New AttractionsThe Ejection Bungee’s quick release catapultsthe rider 45 feet in the air while harnessedaround the waist. A double pulley systemusing bungee ropes sends the individual up -but what goes up, must come down, with afew bounces in between. The corner of Waterand William Streets is the place to be.

Over on State Street is an aerial view that willtake the rider literally “over” State Street.From a 28 foot tower, harnessed in, a ziplinedrops and zooms the rider 130 feet, or about acity block.

Shlebyville’s Darrell Best, a Guinness bookworld record holder for the World’s FastestWedding Chapel on Wheels, will beconducting a ceremony between AshleyLaVela and Jonathan Earnest . At the chapel,built by the show, “Trick My Truck,” thecouple will be wed at 11 a.m. Saturday, afterriding in the Razzle Dazzle GoodtimesParade.

Film FestivalThe Land of Lincoln Credit Union 21 filmproject Film Festival, which displays localfilm makers’ creations, has its awardsceremony Friday at the Decatur Civic Center.Red carpet starts at 6 p.m. and awards will beat 7 p.m.

From noon-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, films

will be shown in a tent on North and Waterstreets.

VolunteeringFor 26 years volunteers of the DecaturCelebration gave of their own time and thenhad to pay for their own shirt. Not any more.

Volunteers do everything from the recyclinggreen team, stage hands, working a game atthe kid’s block to managing the parade.

“Caterpillar is sponsoring volunteerhospitality to show the Decatur Celebrationvolunteers how much we appreciate over 500people giving time,” Celebrationproducer/director Lori Sturgill said. “This isthe first year the volunteers received a freeshirt.”

But that is not where the appreciation ends.

“Caterpillar stepped up, having volunteerhospitality in the transfer house, a cooling offstation for the volunteers,” Sturgill said.“They work so hard and it’s hot. They can getcomplimentary water or soda and a snack.

“I think it says a lot about the fabric of ourcommunity. They are committed to thecommunity and Celebration.”

Wine GardenThe Decatur Celebration Committee hasfound nooks and crannies for some quieterevents such as the corner of Merchant andPrairie Streets, where a wine connoisseur maysample wines from four premier Illinoiswineries. The shaded parcel is an upscale

refuge from the bustle of the festival.Comfortable seating gives festival goers theopportunity to take a load off and to buysmall samples, glasses and bottles of wine.Centerpieces for the tables have been createdby Jody Cox of “An Affair to Remember.”

There is no admission cost to the wine tastingarea. A ticket is required for sampling.

A More Green CelebrationKeeping the Decatur Celebration groundsclean and green takes a lot of thought andvolunteers.

“You don’t deal with disposables willingly,”producer/director Lori Sturgill said, “unlessyou are passionate about the idea of beinggreen through recycling.”

In its second year, the crew is a biggervolunteer force keeping the grounds clean andencouraging recycling.

Last year, “we were 40 strong, all weekendlong,” said Sturgill, who added in addition tolast year’s recycling volunteers, others arepicking up the banner and spreading theirpassion to encourage the social awareness ofrecycling and to avoid the waste that wouldgo to a landfill. Thanks to the Macon CountyEnvironmental Management, the ClearStreamcontainers hold recyclables such as paper cupsand plastic bottles.

The ClearStream containers which made theirappearance in 2011 vendors will havecardboard collection boxes behind each oftheir stalls.

These receptacles are in addition to thehundreds of trash cans spread throughout thegrounds.

Community Art ProjectThe Decatur Area Arts Council hosts an artproject for all ages. From 11 a.m.-5 p.m.Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday, familiesand others will have the opportunity to createcards using a watercolor crayon-resisttechnique and printmaking from Styrofoamblocks. Both activities will be available at nocharge.

2012 Celebration to playhost to third wedding infestival historyDecatur, IL- The DecaturCelebration has been the venue ofchoice for a couple of weddings inits history, but never for one onwheels. On Saturday, August 4th,2012, Ashley LaVela, an EventAssistant at Decatur Celebration,Inc., and her fiancé JonathanEarnest will be joined in holymatrimony by Reverend DarrellBest aboard the mobile weddingchapel “Best Man.” The ceremonywill take place immediatelyfollowing a memorable cruisethrough the Razzle DazzleGoodtimes Parade where thecouple will serve as Parade Co-Grand Marshals.

The bride-to-be and her luckygroom both grew up in Oak Lawn,Illinois. It was not until Ashley’sfreshman year at the University ofIllinois-Champaign/Urbana thatthe two started dating. “We hadmutual friends in high school andwe were even in band together,but we never talked,” said Ashley.After three years together, Jonpopped the question under theEternal Flame monument on theUniversity of Illinois’ campus. Themonument holds an urban legendthat says “if you kiss yoursweetheart while seated here, youwill stay together forever, ormarry.” Among the crowds andhustle bustle of the DecaturCelebration, the happy couple willmake that legend a reality in thecompany of their closest friendsand family.

Why a Celebration Wedding?Ashley explains their adventurous,“why not” decision: “Jon hasalways said that I’munpredictable. The last time hetold me I wouldn’t do something Iended up jumping out of anairplane (skydiving). So I thinkhe’s always on his toes now, ready

to embark on some new adventurewith me. Getting married in afamous mobile wedding chapel isnot an opportunity that comesalong every day!”

Following the LaVela/Earnestvows, the couple and their familieswill have an intimate and slightlymore traditional Receptiontogether at Paco’s Sol Bistro. AfterCelebration weekend, the couplewill continue to live happily everafter in Springfield, Illinois bothseeking Master’s Degrees fromUniversity of Illinois-Springfield.

The “Best Man” and ReverendBest will remain on Celebrationgrounds on Saturday afternoon forphoto opportunities as well as on-the-spot vow renewals or otherweddings. Renewals andWeddings at the Celebration willbe offered for a special fee of $100.Couples interested in beingmarried at the Celebration willneed to apply for and obtain aMacon County Marriage Licenseprior to the weekend.
