CONSERVATION: A VISIT TO BLICKLING HALL and THE TEXTILE CONSERVATION STUDIO Tuesday 27 September 2011 We have visited many historic houses over the years and I thought it would be interesting to go behind the scenes to look at conservation at a local National Trust property, Blickling Hall, and then on to learn about the work carried out at the NT Textile Conservation Studio nearby in Oulton Street.
The Regional Conservator for the National Trust East of England, Christopher Calnan, has agreed to give us an in-depth tour of conservation at Blickling, including a tour of the attic storage facilities. There will be time for lunch, either at Blickling or a nearby hostelry, before visiting The Textile Conservation Studio where we shall learn about the range of activities undertaken by their team of conservators: display, storage, care, preventive conservation and emergency treatment of a wide variety of historic textiles: tapestries, carpets, curtains, embroideries, costumes and many more.
Programme 1045 Meet in the main visitors’ car park at Blickling Hall 1100 Conservation/storage tours in the Hall (we shall split into 2 groups for this) 1230 approx Free time for lunch 1420 Meet at The Textile Conservation Studio for guided tour 1530 approx End of visit NB This is a self-drive visit so please try to arrange your own lift if you are unable to drive - I will endeavour to help if you are having problems. Oulton is about 2½ miles from Blickling and parking is available at the studio. A map showing the route is on the reverse. Cost £12 for NT members or £20.75 for non-members (please bring NT membership cards), inclusive of guided tours at Blickling Hall and The Textile Conservation Studio.
