Eastern Indonesia, Future Tourism OfferThere is no doubt that Eastern Indonesia offers stunning nature panorama and unique culture that can be great tourism potentials. However, this does not mean that those potentials can en-courage areas in Eastern Indonesia to develop their tourism sector.A number of areas have captured this opportunity beforehand, such as West Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi and Raja Ampat Papua. Considering the promising opportunity, some areas have ac-tively promoted their tourism potentials.Idonesian Tourism Promotional Board (BPPI) has also seen this potential and focuses on promotion on potentials in Eastern Indonesia. Chairperson

of BPPI, Yanti Sukamdani said that currently, there are many areas categorized as disadvantaged areas that have amazing tourism potentials and can be developed to boost the local economy.Unfortunately, most of this type of areas are still lacking in infrastructure to support tourism sector.Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sapta Nirwandar agreed that eastern Indonesia has great tourism potentials. The potentials in disadvantaged and border areas should be managed and designed into special-interest tourism. “This is perfect to be developed considering the great prospects,” said Sapta.Sapta expects that special interest tourism like adventure tourism targeting on young people can encourage them to love their country more. Thus, eastern Indo-nesia is suitable to be offered as future tourist destination if we can work together to develop the region. Let’s introduce and promote eastern Indonesia as beautiful region and worth a visit.

Esty Reko Astuti, Director General Marketing and Tourism on behalf of Ibu

Marie Elka Pangestu, Minister of Tourism and Economy Creative of RI, officially opens the Bali and Beyond Travel Fair 2014, held at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC), Nusa Dua, Bali through June 14, 2014, with ribbon cutting.

BALI & BEYoND TRAVEL FAIR (BBTF) 2014 is expected to become Bali’s largest tourism event held an-nually. In its premiere run, the event involves 601 buyers from 55 coun-

tries including the United States and Indonesia, as well as 290 sellers comprising hotels and resorts, tour operators, tourist attractions and governmental organizations. This event will serve as a benchmark on the implementation of activities in travel and tourism, in Bali and Indo-nesia as a whole.

This event serves the inbound, outbound international travel mar-kets and also domestic travel mar-kets by involving various domestic and international government and private tourism institutions. By linking

sellers and buyers in a forum, Bali & Beyond Travel Fair is determined to promote the tourism industry through business forums, and direct promotions with the best MICE and tourism management implementa-tion systems.

For the event organizers and buy-ers from Indonesia’s 33 provinces as well as several other nations from across the globe, BBTF 2014 will mediate the business meeting plan-ning and negotiations (Buyer meets Seller) in addressing their long term needs in the tourism industry.

Travel companies, hotel and resort groups, cruise operators, convention planners, venue or-ganizers and travel buyers may seize opportunities over the three days of business meetings held to improve their product excellence in the Indonesian and Asia Pacific markets.

During the press conference Ibu Esty said: “We are very proud on the success of BBTF 2014 and we do hope that this event will be the role model of events of its kind in the near future. Especially for BBTF, we do hope that this can be an annual event and gives a signif-icant contributions to other regions in the country where our target visitors of 9,5 million people can be achieved. At the same time we are very happy with the success of BBTF 2014 and the coordination from central government to local government have been very posi-

tive. However, we do need your feedback for the better organiza-tion of BBTF in years to come.”

Bali & Beyond Travel Fair (BBTF) 2014 serves a significant role for Bali and other travel desti-nations in Indonesia for B2B Travel & Tourism purposes and promises to present a not-to-be-missed oc-casion with participants from all over Indonesia and the world.

Through excellent accessibil-ity, connections with large cities worldwide, adequate infrastructure and well-known reputation as an international tourism destination, the island of Bali is well set out to host the international event.

Recently, with the rapid rise and growth of the property sector and hotels and resorts all over Indo-nesia, Bali & Beyond Travel Fair (2014) is also intended to contrib-ute in improving and filling the fast increasing number of hotel rooms

in Bali and beyond.BBTF 2014 chairman commit-

tee I Ketut Ardana, SH who is also head of the Association of the In-donesian Tour and Travel Agency (ASITA) Bali chapter, stated: “We are very grateful that the event ran well and according to plan. Indeed it was a long and tedious challenge with various limitations coming into count especially in budgeting and experience in rolling out an activ-ity of this scale. We’d also like to thank all for their great support”.

Ketut Ardana further hoped that the event shines light for a better future for Bali and Indonesia’s tour-ism and can also become a learn-ing ground for related institutions especially those directly involved in tourism. All so that in the end, the Targeted Business Transac-tions between Seller and Buyer of Rp 2 – 4 Trillion can be achieved.

As a first step, the i m p l e m e n t a t i o n BBTF in Nusa Dua

Convention Center some time ago was considered to be quite successful. Indeed, there is still

shortage here and there, said Gusti Kadek Sutawa, CEo of Puri Saron Group. However, this big step should be appreciated since Bali will get more promotion by having this

event held on the island.Buyers can come direct-

ly to Bali and other areas in Indonesia could take ad-vantage of Bali as a tour-ism gate. Therefore let’s unite for a joint promotion.

Eastern Indonesia has promising tourismSeeing the potential of marine

tourism in eastern Indonesia, the Indonesian Tourism

Promotion Board (BPPI) begins to focus on the promotion of potential tourist destinations in eastern Indonesia.

This is in line with the Ministry of Rural Development (KPDT) which has Featured Products of Regency (PRUKAB) that focuses on the natu-ral resources and tourism develop-ment.

This is explained in the discussion on “Role of the Mass Media in Pro-moting Indonesian Tourism Poten-tials”, Sunday (06/22/2014) evening that concludes that tourism promo-tion in border areas are potential to mobilize tourists to enter Indonesia.

Discussion that was initiated by BPPI and the Tourism and Creative

Economy Journalists Forum in Indie Travel Mart held from 20 to 22 June 2014 in the FX Mall Jakarta. A wide variety of tour packages that are of-fered by this community presents an exciting adventure exploring the beauty of Indonesia.

Chairperson of BPPI, Yanti Su-kamdani said that many areas are still largely categorized as disad-vantaged areas have tremendous tourism potential and can be devel-oped to boost the local economy as well as foreign tourist arrivals to the country.

“This year, tourist destination mostly chosen by tourists is the sea, where they can do the diving, snor-keling, beach-walking, and enjoying its beauty. Now we see that Eastern Indonesia has much marine poten-tial that can be offered to tourists,

“said Yanti in FX Mall, Jakarta, Sun-day (06/22/2014).

Unfortunately, most of the areas in the category of disadvantaged areas still have issues regarding infrastruc-ture. “This is what we will give prior-ity to so that promotion can be done, we won’t do active promotion if the areas are not ready yet with the sup-porting facilities. There should be intervention from the local people,” said Yanti.

“Enjoying a tourist destination is not enough by just relying on the ease of access and transport, but tourists also certainly expect decent accommodation and souvenirs to take home with. I think we also need to work together with the local indus-try, “she said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sap-

ta Nirwandar said there was great potential in disadvantaged and border regions to be developed for the purpose of special interest tourism. “It’s great to be developed in the future because its prospects are bright,” he said.

Sapta expects special interest tourism, such as adventure tour-ism that is targeting young people could encourage them to love their own country more.

Political Expert Staff of the KPDT, Rahmat Tatang Baharudin said that the data shows that the population in eastern Indonesia when compared to the area is only 30 per cent. It is inversely pro-portional to the western region of Indonesia with a population of 70 percent while the total area is only 30 percent.

“Therefore, eastern region could be the future of the tourism if we can develop it wisely,” said Ta-tang.

This idea receives positive re-sponse from the mass media rep-resentative, Tri Wibowo, Chairman of the Tourism and Creative Econ-omy Journalists Forum who was present that night.

According to Tri Wibowo, the role of mass media in the promotion is certainly very influential to encour-age the development of tourism in the country. It is very helpful to control and trigger local govern-ments as well as investors. Con-tinuous Coverage will give birth to a variety of input from the public to the government, both central and local.

“At least, tourism destinations can be said to be ready to be promoted by the media when it involves three things namely ac-cessibility, accommodation and at-tractions (3A),” he said.

If this has been fulfilled, con-tinued Tri Wibowo, then effective information will be obtained. How-

ever, although the theme is promo-tion, tourism journalists should be honest and can give real informa-tion by continuously seeing the progress. “Usually there will be certain changes in a region within six months. “Media shouldn’t pro-vide information, which is different from the real one so that tourists won’t be disappointed, “he said.

After discussion, Sapta Nirwan-dar launched a movement of “In-donesia Moves” by symbolically breaking a jug. It was then con-tinued by visiting booths selling unique tour packages that are pop-ular among young people. (Erwin)

This is the first time Bintan Beach Jazz 2014 held in TRIKoRA Beach, Bintan, Riau

Islands, on Saturday (21/06/2014). The event is held by Indonesian Tourism Promotion Board (BPPI) and aims to promote tourism in Bintan island in order to attract more tourists.

Evening breeze on the TRIKoRA beachfront combined with strum-ming of guitar and pounding bass of the musicians enlivened Bintan Jazz 2014 which was held right in front of the 4-star Sahid Beach Resort. Bin-tan Jazz 2014 presents the leading jazz musicians, including wonderful band and Audrey.

Rachmat, one of the audiences feel happy watching the first jazz per-formance in Bintan. “I was amused for free musical performance is rare-ly found here,” he said excitedly.

Jazz music became a magnet for visitors of Bintan Island who are mostly from Singapore. Considering the market is for high-end travelers, jazz is considered to be an ideal means of promotion.

BPPI chairperson, Yanti Sukam-dani said the goal of the jazz con-cert is to promote tourism potentials of Riau, especially Bintan to foreign

tourists.“Travelling to Bintan Island, tour-

ists are not only presented with the beauty of the exotic white sandy beaches, crystal clear sea water, various rocks, mangrove forests and a variety of marine sports, but also a charming resort,” said Yanti dur-ing the opening of Bintan Jazz 2014 at TRIKoRA Beach, Bintan, Riau Islands, on Saturday (06/21/2014) night.

Night was crawling, but the enthu-siasm of the musicians and the au-diences did not go down. Musicians who are mostly first performed in Bintan are quite excited to entertain tourists and locals.

on the same occasion, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sapta Nirwandar explains that Riau Islands and Bintan Island have hosted event that is already well known in foreign countries, such as Tour de Bintan and Bintan Triathlon.

“Bintan Jazz will surely comple-ment Bintan as one of main tourist destinations in Indonesia,” Sapta said.

Sapta added that access to the island of Bintan is sufficient, either through the air or sea port of Bintan

Telani and Sri Bintan Pura in Tan-jung Pinang.

The jazz concert certainly attracts the attention of the local community and foreign tourists. They enjoy a jazz concert that was first held at the Trikora Beach. But unfortunately the governor and the regent were un-able to attend the event.

Bintan Island itself is the largest island in the Riau Islands province that consists of 3,000 large and small islands stretching across Sin-gapore and Johor Bahru Malaysia.

Bintan has many beaches with exotic climate and conditions. on this island visitors can also enjoy lo-cal history and culture, including the Kota Piring Palace which is located on the island of Biram Dewa or Pen-cil Monument, and couplets com-posed by Raja Ali Haji on Penyengat Island which is the icon of Tanjung Pinang. Do not miss the fresh sea-food offered at affordable prices dur-ing your stay on Bintan Island.

Well, for those of you who have never come to Bintan please see for yourself the natural beauty of the island of Bintan. Stay at the Sahid Beach Resort while enjoying the beautiful beaches plus jazz music .... it’s such as perfect life. (Bowo)

Komodo Travel Mart was held in Swissbel Inn Kristal Kupang on 17 – 20 June 2014. There

are many expectations from buyers, sellers and the community towards the event initiated by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy and the provincial government of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) that there will be significant transaction takes place.

Unfortunately, the expectation cannot be fully fulfilled considering the number of buyers and sellers participated in the event far beyond the expectation.

Head of Tourism and Creative Economy Department East Nusa Tenggara Alexander Sena said that ‘EnTex that blended with KTM is a form of realization of the govern-ment commitment to make NTT as a tourism province. “The event is designed as the meeting venue for buyers from outside NTT and overseas with sellers from NTT,” he said.

Director of Flobamora Event Emil Bei said that the 1st KTM held in Labuan Bajo (West Manggarai) in 2013, the transaction value earned was Rp 9 billion with 60 buyers. Emil admitted that the number of buyer in 2013 was bigger for the event was carried out after the event of Sail Komodo so that tourism practitio-ners used the moment to sell and buy tourism packages in NTT.

“When the event is held in Ku-pang, there are many tourism prac-titioners that have not yet known the tourism potentials in Kupang and its surrounding areas. This chal-lenge should be dealt with in order to develop tourism potentials in NTT,” said Emil. Emil is committed to make Kupang as the entrance gate of tourism in NTT and later to make the province as one of the world tourist destinations. He admit-ted that through good cooperation with all parties, a number of break-throughs in tourism sector will be done for the development of tourism industry in NTT. The most important thing in terms of tourism develop-ment in NTT is quality tourism. The

aspect that will be developed is eco-tourism. Thus, tourists will visit NTT due to its environmental quality, cul-ture and other aspects that still have high quality.

NTT Governor Frans Lebu Raya said that the implementation of Sail Komodo 2014 is the momentum of tourism industry in NTT. Tourism potentials in the province are huge and unique to be developed in order to improve the welfare of the com-munity. “Poverty shouldn’t make us give up. In contrary, it should make us work hard,” he said. Govern-ment and the entire people of NTT have committed to make East Nusa Tenggara as one of the world tour-ist destination for the benefit of the community as a whole. ***

I recently visited Senang Hati Foundation in Tampak Siring (Gianyar Regency) with Melly

St. Ange and Mrs. Sunarni. I do not know much about this foundation, but often hear the name from Ni Putu Suriati or known as Bu Putu. She is the figure behind the forming of this foundation.

I firstly met Bu Putu in the be-ginning of May 2014. She is the founder of the foundation, which serves the disabled or people with different ability. Senang Hati Foun-dation is located in Tampaksiring, about 1.5 hour drive to the north from Denpasar. The office used to be a school and each class is now turned into rooms with differ-ent functions such as the exhibition room, dining room, bedroom, office and many more.

There is weightlifting equipment for the disabled in the yard. Bu Putu formed this foundation to as-sist the disabled on May 5, 2003. Through this non-profitable foun-dation, Putu provides support for

them in a form of training, psycho-logical assistance and the making of policies to support the disabled. “We invite the disabled to support each other and learn together,” she said.

Bu Putu said that before estab-lishing this foundation, she often felt unaccepted by her environ-ment. Especially considering that to most Balinese people, disabled are considered to be karma re-sulted from bad behavior of their ancestor in the past.

She has polio since she was 2 years old and both of her legs are paralyzed. There was nobody who could take her to school so that she never experienced formal edu-cation. However, it does not mean that she stop learning. She learned how to write, read and paint from her uncle. Painting has become her daily activity and thorough painting she knows more artists and disabled.

Her routine meeting with the disabled has inspired Bu Putu to establish foundation to assist the disabled. With great help from a number of local people and for-eigners, Putu established this foun-

dation. Senang Hati Foundation is a home for disabled from Bali and other areas in Indonesia.

Since 10 years ago, there has been 280 disabled who have stayed in the foundation. “once they are independent enough, they will leave the foundation,” said Putu. Most of them who have ‘graduated’ from Senang Hati Foundation are those who have become indepen-dent or got job in other places.

Putu shares a lot of sad and happy stories during her dedica-tion in this foundation. The biggest challenge is when there is no regu-lar donor for the foundation. She was once running out of rice and did not know what to serve to the disabled.

Melly St. Ange and Mrs. Sunarni routinely visit Senang Hati Foun-dation. They want to share joy and happiness with the disabled there so that they will always have hope for better future. Melly expects that more people are encouraged to help Senang Hati Foundation. “If you want to help, feel free to contact Senang Hati Foundation where a lot of disabled are still need help,” she said. ***

Traditional village of NGGELA

Nggela is a traditional village rich in magical atmosphere and still very natural located in the district of Wolojita. The village consists of nine custom houses (Sa’o Benga Dero, Sa’o Mberi Dala, Sa’o Ame Nggape, Sa’o Tani Mo’i, Sa’o Siga Bata, Sa’o Benga, Sa’o Labo, Sa’o Tua and Sa’o Siga) with each has different function, role and characteristic.

The village is located about

70km to the south of Ende and can be reached via land and sea transportation. It takes 3 hours to reach this village by land transport. Nggela is also known for ikat wav-ing crafts. There are a number of ikat waving artisans who still exist making various attractive waving motifs such as Lawo Butu, which is a kind of sarong worn by Mure dancers. Mure is a sacred dance from Nggela as a symbol of re-spect to the highest form (Du’a sai tana goka, NggaE sai watu dogu).

The dance is presented in certain occasion by dancers/girls who are descendants of the noble family/mosalaki. Nggela is also famous with its hot spring that has high level of sulphur, which can cure various skin diseases. Ae Wau is potential to be developed as health tourism. Japanese Cave in Roworeke

Located inside the complex of Maria Cave in Roworake village, there is a protection cave of Japa-nese soldiers in the period of the Second World War. It is situated in East Ende district that can be reached by motorcycle or car. The cave is 8km away from Ende to the east and can be reached in 15 minutes. The cave served as protection place when watching

the enemy or during the gun fight. The existence of the cave can be a historical evidence of the pres-ence of Japanese colonialism in Ende regency and Roworeke vil-lage in particular at that time.

Mbu’u Beach

Mbu’u Beach is located around 5 km from the city center and can be reached in 15 minutes by public transport or motorcycle. The beach is very conducive for

weekly recreational activities for city people.

Fishing and swimming while having fun with the family are perfect activities to be done here. Young coconut juice is available to refresh your body. Mbu’u beach also has direct view to Mount Meja and Koa Island. The activi-ties of the fishermen catching fish also add more color to the beauty of Mbu’u beach. The beach is an alternative place to see the sun-rise.

WEST SUMBA

WEST SUMBA

Culinary Tourism in West Sumba

Although it is still relatively sim-ple in terms of management, West Sumba has special traditional food that can be introduced as culinary tourism.

West Sumba or also known as the Land of Pasola has various traditional cuisines ready to be in-troduced and served to tourists visiting the region. It is the wife of West Sumba Regent who actively encourages people to continuously maintain the local cuisine consider-ing that the cuisine has great poten-tials to be introduced to tourists.

Special food from West Sumba consists of simple menu such as sautéed papaya flowers, salted fish or grilled fish. To be able to enjoy this menu, you can ask the kitchen at the budget hotel where you stay

in to cook it for you. Usually, some budget hotels provide lunch and dinner on request basis.

Another option is to buy fresh fish at the market and grilled them on the beach. Stalls serving Indone-sian food such as Padang Restau-rant, meatball stall, satay stall and Warung Jawa can easily be found everywhere in the region. Most of the shops, restaurants and gas sta-tion are close before 9 pm.

Custom House

The custom house of West Sum-ba people is a family or a big house (uma kalada). Similar to wanno ka-lada, uma kalada was also a house built by the first ancestor and it is inherited from one generation to

another.West Sumba people believe that

the ancestor spirit that has become like god (marapu) live in this house. The family heirloom is also stored in this house. The descendants of the founder of the house who still live there or have built new house are related to family relationship called kabisu. In one village, there are usually more than one kabisu and each has their own uma ka-lada that functions as the center of social-religious life of the related kabisu group.

Traditional house that is not cat-egorized as custom house is called ana uma (if it is built in the same village) or uma ouma (if it is called outside the custom village).

Ana uma means the house of children, which is the branch of custom house built by the young-er ancestors. Uma ouma means the house of field for it was firstly built around the garden or field for monitoring purpose. These kinds of houses are not considered as the

place where the ancestor spirits reside. Thus, they are not used as the center of ceremonial activities. Important ceremonies in the life cy-cle of the resident like wedding and funeral are performed in the main custom house as well as certain worshipping ceremonies.

In a homogeneous village (con-sists of more than one kabisu), custom house of one kabisu is dif-ferent from another based on the name given.

The name of a custom house can be based on the name of the person who built it, but mostly it is based on the ritual role he serves. The name of the house is also different in one village to another depending on the ceremony com-monly held in the village. For ex-ample is in Tambera village (Loli district) where there is a house named Uma Kalada Wogo owned by Wee Lowo Clan that serves as the guardian of the holy spring and rain caller. In the village of Dikita (Tanah Righu district), there is a house called Umma Pulluna that serves as a messenger for the rato.

The Custom village

West Sumba Regency is also known as The Land of A Thou-sand Villages. The region is full of custom villages spread from the remote areas to the center of the city. You might not believe that there is a traditional village in the center of the city, but that is where the uniqueness of West Sumba relies, an interesting mingling of modern and traditional aspect.

People of West Sumba mostly build their villages on the top of the hill. This is based on two main reasons, namely practicality and religious reason. In the past, inter tribes war often took place to fight for land. Therefore, highland was considered to be more practical to be used as a fort. In terms of re-ligious aspect, it refers to the pre historic concept that considered ‘the higher the place to love in, the closer the resident to the spirit of the ancestors and the gods.’ No matter what the reason is, the vil-

lage position which is on the top of the hill gives an aesthetic benefit, which is a beautiful view from the top.

There are two types of tradition-al villages known by the native of Sumba, namely the main village (wanno kalada) and the branch of the main village called wanno gol-lu. The main village is the one built by the first ancestor and serves as the center of various important custom rituals. Considering this important role, wanno kalada of-ten refers as the custom village. The branch village is built by the younger generation. This type of village is not the place where marapa reside; therefore it does not have any ritual role. Villagers need to go back to the main village for important ceremonies such as wedding and funeral. Thus, wan-no kalada can also be seen as a group identity.

Custom village of Sumba is sur-rounded by stone fence arranged orderly and completed with two

main gates. The entrance gate is called bina tama and the exit gate is called bina louso.

Stone or other symbols that have been sparked with the blood of sacrificed animals are put in each gate as a symbol of guard-ian spirit of the gate or known as marapu bina. A wanno kalada is usually occupied by more than one clan and each clan has one main custom house. These houses are built in rows surrounding a holy yard (natara), which is used as a place to hold various important ritu-als. Megalithic graves can be found around the natara and the custom

house. Sumbanese people build the tombs in front of their house so that they can stay close to the de-ceased relatives. The corpse posi-tion always faces the house so that they can watch the activities of the living.

In addition to the main function as a place to bury the corpse, the tombs are also used for other ac-tivities such as dry paddy or serve as a balcony to watch custom cer-emony held in natara. In addition to the tomb, there are some worship-ping objects spread in the middle of the custom village. The most com-mon one is katoda, a small wood-

en pole with flat stone underneath it as a place to put the offering for marapu. In certain village, there is watu kabala or the lightning stone, which is believed to come from the sky and purportedly can bring light-ning strike to people who have bad intention. Another one is the stem of a dead tree called adung. Adung was used as a pole to hang the enemy. War preparation ceremony was also held in front of the adung. Now, it is the preparation ceremony for boar hunting held in front of the adung during the holy month (wulla poddu) in around october until No-vember every year.

Festivity of the celebration of art and cultural festival and creative economy packed in

Legu Gam Festival has just ended. For two weeks (13-26 April) Ngara Lamo field was crowded by people. They came from Ternate, Tidore and even Sofifi, the capital of North Maluku Province.

The field located right in front of Ternate Sultanate Palace became the center of festival. A big stage was built for various traditional art performances. Legu Gam is an event initiated by the Sultanate and held on April every year along with the birthday of the current Sultan of Ternate, Mudaffar Syah, April 13. “Legu Gam is held to build com-

munication between people and the Sultan and vice versa,” said Boki Ratu Nita Buddhi Susanty, Queen of Ternate Sultan.

This year, the festival enters its 13th year and has the theme of “Kie Raha Expidition Unites the Archipel-ago.” Besides featuring various tra-ditional arts, the festival supported by Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy also holding unique and interesting traditional ceremony that attracts many tourists to visit. one of them is “Kaloli Kie”, which is a ritual of going around the island of Ternate while enchanting prayer. There are two types of ritual, namely going around the sea route or known as Kololi Kie Toma Ngalo and another

one is through the land route, which is known as Kololi kie toma nyiha.

Kololi Kie is one of the oldest ritu-als that has been performed since the time of the ancestors in Ternate and is part of the ritual of “Fere Kie”. Fere Kie is a pilgrimage ritual by climbing to the top of Mount Ga-malama. This time, Paradiso had the chance to join the Kololi Kie ritual via sea route.

Kololi Kie Toma Ngolo ritual is done by a boat parade forming an arrow. The boat in the front is the boat of re-ligious leader that leads the prayer. In certain points, the group will stop for praying. The boats are decorated so that they look attractive. For peo-ple and tourists who are interested

in watching closely the ritual, there is a special boat provided.

Besides Kololi Kie ceremony, there is a traditional dance perfor-mance which is also very interesting to watch, namely Legu-legu dance. The classical dance from Ternate is presented in special occasion and held in the area of the sultanate.

This year, Legu Gam holds Kie Raha Sea Exploration, an activity that invites people to visit four big sultanates that have ruled in North Maluku, namely: Bacan, Tidore, Jailolo, and Ternate.

People’s Party and Tourism Promotion

For 14 days, Legu Gam Festival held at Ngara lamo field was always crowded by people. The opening night was even more for it was en-livened by the performance of sing-

ers from Jakarta such as Anji, Cindy, Yopie latul and Paulina Goler.

This annual festival has become one of the events mostly waited by people of Ternate. It is the people’s party for North Maluku people and Ternate in particular. This event is also great opportunity for some people to earn more income. Peo-ple do not only come for watching the art performances, but also for selling food or souvenirs around Ngara Lamo.

Legu Gam also becomes promo-tional event for North Maluku tour-ism. “Although this festival is not the event organized by us, it doesn’t mean that it belongs exclusively to Ternate Sultanate. This festival be-longs to North Maluku and aims to promote North Maluku,” said Boki, who is also the Chairperson of Legu Gam 2014.

Every year Legu Gam has unique and different activity to perform that becomes the icon of the event. In 2011, the festival performed Soya-soya dance that involved more than 8,000 dancers. In 2012, the crazy bamboo dance was performed. It used 100 bamboos and involved 700 participants.

This year, Ternate Fashion Street becomes the icon of Legu Gam 2014. This activity involves young people to be creative in designing unique fashion presented on the street as the catwalk.

According to Tazbir, Director of Domestic Promotion Ministry of

Tourism and Creative Economy, this event can preserve the tradi-tional art and culture; it can also be tourism promotional event. It is ex-pected to boost tourist visit to North Maluku and Ternate in particular.

“We fully support the event and continue improving it in terms of or-ganization quality, so that it can at-tract more tourists,” said Tazbir.

Although it is welcomed enthusi-astically by people of Ternate and its surrounding areas, Paradiso gives some notes regarding this festival. First, the festival is still concentrated in Ngara Lamo. In the future, it is expected to use other venues around tourist destination in order to promote tourist destina-tions in Ternate. If possible, it would be great to hold the festival in the ancient fort such as around Fort Ka-lamata. Second, which is also very important, is how to pack the event so that it invites people to know more about the potentials of North Maluku. (Erwin)

There won’t be any tourists who want to go to a country if the toilets are not clean.

Considering this, for the third time, the Directorate General of Tourism Destination Development Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy gives the “Sapta Pesona Clean Public Toilet at Taman Rekreasi (Recreational Park) 2014”.

“Increased quality of toilet service management in the artificial recre-ational park has certainly become a reflection of the cultural identity of the Indonesian people, which in turn will increase the competitive-ness of Indonesia tourism in ASEAN and global level,” said Firmansyah Rahim, Directorate General of Tour-ism Destination Development (PDP) Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy.

This award is meant as an appre-ciation of government and in order to motivate management of recreation-al park in order to realize and imple-ment the elements of Sapta Pesona (the Seven Enchantments), which include safety, cleanliness, orderli-ness, comfort, beauty, hospitality, and enchanting memories.

“This event was firstly held in 2012. It is a follow-up of Clean Public Toilets Award at airports, museums, and zoos that began in 2007,” said Eni Budiardjo from the Indonesian Toilet Association (ATI).

“Toilet reflects the culture and identity of the nation. Together with tourism stakeholders, ATI continues improving the competitiveness of Indonesian tourism, which is now at the global level,” added Indonesian toilet observer, Nani Sumaryati.

Based on the competitiveness data from the World Economic Fo-rum, tourism competitiveness of Indonesian experiences significant progress, from rank 74 of 140 coun-tries and finally to the position 70 of the 140 countries. For ASEAN com-petitiveness, Indonesian tourism ranks 4.

“For this year, the Sapta Pesona Clean Toilets at Artificial Recreational Park is followed by 82 parks from 24 provinces in Indonesia,” said Chair-

man of the Indonesian Toilet Asso-ciation, Naning S Adiwoso.

Before conducting the review and assessment of the location, the jury first performed the selection of ad-ministrative assessment. “Based on the selection and administration, there were 62 recreational parks from 18 provinces in Indonesia that meet the criteria,” said Naning.

The jury consists of Naning S Adi-woso (Chairman of the Indonesian Toilet Association-ATI), Nani Su-maryati (Indonesia toilet observer), Eni Budiardjo (ATI), Sudaryatmo (Indonesian Consumers Foundation / YLKI), Gunawan Wibisono (Indo-nesia Leisure Park Business As-sociation / PUTRI), Sonny Warouw (Ministry of Health), and Tri Wibowo (Media).

“The assessment was conducted in the third week of May to July 2014, and the award will be given on 25 September 2014 in the framework of the World Tourism Day on 27 Sep-tember,” added Gunawan Wibisono.

The jury, in addition to be in charge of providing toilets assessment, also provides socialization of clean toilets to the tourism businesses and local governments on how to create and manage public toilets that are clean according to the standard.

The clean public toilet award is expected to encourage the man-agement of the toilet to constantly maintain and keep clean in order to improve the quality of services, es-pecially sanitation and encourage people to take more care in the use of public toilets. (*)

Clean Public Toilet Award 2014 in Taman Rekreasi Buatan

The following are the general standard of clean toilets: 1. Toilets should be dry. Indonesian climate is humid and fungus spreads easily if the toilet

is wet. In addition to dry, toilet should be clean and healthy as well.2. Toilets must be clean because a dirty toilet can be easily spread disease such as diar-

rhea and vomiting.3. A public toilets should not use a main entrance. The door is just there in the toilet

cubicles. There is no need touch while in the toilet. With no main door, it means that people do not need to hold the door. The same thing should be applied on the flush button and tap of hand washers. It should be used with just a touch (using sensors). Palms have become the main chain of the spread of disease. If fewer and fewer hands touch involved, it is expected that the disease spread is also decreasing.

4. Toilets must have clean water, toilet paper, sanitizer for toilet seat, hand soap, hand dryers, and garbage cans. Public toilets should also have toilets for children and dis-abled.

A total of 815 artists from various regions in Indonesia performed to enliven the 8th

Nusantara Bamboo Festival held on May 15 to 16 in Pringsewu Regency, Lampung Province.

For the first time Pringsewu re-gency hosts the festival. The event organized by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy in collabo-ration with the Government of the Pringsewu regency, featured a vari-ety of products ranging from crafts and culinary, to musical instruments made from bamboo plants.

“This year is the first time Nusan-tara Bamboo Festival held outside Java. Previous activities were held in Jakarta or Bandung,” said Sapta Nirwandar, Deputy Minister of Tour-ism and Creative Economy in the opening of the annual festival.

Heavy rain on the first day of the festival did not decrease the interest of the people to come and enjoy all the activities held. The rain also did not make the spirit of 400 people to play the gamolan (gamelan) fade away.

Gamolan performance that in-volved students from primary school level up to the university students is recorded in Indonesian Record Mu-seum (MURI). The opening of the festival also featured performances of 1000 bamboo cannon that sur-

rounded the center of activity.Nusantara Bamboo Festival is a

festival of art and culture packed with performances featuring music of bamboo as the main program. This time as many as 815 artists from various regions in Indonesia enliven the festival. In addition, this event also presents popular musi-cian from Jakarta, namely Dwiki Darmawan with his the Krakatau band, Ita Purnamasari, Kerispatih, and the young singer Putri Ayu.

Lampung Governor Sjachroedin Zainal Abidin Pagaralam welcomes excitingly the festival held in Pring-sewu regency. Sjachroedin also asks the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy so that the festival could be held every year in Pringsewu re-gency. According to him, Nusantara Bamboo Music performance sup-ports the attempt of Pringsewu local government to make bamboo tree as the icon of the area.

“Since long time ago, Pringsewu has been known as a bamboo for-est. Thus, it is a perfect venue for holding this event, and it can pro-mote the regency tourism as well,” said Sjachroedin.

According to Pringsewu Regent H.Sujadi Saddat, bamboo is a plant that is familiar among the Pringsewu community. This regency, which used to be part of Tanggamus re-

gency, has a history that is attached to this plant.

“The name was derived from the word Pring which means bamboo, and Sewu means a thousand, so Pringsewu means Thousand Bam-boo,” said Sujadi.

Further said Sujadi, the event is expected to motivate people to be able to preserve bamboo and be creative with bamboo, which his-torically has been very close and become part of the Pringsewu com-munity.

Sujadi also said that in the future Pringsewu regency will utilize the bamboo plant to attract tourists. “We will develop the bamboo to become the main attraction of tourism by a bamboo village as a tourism center. We are also going to build a bamboo museum, including the culinary cen-ter of the bamboo. I hope bamboo can improve people’s welfare, “said Sujadi. (Erwin)
