Principal’s Message

Mission Statement: East Lake High School will develop productive and responsible students who are prepared for post-secondary education, the workforce, and citizenship.

Dear Parents, The year is continuing to fly by and we have reached the time of the school year where we are in the midst of testing assessments. We have just completed FSA testing. End of Course exams (EOCs) are beginning and Advanced Placement (AP) tests will follow shortly. The students then will complete the year by taking their final exams. If your student needs to make up any credits over the summer or if they are interested in any of our other summer bridge programs for reading or math, they may attend classes here at East Lake High School. Now is the time to sign up for summer bridge! You may register your child at www.pcsb.org under student reservation. Parents are responsible for transportation. Plans for next year are in full swing and by now your child has turned in their class requests for next year. As you know, East Lake offers a wide variety of classes including many Advanced Placement classes, Dual Enrollment classes, and many diverse electives. If you haven’t done so already, now is a great time to follow us on Twitter and Facebook. Please don’t forget to periodically check our website for updates and important news. Also, please take a quick moment to check your telephone number and email address in FOCUS. I frequently use email and telephone to communicate with families and share pertinent school information. I am grateful and privileged to be the Principal of East Lake High School and I thank and congratulate everyone for another magnificent year. I am honored to partner with you in providing the best educational experiences possible for your child. On behalf of the entire East Lake High School faculty and staff, I’d like to wish you and your families a fantastic summer.

Sincerely,Carmela Haley, Principal

SAC Meeting Dates 2015-20162nd Tuesday of each month 6:30 pm – Large Conference Room

Attendance Policy When a student has been absent from school, he/she must bring in a note with their full name, date of absence(s), and reason for absence(s) signed by a parent or guardian to Student Services upon their return to receive an excused absence. School Board Policy published in the Code of Student Conduct, which every student received a copy of, states: Work made up after an unexcused absence must be dropped a letter grade in high school. Please be reminded that every teacher will follow this policy without exception. Unexcused reasons such as skipping will not be supported and do have consequences.

Early Dismissal Notes requesting early dismissal for a student must have the following information written clearly on the note: The student’s name, time to be dismissed, reason for the early dismissal and a parent’s daytime phone number. All early dismissal notes (including notes for special event days such as homecoming, prom or the day before a holiday) must be turned into student services prior to the 7:05 am bell, no exceptions. After the school day starts, parents will be required to come into the school and sign their student out, telephone and email requests will not be honored. No student will be allowed to leave an exam prior to the final bell. If a student has exempted their exam, they will need their exemption form to leave school after the final bell of that exam.

Soaring NewsAddress Changes

Planning to move? According to the Code of Student Conduct, if you have moved over the summer or will move during the school year, parents are required to give the school their new address within five days of their move. If the school discovers that you have moved and you have not told them, your child could be considered to be “found out of that school’s attendance area.” This could mean an immediate change of school for your child and your child could be deemed ineligible for athletics and other school activities. Follow these easy steps to update your address and to keep the district informed.

Steps to change your child’s address during the school year:1. Click the Student Reservation System button on the home page,

and log in with your User ID and password.2. Click on Change of Residence Address link and follow the steps.

Proof of Residence requires two of the following items: utility bill for power, water, cable, sewer or land-based telephone (not cellular); rental agreement or lease; closing document; Pinellas County tax statement with homestead exemption. The items must be recent and include the name of the parent/guardian and the service/home address.

Thank You Volunteers Volunteers are a very important part of our success at East Lake High School. Thank you for all that you do to ensure the success of our students. Please log  volunteer hours for this year or email Teresa Peterson [email protected]

PTSA Members The ELHS PTSA will hold its final general meeting for the 2015-2016 school year on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at 6:00 pm in the large conference room. All are welcome to attend.

East Lake HS Cell Phone Policy At East Lake HS, we place great value on your education. We also recognize that electronic devices (including, but not limited to cell phones, MP3 players, portable gaming devices, etc.) can be disruptive to the learning environment. For this reason, we adhere to the following policy for the 2015-2016 school year:1. All devices, including cell phones, blackberries,

pagers, tablet PCs, mobile presenters, wireless tablets, digital recorders, beepers, palms, IPods, MP3 players, texting calculators, camera phones, digital cameras or laptops, are not to be used during class unless the teacher authorizes their usage for class-related purposes. During the testing session cell phones/camera phones are to be turned off and stored in a case, book bag, knapsack, or purse, and may not be placed on the table, desktop, or individual’s lap. In particular, cell phones are to be turned off and are not to be used during class, except where noted below.

2. Cell phones/camera phones are to be turned off and not used during any testing or examination period.

3. Students may use electronic devices before school, after school, during their lunch break and during passing. Students may not use electronic devices during those times of day that have been set aside for instruction.

4. Students must turn off cell phones and electronic devices before they enter the classroom door regardless of whether the tardy bell has rung (they are no longer in passing time if they have made it to the room).

5. If teachers see a student walk into the room with an electronic device on or out, the teacher confiscate the device. If the student refuses to give up the device, it will be considered defiance/insubordination to a staff member and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken.
