WHAT IS A PODCAST?

In the simplest sense, podcasts are audio or video

recordings which are usually done in MP3 or MP4

formats for distribution over the web, the computer or

on handheld devices.

The term Podcasting is a blend of two words, iPod

and Broadcasting.





WHY SHOULD PODCASTS BE USED IN

INSTRUCTION?

Podcasts allow teachers to:

y Incorporate audio into your class

y Rediscover the power of the spoken word byutilizing new technologies to communicate withstudents

y Bring other ´voicesµ into the class

y Stimulate students· interest in the subject byusing different media formats



HOW CAN PODCASTS BE USED IN THE

CLASSROOM?

Teacher·s can use podcasts to:

Introduce the lesson

Gain attention and motivate students toparticipate in the lesson

Give additional information to students using a

medium other than text

Provide instructions or directions to complete atask

Students can create their own podcasts:

Interviewing persons of interest

Class projects

For communication and sharing of ideas

Audio stories



STEPS FOR CREATING YOUR PODCAST

Step 1: Select appropriate content

y Use content that is easy to learn (avoid figures, drawings)

y Recordings of classroom lectures may not be the best use of podcasting.

y Narrow the focus of a podcast.

y

Chunk the information on your podcast identify important concepts or issues students tend

to struggle with and develop a podcast episode foreach.

y Prepare or motivate learners for learning newcontent

Arouse interest and curiosity about a new topic toincrease learner motivation

Inform students of the learning outcomes orbenefits of learning new content

Influence feelings and attitudes about a topicprior to a lecture or reading assignment

TIPS FOR PREPARING YOUR CONTENT

State the content into a problem or challenge andexplain how it can be addressed

Use voices of other experts interviewed about specific

topics of interest to your students in the course.

Use a case story that illustrates a key topic or learninggoal.

Share a personal story

Capture dialogues with opposing viewpoints. This is

often done on radio and television talk shows.

Keep the length of a podcast short- between 3 and 15minutes.

y Don't lecture

y Try not to read a script verbatim

y Write an outline to help keep you on trackduring the recording session.

y Talk naturally as if you were talking withthe students face-to-face

Step 1: Write a script

A good first step to creating podcasts is to plan what

you have to say.

The script can be a simple outline of what you will say
