Mission Statement: To provide programs and

services that will help seniors

maintain and enhance their quality of life.

Proud Member of

“Doesn’t the place look great!’” Members of our Decorating Committee hit the décor out of the ballpark when they made the Gym and Cafeteria look fantastically patriotic for our Canada 150 Celebration. We are going to leave the decorations up for all to enjoy as this birthday bash is so big we might as well celebrate well into the fall.

Kim’s Korner Here we are Summer! And Happy 150th Canada! As I write this I am preparing for my summer vacation, and will sadly miss the SEESA 150 Canada celebration. I am confident this will have been a wonderful day. Thanks to the Canada 150 committee for working on this very special celebration. Also thanks to the kitchen staff and volunteers for rolling with all the special menu requests! Years ago summer programs at SEESA did not exist! I am so happy to see that summer fitness programs and clubs are now choosing to meet all year through. Summer for the office staff is busy with program planning and grant applications. The Board will be working on strategic planning and Board development. The Holyrood Bench Project has now wrapped up with the last bench going out June 15. Again thanks to the very talented “Bench Crew”. The demand for benches continues as we are selling them for $100. This project has inspired other communities to sponsor their own bench project (YAY!) we may just be back in the bench business next year! Congratulations to all! On June 3 the Holyrood Community celebrated the annual Holyrood Hosedown. SEESA donated freezies for the kids to enjoy during the event. Have you seen the “Book of Fabulous?” This is a little white binder located at the front desk. When something wonderful happens or someone goes the extra mile for you please show your appreciation by writing a little note in this book. LET’S CELEBRATE!

Have a wonderful summer!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!

After several years of waiting our roof is finally going to be replaced. This process will begin soon and take an estimated 3 months. During this time there will be construction vehicles parked in the west parking lot. There will also be a fair bit of construction noise.

If you are sensitive to the smell of

solvents you may wish to attend SEESA

with caution.

PROGRAMMING NEWS Welcome to Summer Programming at SEESA! Although summer time is a great time to be in your

yard working in your flower or vegetable garden, or to just be outside enjoying the different

events and happenings that take place in Edmonton in the summer, I want to remind you that

we have summer clubs and classes happening at SEESA. We are not on a full schedule;

however, there is something offered for everyone at different levels.

A majority of our clubs are still running and we’ve brought some back for the summer such as

Bocce Ball which runs every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon depending on the weather. If it’s

not raining they play! Fitness, card games, art, and music clubs are all in full swing this summer.

We are very fortunate to be able to offer a variety of classes in July and early August as well. Our

new instrumental classes include Learn to Chord and Ukulele Group Lessons. Many of our

physical fitness instructors are offering classes. New to our programming is a Qigong class. Keep

active and fit by attending your favorite exercise class or by trying something different.

Brought back to this summer’s programming is the opportunity to drop in for classes. As I learn

about drop in I see how it impacts the different areas of programming. Our policy states that if

there are less than four people in a class it will be cancelled. With drop in, a situation is created

where people don’t have to register so we never really know if we need to cancel a class or not.

That’s just one of the challenges of offering this program. Regardless, we’ve offered it for the

summer so here’s how it will work. Members come prior to the class and pay the drop in fee at

the front desk. They show their receipt to the instructor and the instructor writes down the

receipt number. Please ensure you follow this procedure and pay for your drop in before

attending class.

With all of this in mind now would be a perfect time to try out something new. Check out our

Summer Program Guide available at the centre or online for all that we are offering.

Have a Safe & Active Summer Everyone!

June’s Brain Buster Answers: What is unusual about the following words:

revive, banana, grammar, voodoo, assess, potato, dresser, uneven?

If you move the first letter of the word to the end the word is spelled the same in

reverse.

We had 7 entries with correct responses and five statements that were true in of them-selves but not the answer we were looking for this month.

July/August Brain Buster: Which flag belongs to what province or

territory in Canada?

Place your answer on a piece of paper with your name and phone number on it and

submit it to the Front Desk by August 17th. A draw will be made from all correct

entries. You may win yourself a breakfast at SEESA for your efforts.

Outreach News

We are celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday this year. As Canadians we easily celebrate “birth”. After birth is various life stages ending in death - a subject we typically do not want to talk about. Coping with the death of a loved one is difficult and sometimes the grieving are caught unaware of the things that need to be done. There are many details that need to be managed. The following checklist covers the basics and hopefully will help smooth the way:

Following a Death Obtain a death certificate. You will need 12 or more copies. They are less expensive if

requested at the time of death than later. Learn how to order a death certificate from the province, territory or country where the death took place.

Contact the funeral home. The funeral director will register the death, based on information from the family and the medical certificate.

Cancel pensions and benefits, i.e. Canada Pension, Old Age Security, company pensions, Employment Insurance, Workers Compensation benefits.

Cancel personal identification, i.e. driver’s license, personal health card, social insurance card, professional memberships.

Enquire about benefits you may be eligible to receive, such as survivor’s pension, death benefit, child benefit or allowance for the survivor. There is also a federal income support for parents of murdered or missing children.

Obtain a copy of the will and provide to the executor.

Within a few days after death: Arrange for a funeral and burial or cremation. Search the person’s documents to find

out whether there was a prepaid burial plan. Ask a friend or family member to go with you to the mortuary. Prepare an obituary. Contact the religious organization or the funeral home to arrange a funeral service or memorial, prayer service, visitations.

If the person was in the military or belonged to a fraternal or religious group, contact that organization. It may have burial benefits or conduct funeral services.

Ask a friend or relative to keep an eye on the person’s home, answer the phone, collect mail, throw out food and water plants, mow the lawn, etc.
