KEYNOTE PRESENTATION:

The Happiness Code: The 5 Active Reflections of Really Really Happy Educators! How can we stay positive when life is getting tough? How do we re-energize when life seems to drain us? When the whole world is becom-ing more stressed, can organizations and individuals create a positive attitude change? Dr. Bird has spent nearly 4 decades as a college professor researching and teaching positive psychology and the effects of tension, stress, and change in our culture. He uses research, theory, humor, and reflection to explain and clarify the critical influences on happiness in our lives. He offers strategies and functional skills for dealing with toxic people, attitude change, and stressful situations. In this day and age of hostility and tension, we could all use a little more serenity and Dr. Bird leaves every audience with new essential skills as well as inspiration. The 5 active reflections not only change lives, they often save them as well.

Morning Keynote: 8:40-9:30 a.m. – AuditoriumKevin Honeycutt“ I am a change agent, a keynote speaker/trainer but I am first and foremost a teacher. I have been teaching for over 23 years and I am on a mission to prepare kids for the future and to empower teachers to do the same.”

Kevin grew up in poverty and attended school in many cities across the United States. As he witnessed education around the country he collected powerful experiences that still influence his conversations and his work with educators. He spent 13 years teaching art K-12 in public school and for 17 years spent summers leading creative adventure camps for kids of all ages.

In 1991 he received the Making IT Happen Award which is an internationally recognized awards program for edu-cators and leaders in the field of educational technology integration in K–12 schools. The program identifies and rewards educational technology leaders around the world for their commitment and innovation.

KEYNOTE PRESENTATION:

Suicide Prevention (Room C208) K-12 All ContentsThe Berlin CSD counseling staff developed a suicide prevention protocol in 2015. The protocol includes use of the Columbia Suicide Severity Scale to evaluate the risk of suicide; the steps to take when someone shows warning signs of self-harm or suicide; the referral process for psychiatric care; and ongoing use of the Lifelines Suicide prevention Program to teach students, staff and the surrounding community how to identify and assist people contemplating self-harm or suicide. Information will include brief statistics and behavioral patterns around suicidal thinking and behavior, warning signs, video example, and an overview of a suicide prevention curriculum.

What Does Independent Reading Look Like? (Room S213) K-5 LiteracyIndependent reading is more than simply having students read on their own. It is teaching students to understand what kind of books they might enjoy reading as well as making sure students understand their reading ability without the pressure of “having” to read one specific book. In this session, participants will learn what independent reading is and is not, as well as why it is beneficial. We will explore the work of Donalyn Miller and her book The Book Whisperer and how your library can help.

Come to discuss: How might organizing your curriculum around the four artistic processes of Creating, Responding, Performing/Presenting/Producing and Connecting change your planning and units? What might be new for each arts discipline? How will having P-12 performance indicators, rather than grade band indicators, affect instruction and assessment? How will having a 5th Arts area - Media Arts - affect Music, Dance, Theatre and Visual Arts?

Creating & Using Composite Scoring for AIS Programs (Room N308) K-3 AISWe will introduce the use of composite scoring for correctly identifying students in need of Academic Intervention Services. Composite scoring allows educators to look at the whole student, academically, over the course of a prescribed period. It utilizes the RTl Model in selecting the lowest performing students in Reading and Math and provides educators with a concrete picture of where an entire student population falls in relation to each other. This ensures that the children who really require academic support will receive it. This workshop will provide AIS educators with an objective view of student populations and enable them to provide evidence for classroom teachers, Child Study Teams, and Committee on Special Education to substantiate a child’s need for service.

You will learn how to take a picture, record, and caption, label the work and submit it. We will also experience the Seesaw app as a teacher. You will create a class and make/choose an activity for your class.

The 5 Golden Rules for Staying Connected to Students (Auditorium) K-12 All ContentsStudents often come to school with scars that can’t be seen. Trauma, abuse, and poverty can adversely affect a child’s emotional, physical, and cognitive development. Dr. Bird will look at specific behaviors that allow effective practitioners to deal with the most challenging stu-dents. In an era of human disconnection, one of our greatest challenges is to examine effective strategies for connecting with all students and helping them develop more effective coping skills. Dr. Bird will give strategies for how to calm a student or a classroom, become a guide (not a dictator), create effective discipline systems, and create alliances with parents.
