Pyramid Hill Historical Society President’s Report - 10-06-2014
Another year has passed and I am sure that our members are pleased that we were able to continue the good work as we have been doing for many years. Every week there is someone calling to research their family history, either by appointment or just arriving on spec. With our system of cataloguing and archival records we can always oblige. The visits of students and teachers to the museum are always welcome. They are very interested in what Pyramid Hill Was, and is, and yet to be. The two large expenses this year were necessary. The Compactus for the workroom has proved worthy and a great addition for shelving and storage, and the new air conditioner just had to be for the comfort of the workers. A termite inspection will be needed this year. Bus tours are a welcome addition to our income. Our two major events for the year must rate a mention. The presentation of the book ‘Mt Pyramid’ was a success and very ably supported with interviews with three older residents, Wanda Atkins, John Carroll & Ian Bartels, drawing from their memories of a life time at Pyramid Hill. The recent launching of our WW1 book, ‘Remember Respect Rejoice’ has received support way beyond our expectations as over 200 people came from far and wide to be present. Those who spent years researching & putting the book together are to be congratulated. The programme & presentation received many accolades and has put our Historical Society on the district map again. We welcome Raeleen Fletcher to our society and the office of treasurer. I still hope to plan for a new frontage across the building to give more room and a modern appearance. Thank you all for your support this year, may you continue your good work.

More District History
Part 19—By Ern Ferris
A tramp overtaken by the flood took refuge in Lacey’s abandoned mud brick house on the Mologa road. As the water got higher he got on the table, but as the walls began to fall he got outside and in water up to his chin. Fortunately a friendly spar floated towards him and buoyed him to the railway line and he safely reached the town. A disturbing agent of the flood was lavish in some parts. In the Bridge-water district it carried two casks of ale and a case of whisky to a farmer’s residence down stream. A piano, gigs and other light vehicles were observed making their way to uncertain destinations. It is related how a hare endeavouring to escape from the flood swam two swift currents, stopping on higher ground to gather strength, was nearing some lignum country, but becoming exhausted, was set upon by a flock of crows and picked to death. A chest of drawers which contained white shirts, collars and other spotless linen was one of the articles washed out of Summer ‘store and residence at Newbridge, and after floating about for several hours it was found that the contents had not been in the least soiled Kow Swamp. The overflow from this caused the flooding of the undermen-tioned farmers:-Messers S Hawken, Hore, Hardie, Mansfield, Craddock and Goulding. An immense body of water came down the Bullock Creek on Sunday morning several miles wide, spreading over the Mincha East plain. The people who had not much time, made off to Mount Hope, some having to kill their calves as there was no time to get them away. The residence of Mr S Hawken was saved after great effort and was the only one tenanted for miles around, the occupants of all others having made for Mount Hope. Invaluable assistance was given by Messers A D Randall and P Hawken At Mologa. Those who afforded shelter and succour to those who were flooded out were Mrs Sherlock, Messers Basset, Price, Hardiman, Church, Hare, Sherlock and Squire. A public meeting is called at Mologa to consider the question of relief to sufferers of the flood.
Calivil. The state of the weather lately justifies the conclusion that the Shackle-ton exploration party must have been tampering with the reservoir, where the Antarctic disturbances are stored, and finding it impossible to repair the damage, a hasty departure was made for other regions. For one storm follows on the heels of another with unceasing regularity, and Scriptural record of incessant rain for 40 days and 40 nights bids fair to be equalled. If the present climatic conditions continue a relief party will have to be dispatched post haste to the seat of the Antarctic disturbance to effect repairs and regulate the normal flow. In the event of inability to restore normal conditions, one wonders what duration of time will elapse before the supply of storms diminishes. The flood waters have n ow subsided, or at least are confined to natural watercourses instead of rushing turbulently over the country almost disregarding the law of gravitation, as appeared to be the case lastb week. If a person could have circled over the district in an airship, a panoramic view of the vast waste of waters would have been presented. In the centre of this mighty torrent was an island about two miles in width, and perhaps 15 miles in length. This precious stone set in a silver sea was the highland running through the middle of the districts of Pompapiel and Calivil, and is the route followed by the Calivil water channel. To the south of the confluent waters of Bullock Creek and the Loddon were divided by this strip of high country. On the east Bullock Creek continued its course as a mighty rushing stream, stretching as far as the eye could reach. While on the west side of the Calivil creek was similarly swollen. its waters and those of the Serpentine and Loddon intermingling and forming an interminable aquatic expanse. To the north the Calivil and Bullock creeks joined forces and flowed on to join the brimming river. An aeronaut would also have seen houses partly submerged and thousands of sheep perishing. This Saturday is the PHFNC 2nd annual Woolshed Party which is being held at Frank & Sheridan Gunther’s (124 Martin’s Road, Pyramid Hill – directions at the bottom). There will be a spit roast for dinner ($20 per family or $12 per adult). A bon fire and entertainment for all ages provided, a special thanks to DJ Walder for providing the music. Our very own ‘Delta Goodrem’ aka Nathan Fitzpat-rick has promised a minimum of two solo’s – one of course being his signature song “The Gambler”. We are once again on search for Pyramid Hill’s fastest shearer. Moona is keen to keep his reigning title, but after a week in Bali and less than ideal preparation he might not be able to keep up with the likes of local young guns Adam Twigg and Brad Peters. Contestants selected in the beginners section have been kept under wraps, however, we can reveal that one willing competitor is out to show her husband that you can still look beautiful with a sheep between your legs and asserts that her high heels will not slow her down.
Directions for Woolshed Party – head out the Bendigo-Pyramid Road approximately 9km, take a right at Leeds road then 2km later take a right onto Central Mologa Road (100m) then take the first left back on to Martin’s road and continue along the for a kilometre before arriving at the venue on your right. The following week after we play YCW (21st June) we encourage everybody to head back to the Bridge for a delicious meal (be sure to thank them for the support of our Trivia Night!). Then after, is our Army Pub Crawl. Get in touch with Trent Barri or Georgia Bartels for details.

Netball Report - 07/6/14
Newbridge v Pyramid Hill
A Grade
Pyramid Hill had a strong start in the game, coming out hard from the first whistle. Shooters Zoe Kennedy and Chelsea Mann worked the ball around well. Debut WA Em Streader fed and led very well down the court compli-mented by the ever reliable Gab. It was a hard day for the defenders as the Newbridge attack was very well experienced. Kirby and Sonia worked hard in the ring whilst Emily Cunning put a lot of pressure on in WD. The game got away from us in the last quarter and Newbridge walked away with the win. Final Score Newbridge 43- Pyramid Hill 35 Award Chelsea Mann
B Grade
The B grade game started evenly,
however poor passing by us allowed
Newbridge to have a few more goaling
opportunities.
Lauren Moon threw herself around the goal ring, getting many touches and Georgia and Court found the rings sweet spot on most attempts. We were 5 down at quarter time. A second quarter saw Pyramid reduce the deficit to 4. Lauren F and Chelsea made good leads through the centre but we were 6 down at half time. Despite some great intercepts from Hayley, Newbridge continued to sneak a few extra goals in the second half to win by 13. Final Score Newbridge 45-Pyramid 32 Award Hayley Hipwell
C Grade
The first quarter was evenly matched with the Pyramid Hill girls putting up a good fight. The second quarter positions were mixed up to try something new. The final 2 quarters saw the Pyramid girls getting a bit tired with Newbridge stepping up and taking a good lead.
Final Score Newbridge 61- Pyramid 22
Award Cass James
17 and Under
It was a steady first quarter from the girls getting off to a nice lead. In the second quarter, there were a few position changes but the girls continued to hold their lead with good shooting and defence work. The girls started to get a bit tired in the third quarter with Newbridge really stepping up and putting the pressure on. The girls gained their composure in the 4th quarter coming away with another great win. Final Score Pyramid 52- Newbridge 32 Award- Olivia Webb/ Coldrock award- Megan Gunther
15 and Under
On a rather chilly day, the Pyramid girls took to the court thinking positive. Some sloppy passes and a much taller and fitter team had us down at the first quarter break. The game continued much the same until the 3rd quarter where we passed in front and shot accurately. Overall good came girls. Bring on Ingle-wood! Final Score Newbridge 60-Pyramid 29 Award-Amy Murfitt
Minis
It was a good steady first quarter for the young girls with most of the girls having a go in the new positions. The majority of the play was down the Pyramid girls end in the 2nd quarter with our young defenders looking a little cool in the breeze. A few more changes were made in the third bringing some of the defenders down to have a go at throwing a goal or two. It was a great match all round by our girls. It looked like everyone had fun trying out their positions.

Pyramid Hill
Football Club Newbridge vs Pyramid Hill
The trip down to Newbridge didn’t quite go to plan with only the U 17’s providing any joy for the day. The young pups continued on their merry way dominating from the outset. S Gunther looked every bit a CHF displaying great mobility and providing the link from defence to attack while Fitzy once again kicked a bag full. Some great centre clearance work was led by D Moon in the ruck with N Kerr and H Miller working well at ground level. The reserves faced a similar story to the previous week being short on for numbers. With President Wes pulling on the boots to play alongside son Justin a clear example of the age difference in the team. The boys endeavour never dropped off but weight of numbers and injuries throughout the game eventually took its toll. Final Scores Pyramid Hill 5.5 -35 lost to Newbridge 17.15 -117 Goal kickers- M Scott 3, J Amos 1, J Horsburgh 1 Best Players- Bridge Hotel J Amos Victoria Hotel D Mann The senior game saw the promotion of Bevan Gunther from the U 17’s for his first taste of senior footy. Congratula-tions Bevan In an even first half where both sides failed to make the most of their opportunities we went in 3 points in
arrears.
In the 3rd Q we went to sleep, back into our shell, went somewhere the ball was continually pumped into the Newbridge forwards, so much so that Utility T Barri who had a role at fullback on the league’s leading goalkicker, eventually blew a hamstring. 16 scoring shots to 2 for the term told the tale of a complete domination by the Newbridge midfield, inaccurate kicking the only reason we still had a glimmer of hope starting the last Q 37 points in arrears.
A 6 goal final term too little to late in a disappointing display of desire and application to win the contested footy. Final Scores Pyramid Hill 11.12 -78 lost to Newbridge 14.15 - 99 Millers AG Supplies Goals were G James 2, P Grayling 2, L Bartels 2, T Parker 2, J Forest 1, J Wishart 1, B Morrison 1 Bridge Hotel L Bartels Victoria Hotel L Davies Other good players were B Singh, B Gunther and M Dingwall. 3 young local lads in the top 5 players, well done boys.
