Model for Spiritual Parenting” (Discipleship)

1 Thessalonians 2:3-13 includes all the components of spiritual parenting.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
This model is Biblically based. We use the portion from 1THESSALONIANS 2 where Paul talks to the believers in Thessalonica as a model for spiritual parenting, also known as Biblical Discipleship. In the human baby the first several years of their human experience is the most formative part of their life. The same is true of the spiritual baby too. This is why God has chosen to use terminology that is paralleled by the human experience. The Lord says the new believer is Born Again, i.e. starting with a new birth. They are a spiritual baby, growing into spiritual children, and then moving into spiritual adolescence and on to spiritual maturity. All this is parallel with human development.

“A Biblical Model for Spiritual Parenting” (Discipleship)

1 Thessalonians 2:3-13 includes all the components of spiritual parenting.

1. THEY WERE SINGLE-MINDED IN PURPOSE :3-6 … so we speak, not to please men, but rather God, who examines our

hearts. For we never used flattering speech, as you know, or had greedy motives—God is our witness—and we didn’t seek glory from people, either from you or from others. Although we could have been a burden as Christ’s apostles

2. THEY CARED FOR THE BELIEVERS AS A MOTHER CARES FOR HER CHILDREN :7-8 … instead we were gentle among you, as a nursing MOTHER nurtures

her own children. We cared so much for you that we were pleased to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us.

3. THEY BECAME “ROLE MODELS” TO THE NEW BELIEVERS :9-10 For you remember our labor and hardship, brothers. Working night and

day so that we would not burden any of you, we preached God’s gospel to you. You are witnesses, and so is God, of how devoutly, righteously, and blamelessly we conducted ourselves with you believers.

In verses 7-8, Paul tells how he cared for the believers like a mother cares for the welfare of her new born baby.

Paul’s concern for the believers went beyond that of just a “teacher.” He was committed to their spiritual welfare and growth.

2 Cor. 11:28-29 … there is the daily pressure on me of concern for all the churches. Who is weak without my being weak? Who is led into sin without my intense concern?

2 Cor. 2:4 For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears; … that you might know the love which I have especially for you.

2 Cor. 12:15 I will most gladly spend and be expended for your souls.… Col. 1:28-29 … that we may present every man complete (mature) in

Christ. For this purpose also I labor, striving according to His power, which mightily works within me.

Just as a new mother cares for her baby, she is also committed to their well-being. That caring goes beyond just teaching the child information These are some verses that shows emotions and attitude such as: intense concern, anguish of heart, with many tears, spend and be expended, I labor, I endure all things

Presentation Notes
In verses 9-10, Paul tells how he was a role model to the believers.

A discipler is a “model” (real, transparent) for the disciple. The goal is for the disciple to emulate the

convictions and passion of the discipler.

1 Cor. 4:15-16 (Paul to the Corinthian believers) For if you were to have countless tutors in Christ, yet you would not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel. Therefore I exhort you, be imitators of me.

Phil. 3:17 (Paul to the Philippians) Brethren, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us.

Phil. 4:9 The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

2 Thess. 3:7-9 For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example, because we did not act in an undisciplined manner among you, … in order to offer ourselves as a model for you, so that you would follow our example.

1 Tim. 4:12 (Paul to Timothy) in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe.

2 Tim. 3:10-11 Now you followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, perseverance, persecutions, and sufferings,…

These are just a sampling of verses that teach us how to be model to other believers. Remember new (er) believers are watching older believers as they seek to learn what is correct Christian behavior.

4. THEY GAVE INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION AND INSTRUCTION AS A FATHER :11-12 As you know, like a FATHER with his own children, we

encouraged, comforted, and implored EACH one of you to walk worthy of God, who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.

5. THE WORD OF GOD WAS AN ESSENTIAL COMPONENT

OF DISCIPLESHIP :13 This is why we constantly thank God, because when you received the message about God that you heard from us, you welcomed it not as a human message, but as it truly is, the message of God, which also works effectively in you believers.

The Word of God is an essential component to the discipleship process.

Biblical truth is an essential component of Biblical discipleship.

1 Cor. 8:1-2 … Knowledge makes arrogant, but love edifies. If anyone supposes that he knows anything, he has not yet known as he ought to know;

Eph. 4:11-16 … for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. As a result, we are no longer to be children, …

Col. 1:28-29 We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete (mature) in Christ.

1 Thess. 2:13 For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe.

But there is a danger if we only provide biblical knowledge. A Christian cannot be spiritually mature without Biblical understanding, but a Christian may have much Biblical knowledge and yet not be spiritually mature.

“A Biblical Model for Spiritual Parenting” (Discipleship)

1 Thessalonians 2:3-13 includes all the components of spiritual parenting.

God had these things written to help us understand that discipling a new believer has to do with a relationship between a person that’s going to act like a father and a mother (spiritual parent) and a child. God pictures the new believer as a spiritual baby that needs individual attention.

Typical Modern Church Congregation

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Leaders typically are perceived to be “trained”, but don’t feel they have the necessary time to devote to each individual.   Followers, on the other hand, usually have more time, but don’t feel they are adequately trained to meet the needs of new believers. God in His wisdom designed the Church as a “body”, the Body of Christ, of which He is the Head. As is recorded clearly in the 1st letter to the Corinthians, He placed the members of the Body in such a way that they would be interdependent, and share responsibilities and service that are initiated and directed by the Holy Spirit to accomplish His purposes. He never intended that a special category of believers (leadership) should carry the load, but rather the responsibilities of service should be spread across the Body.

Typical Modern Church Congregation

And He personally gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, for the training of the saints in the work of ministry, to build up the body of Christ, until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of God’s Son, growing into a mature man with a stature measured by Christ’s fullness. …But speaking the truth in love, let us grow in every way into Him who is the head—Christ. From Him the whole body, fitted and knit together by every supporting ligament, promotes the growth of the body for building up itself in love by the proper working of each individual part. (Ephesians 4:11-16)

What specifically would they look at? How the people under you are working. Here are people that the trainers are supposed to equip. The success of the trainer would be determined by how effective are the people that are equipped. How long would this trainer remain as an employee of the company if he were hired to train people and these people were not functioning properly. How long would he remain as an employee?

Maybe it’s time to consider adding the personal one-on-one model?

Typical Discipled And Undiscipled Believers

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Let’s look at the typical results that can be expected when a new believer is given personalized individual attention during the critical formative development period of their Christian life, and the typical results that can be expected if the new believer is not given the needed attention during that time. Obviously there are those who grow and have a reasonable fruitful spiritual life in spite of having received little personal attention – but they are the exception.

Typical Discipled And Undiscipled Believers

• Increasing dependence on God (Master-servant)

• Increasing God-reliance (Faith walk)

• Focus on inward transformation (producing Godly behavior)

“It’s about God!” (“dog attitude”)

TYPICAL “DISCIPLED” BELIEVER

• God is my “Junior” Partner (up to 49% control)

• God is my “Co-pilot” (God is on standby)

• Focus on behavior modification

• Self-dependent

“It’s about me!” (“cat attitude”)

TYPICAL “UNDISCIPLED” BELIEVER

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Discipled believer – The new Christian who receives personal attention and guidance in their new walk with the Lord will typically find the transition to a Master-servant relation relatively natural. The believer who understands and yields to His lordship will increasingly perceive the Lord as the One around whom their life revolves, in contrast to the believer who still thinks that they’re the one around whom the world revolves. It has been suggested that most dogs display a loyalty to their master in a way that could serve as a model for believers, in that they tend to understand their role as submissive and obedient servants. They typically don’t expect to be served by their master. Undiscipled believer – If a new believer is not given adequate personal attention and guidance during this important first phase, but is simply placed into corporate settings with other Christians, they can usually be expected to display spiritual traits that are characteristic of the peers with whom they associate. Left on their own they will typically adopt a lifestyle in which they will attempt to balance their spiritual and secular lives in an acceptable way, resulting in a compartmentalization of their life. Many older Christians honestly yearn for a closer relationship with God, but have never had that relationship clearly explained to them. A distorted “partnership” mentality is often the outcome of a failure to receive proper biblical guidance as to what the normal Christian life should look like. It has been suggested that a cat could represent these believers who have not yet yielded to His Lordship, in that the typical cat tends to display an attitude of indifference, unsubmissiveness and independence.

And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, commit to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. (2 Tim 2:2)

Four Generations of disciples

1.Paul 2.Timothy 3.Faithful Men 4.Others

Presenter
Presentation Notes
One of the goals we discussed earlier was spiritual reproduction. How many generations of disciples should we expect to make?   Let’s look at the model that Paul created from 2Timothy 2:2.
Presenter
Presentation Notes
The figures in the left-hand column represent the number of converts that could be attained to if a Christian were able to win one person to Christ each and every day of the year. The figures in the right-hand column represent the number of fruitful disciples that could be attained to if each Christian would be faithful during each 6 month period to disciple just one other new convert to a level of spiritual maturity whereby the newer Christian could be used by the Lord to in turn disciple another convert. The figures in the right-hand column are less impressive at the beginning, but as can be seen, have a much greater long-term benefit.

One-on-One Discipling

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The model in the chart looks something like this. But by implementing what we call a TTT approach we can actually accelerate the growth of the church.

• The Great Commission – “Go and make Disciples” • Matt 28:18-20

• Paul setting the Goal • Colossians 1:28-29

• Holy Spirit (through Scripture) depicting the new believer as a Spiritual Baby

• Paul depicting himself (discipler) as a Spiritual Mother and Father • 1 Thess. 2:3-13

Colossians 1:28-29

So, naturally, we proclaim Christ! We warn everyone we meet, and we teach everyone we can, all that we know about him, so that, if possible, we may bring every man up to his full maturity in Christ. This is what I am working at all the time, with all the strength that God gives me. Colossians 1:28-29 J.B. Phillips New Testament
