Heidelberg Symphony is one of Melbourne’s most acclaimed orchestras, enabling it to attract elite musicians who enjoy performing music from the eighteenth to the twenty-first centuries.

Its annual concert series delights audiences with a wide range of exciting repertoire from the most demanding symphonies, challenging guest artist concerto performances to much loved theatre and orchestral classics.

The orchestra enjoys an enviable international reputation, having undertaken tours to Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Spain and Great Britain, performing in a wide range of cultural venues.

As a non-profit organisation that receives no government funding, Heidelberg Orchestras Inc. relies entirely on income from ticket sales, memberships, sponsorships, fundraising events, and donations to cover the cost of presenting its annual concert series.

Heidelberg Symphony will perform one Sunday afternoon concert on Sunday 1 July at 2.30pm. Subscribers who wish to select this concert as one of their four for the year should tick the relevant box on the booking form as well as the Annual Subscription box.

S E AT I N G A L LO C AT I O N

Existing subscribers seeking to retain their 2017 seating allocation should complete and post the attached booking form to The Concert Manager, Heidelberg Orchestras Inc. by February 1, 2018 or phone 9005 1792.

Subscribers who wish to change their current seating allocation should enclose a note specifying their request when returning the completed 2018 booking form. Changes can only be made when seating becomes available and in strict order of the date on which the request was received.

New subscription requests are accepted at any time and processed in order of receipt. Seat allocation takes place after February 1, 2018.

Subscriptions and individual tickets should be booked well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Single tickets can be purchased online, by completing the booking form or by calling 9005 1792. Single tickets will be issued after February 15, 2018.

An ever-popular community event, Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra’s Children’s Concerts have introduced hundreds of young children to all the instruments of the orchestra in a fun afternoon of music and storytelling for the whole family.

This year’s concerts will include a performance of Prokofiev’s much-loved classic, Peter and The Wolf.

Christopher Kopke enjoys a busy schedule conducting, performing, teaching, examining and adjudicating at competitions and music festivals.

A graduate of the University of Melbourne with both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in music, he is currently the Principal Conductor of the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra (since 1994), a violin examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB), and is the Head of Strings at Genazzano FCJ College in Melbourne.

Ketèlbey’s Sanctuary of the Heart is based on an old melody used as the traditional chant for the Kol Nidrei during the Jewish liturgy. Saint-Säens’ Bacchanale is a percussion-driven, celebratory dance from Samson & Delilah, the only one of his operas still regularly performed. Haydn’s Oboe Concerto has many long phrases, requiring dexterity and stamina from the soloist. The lyrical writing in Bellini’s Oboe Concerto is so indicative of his style that one could easily believe it to belong to one of his operas. Copland’s The Tender Land Suite is a simple story of a young woman’s coming of age, richly painted with his quintessential American harmonies. Finally, in celebration of Bernstein’s Centenary this year, Slava! A Political Overture is a vaudevillian razzamatazz tune, filled with amazing modulations and sliding trombones.

Leonard Bernstein continues to be one of the most widely performed composers of the twentieth century. Candide is an operetta and is in the musical tradition of Broadway theatre, yet the overture has become a staple of the symphonic orchestral repertoire. South-American-born Marquez’s composition, Danzón No. 2, is a distinctive urban dance from the Veracruz region in Mexico. It is rhythmic and spirited, but also nostalgic, with melodies of smouldering sensuality. In contrast, the improvisatory nature, eloquent counterpoint and virtuosic passages make the Bruch Violin Concerto the most alluring he has written. Tchaikovsky’s Méditation is built on beautiful melodies with Russian inflection, and the solo part exemplifies his mastery of violin writing. West Side Story stands as an essential, influential chapter in the history of American theatre.

Huapango is a form of Mexican mariachi music with its typical sound of trumpets and string instruments. Moncayo’s Huapango is the unofficial second national anthem of Mexico and has entered into the classical symphonic repertory. Intermezzo, by Granados, one of Spain’s most important composers, creates a haunting and hypnotic melody in this orchestral interlude and is one of his most memorable works. The Gliere concerto is one of the most ambitious works for Horn and is very florid and romantic, while Mozart’s second Horn Concerto is a treasure house of melody, and was written for his friend Leutgeb. Hollywood composer Danny Elfman turned heads with his Batman score. This music redefined the composer in many ways – rather than simply representing a comic book movie, it is a veritable romantic fantasy epic.

One of Tchaikovsky’s most loved works and among the most famous in the classical music canon, the first Piano Concerto is a deeply expressive and romantic ‘tour de force’. It is majestic and measured, with finger-twisting prestissimos, and is flamboyant, fast and feisty. Shostakovich dedicated his 12th Symphony to the memory of Lenin. This symphony is an example of a program symphony, because the music is supposed to evoke extra-musical ideas. The Symphony has a subtitle, “The Year 1917”, as each of the movements is named for a different part of the Russian October Revolution.

A N N E G I L B YOboist Anne Gilby has a distinguished career as a performer and educator. She studied in Europe, achieving her Reifeprüfung (Performance) Diploma with Distinction in Detmold (Germany). Anne has held the position of Principal Oboist with orchestras in Germany and Australia. She has performed as soloist and Principal with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and has been guest Principal with all six Symphony Australia orchestras. Academic positions include Head of Woodwind at the Victorian College of the Arts and Lecturer at Edith Cowan University and at the Monash University School of Music.

R O M A N P O N O M A R I O VRoman received his Master’s Degree from Rice University (USA) and a Bachelor of Music Degree (Honours) from the University of Melbourne. He has performed as guest Principal Horn with the Melbourne Symphony, Queensland Symphony, Auckland Philharmonia, Malaysian Philharmonic, Adelaide Symphony, Western Australian Symphony, Melbourne Chamber Orchestra and Orchestra Victoria. Roman has won a number of solo and chamber

music competitions and has appeared as a soloist with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and recorded a solo recital for ABC Classic FM.

N AT S U K O Y O S H I M OTONatsuko Yoshimoto is an international soloist and chamber musician. A graduate of the Yehudi Menuhin School (England), she has performed as a soloist with many world renowned orchestras including London Symphony, Tokyo Symphony, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and Melbourne Symphony. Natsuko is currently the concert master of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, and was the leader of the Australian String Quartet and then the Grainger Quartet until the end of 2008. She has given many world premieres of works by Australia’s most prominent composers and has recorded for Virgin Classics, ABC Classics, Melba Records and Tall Poppies. An ever-popular guest artist with HSO, Natsuko is Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra’s ‘Soloist in Residence’.

H O A N G P H A MHoang Pham is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and the Australian National Academy of Music. He was the winner of the 2013 ABC’s Young Performers Award, of Melbourne Recital Centre’s Great Romantics Competition in 2010, the 2005 Lev Vlassenko Competition, Best Australian at the 2008 Sydney International Piano Competition and a prize winner of the Bösendorfer and Cleveland International piano competitions. He has appeared with the Melbourne, Queensland and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras, with the New London Orchestra in the UK, at Musica Viva’s Huntington Estate Festival and in recitals in the USA, UK and France.
