Iowa Cubs Game NotesTriple-A Affiliate of the Chicago Cubs since 1981

TONIGHT’S GAME: The Iowa Cubs and Tucson Padres play the first game of a four-game series. The Padres are the Pacific Coast League affiliate of the San Diego Padres. This is the first game of a 13-game home stand over 12 days for the Cubs. The team will host the Las Vegas 51s for four games starting on Monday and the Oklahoma City RedHawks for five games starting on May 24, including a double-header on Sunday, May 26.

CUBS SPLIT WITH ACES: The Cubs lost 11-1 on Tueday afternoon in Reno and split the four-game series at Aces Ballpark. RH Barret Loux (2-2) allowed seven runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings for the loss. The Cubs have won his previous four outings. Tyler Kuhn and Tuffy Gosewisch had four hits apiece to lead the Aces’ 19-hit attack. RH Chase Anderson (3-4) limited the Cubs to one run in seven innings to earn the win.

LONG AND WINDING ROAD: The Cubs finished 3-5 on their road trip to Colorado Springs and Reno and lead the league in road losses at 7-17. Entering play today, only Nashville (2-12) has fewer road victories. The Cubs have won just one of their last 16 road series, taking three of four at Tucson, August 14-17 last year.

RETURN OF THE MATT: RH Matt Garza returns to the Cubs today to make his second Major League rehab start for Iowa and fourth overall. Garza started for the I-Cubs in their last home game on May 6 vs. Oklahoma City and allowed one run on four hits in 3.1 innings, walked none, and struck out three. The Cubs won the game 6-1. Garza has made two rehab starts with double-A Tennessee, May 1 and 11. In his last outing, he pitched 3.1 shutout innings, allowed three hits, two walks, and struck out two against Birmingham. Garza has been on Chicago’s disabled list all season with a strained left lat. He suffered the injury in spring training while returning from a stress reaction in his right elbow that ended his season last July. Garza is a former first round pick (25th overall) of the Minnesota Twins out of Fresno State University in 2005. He was traded to Tampa Bay and was the ALCS MVP for the Rays in 2008 and threw the franchise’s first no-hitter against Detroit in 2010. The Cubs acquired him in an eight-player trade in 2011. LH Brooks Raley will piggy-back with Garza today to stay on his normal day in Iowa’s starting rotation. (See page 2 of the game notes for more on Raley).

VS. PADRES: This is the only series scheduled between these two teams this season. Last year, the Cubs won three of four at Tucson, August 14-17. The Cubs also won three of four the last time the Padres visited Principal Park, May 19-22, 2011. The Cubs lead the all-time series 6-2 since the Padres moved to Tucson from Portland. The Tucson Sidewinders were an Arizona Diamondbacks affiliate from 1998-2008. The Cubs won the all-time series 32-26 over the Sidewinders, including a 20-11 mark at Principal Park.

DONNIE BASEBALL: SS Donnie Murphy was 1-for-3 with a walk on Tuesday afternoon in Reno. Murphy has hit safely in a season-high five straight games, going 6-for-17 (.353) with two doubles, a homer, three RBI, and three runs scored.

OH, NELLY: 1B Brad Nelson was 2-for-4 with a double and drove in the Cubs’ only run on Tuesday, extending his season-high hitting streak to five straight games. Over his last 11 games, Nelson is batting .463 (19-for-41) with six doubles, two homers, 11 runs scored, and 11 RBI. He has raised his batting average from .183 to .286 during this stretch. Nelson leads the team with 25 RBI on the year.

BOS-”CAN” HIT: In his last six games, C J.C. Boscan is batting .381 (8-for-21) with a double, two RBI, and three runs scored. Boscan has hit safely in 17 of 21 games for the season and is hitting .333 (24-for-72) on the year. Boscan entered this season with a career .222 batting average in 1,107 minor league games.

DOUBLE DIGIT DOLDRUMS: After allowing 11 runs in Reno on Tuesdsay, the Cubs have given up 10 or more runs nine times this year. The Cubs allowed 10+runs 18 times all of last season and 23 times in 2011 after just 12 in 2010.

TURN TWO: The Cubs tied a franchise record with five double plays on Monday night in Reno. The team has reached that mark six times in franchise history. The last was July 20, 2004 at Nashville. The Cubs (25) and the Padres (29) have turned the fewest double plays in the league this year. Memphis is tied with Tucson at 29.

MAYSONET ACTIVATED: IF Edwin Maysonet has been activated from the disabled list today. He has been out since May 9 with a sprained right ankle. Maysonet has hit safely in each of his last five starts.

TONIGHT’S PIGGY-BACK PITCHER#19 Brooks Raley (3-3, 5.30)

LH Brooks Raley will follow Matt Garza’s rehab appearance and pitch on his regular day to start. Raley’s last start was on Friday, May 10 in Colorado Springs. He allowed a season-high eight runs on 11 hits, walked three, and struck out four in four innings. He was the losing pitcher in the Cubs’ 11-1 defeat against the Sky Sox. The Cubs are 3-4 when Raley starts this season.

STREAKING: With a no-decision on May 5 vs. Oklahoma City, Raley snapped a career-best streak of a win in three straight starts. With a loss in his last outing, he missed the chance to tie his career-high of four staight winning decisions (over eight starts) from July 21-August 29, 2010 with high-A Daytona. Earlier this season, Raley posted a streak of 15.1 consecutive scoreless innings over three starts from April 11-22. It is the longest scoreless streak for any Cubs’ pitcher this season and the longest scoreless streak of Raley’s career.

MOVIN’ ON UP: Raley began the 2012 season at double-A Tennessee, before joining Iowa on May 23. In July, he was named the Chicago Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Month. Despite an 0-4 record, he posted a 2.12 ERA (7ER/29.2IP) over five starts and tied a season-high with eight strikeouts in back-to-back starts on July 23 at Albuquerque and July 28 at New Orleans. He was called up to Chicago on August 7 to make his major league debut and earned his first major league win on August 18 vs. Cincinnati. Raley didn’t pitch after August 30 due to reaching his innings limit for the year.

DIALED IN: In eight starts from June 20-July 8 last season, Raley posted a 1.66 ERA (9ER/48.2IP), which was second in the PCL in that stretch behind Dan Strailey (1.36) of Sacramento. For the month of June, he was 3-2 with a 3.72 ERA in six starts. He was one of several pitchers tied for ninth in the league with three victories and also tied for fifth in the league with 30 strikeouts in 29.2 innings. He also recorded his first career complete game and shutout in a 1-0 win over Nashville in game one of a double-header at Principal Park on June 9.

AGGIE ACE: The Cubs drafted Raley in the sixth round of the 2009 draft out of Texas A&M University. Raley was a standout on the mound and in the outfield for the Aggies. As a sophomore in ‘09, he was 7-3 with a 3.76 ERA as the team’s Friday night starter and hit .304 with a homer and 26 RBI in 58 games in the outfield. Raley was eligible for the draft as a sophomore because he turned 21 the June after his sophomore season.

ALL IN THE FAMILY: Raley has an older brother Russell who pitched at Oklahoma from 2003-06 and played a season and a half in the New York Yankees system, reaching double-A Trenton in 2007. He is now a coach at Texas Tech University. Brooks also has a younger brother, Cory, who was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 33rd round of last year’s draft, but didn’t sign and is playing for Texas A&M.

vs. TUCSON: Tonight is Raley’s first career appearance against the Padres.
