PICTUREHOUSE presents

HamletBy William Shakespeare

In this pared down, modern dress HamletMaxine Peake plays the Prince as a studentidealist repelled by the corruption andcompromise of the adults around him. The result is an intense family drama. Peake isandrogynous as she shouts, rages, whispers, laughs, and stares corpse-eyed and stony faced. Most other cast members cross the genderdivide with Gillian Bevan, as Polonia, balancinggarrulous fool and wise prime minister

Auditorium

The duo of Scottish fiddle star Alasdair Fraserand cello prodigy Natalie Haas prove thattraditional music connects cultures, communities, and generations. He is fromClackmannan, she is a Juilliard graduate fromCalifornia but they sound as though they hadshared roots and had been playing together forcenturies. While his fiddle dances, her cellothrobs darkly or plucks puckishly. Then sheopens her cello's throat, joining Fraser in soaringsustains, windswept refrains, and sudden, jazzyexplosions.
