As we progress into this new century I stronglysuspect that the control of water will be byelectronic solenoids like our dishwashers andwashing machines. Taps will disappear and we willbe left holding remote controls or proddingsteamy screens.Taps therefore as we know them today may haveexisted for only around a century and areperhaps destined like the horse and carriage todisappear into the mists of nostalgia.I have therefore taken on the task of researchingthis century of taps and selecting the greatclassics from each decade. From their domesticorigins in the late Victorian era through themechanical angularity of the Edwardians, thecurvaceous turn of the century French, thecolonial twenties, the Deco thirties, the streamlinefifties, the starry sixties to the nineteen seventieswhen it all seemed to begin again.Each decade has been carefully considered andresearched. I have visited many museums,countless salvage yards and been unexpectedlywelcomed into castles, cottages and dealers’ dens.It has mostly been a journey of joy. One developsa passion for the chase, unearthing sometimes atgreat length at other times in an unexpectedinstant these forgotten art forms of history.But what does a true classic mean and how doesa design become a classic. Foremost it stands thetest of time, it is popular, a design which sold wellin its day and continued to be demanded and ofcourse it worked, it functioned, it did its job.Beautiful products, beautifully made, beautifullypractical and still beautiful today.All the taps I chose were still in working order,maybe in need of some grease or new washersbut functioning even after in some cases a 100years. These are art forms – sculptures not onlyfor the eye but also for the hand – they lookright and feel right.This is of necessity a work in progress, first andforemost, because as you will see it did not stopwith taps. Today we don’t buy baths we buybathrooms so ceramic chinaware, accessories,lighting, baths and showers had to be added tocomplete each period. There are still gaps in someranges and new decades will be added asproduction allows.In the meantime I offer the results of my labourstodate – ‘A century of classics’ – the story ofa hundred years of bathrooms. You are currentlyholding ‘1900 Classic’ – which is one in a seriesof eight brochures.I sincerely hope some of the pleasure I receivedfrom discovering and developing these productsis transferred as you use these fabulous classics ofthe last century.
