Consistency

• To help maintain our global brand the BBC has increased it’s use of consistency in both visual and interaction design:

• A global design grid across all websites.

• A global media player - listen or watch using one set of controls.

• A consistent global navigation

• The design patterns library - We hope, in the future, to share our patterns with everyone.

Ok, what’s this got to do with ‘Widgets’?

• A ‘widget’ is a single-purpose web application that can be taken away from its parent website and embedded on a third party site.

• Single-purpose means they allow a user to achieve one goal.

• Today, widgets are ubiquitous they appear on a computer desktop, a mobile phone and even on games consoles and modern TV’s

You could say our homepage is ‘Widgetised’

• Each box on the homepage allows a user to quickly achieve a certain goal.

• Eg.– Catch up with news headlines.– Check the radio listings.– Check the weather.– Check the BBC iPlayer.

• With true widgets we can go further, we give people ways to consume our content that mean they don’t have to come to the BBC homepage (or anywhere else on our sight)

• Installing a widget means the content goes to them.

Some of our early widgets may lack consistency…

• BBC iPlayer TV and Radio

• BBC iPlayer Radio

• Football News and Gossip

• 5Live Football Player

• World on the Move – Natural History

• But as students responding to this brief, you can help us design and create better and more…
