Gethsemane Olive Tree

The name Gethsemane (gatshemanim) means "oil press" and suggests that the garden was a grove of olive trees with an oil press.

Olive Press during Bible times

• Olive press from Capernaum The press consisted of two stones. Into the upper stone a long pole was placed to pull the stone around. The weight of the upper stone gradually would squeeze out the Olive Oil..

Lessons learned from Peter

• No one is beyond the reach of sin! I Cor 10:12

• The devil aims high!

• Even when we deny the Lord, even willfully, Jesus is for us – can use us!!

• Peter had too much faith in himself, not God!

Page 10: City of Jerusalem. An Upper Room in Jerusalem City of Jerusalem

“Sell cloak and buy a sword.”• Physical offense?• Two swords was enough!

– Self-defense, hunting??• Spiritual kingdom! 2 Cor 10:3-5• 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war

according to the flesh, 4 for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. 5 We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,

“Pray that ye might not enter into temptation!”

Page 14: City of Jerusalem. An Upper Room in Jerusalem City of Jerusalem

Pray let ye enter into temptation!• Faced his troubles, acknowledged them in prayer –

asked for help, not escape!!• An angel comes to his rescue!

– Spiritual battle! Eph 6:10-13– Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 11

Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.

– The armor of a prayer warrior!! – Available to us! Give us strength choose way of escape,

not back down when things are difficult!

legion a piece if ask, and God’s will!! – “Inner cup of mental anquish”– “Sweating drops as it were blood.”– Others suffered, never like this…separated from

father, undeserved! Choose to die for very ones nail his hands and feet!

• (Whom do you seek? I am He?)

Page 16: City of Jerusalem. An Upper Room in Jerusalem City of Jerusalem

Jesus: “With you all things are possible”

• NOTICE: IT was not his being God that sustained Him but his confidence in God.

• We have the same access to God and power to resist temptation that Jesus did!

• Hematisdrosis—tiny capillaries in the sweat glands can break mixing blood with sweat.

The Winepress

• Rev 14:18-20• 18 Then another angel, the one who has power over fire,

came out from the altar; and he called with a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, " Put in your sharp sickle and gather the clusters from the vine of the earth, because her grapes are ripe." 19 So the angel swung his sickle to the earth and gathered the clusters from the vine of the earth, and threw them into the great wine press of the wrath of God. 20 And the wine press was trodden outside the city, and blood came out from the wine press, up to the horses' bridles

Isa 63:3; Rev 14:20 different picture

• Gethsemene—Jesus sweats—drops of blood alone, as the innocent sufferer.

• The wine press figure – pictures God as the inflictor, not sufferer of vengeance.

• God will avenge His son’s blood, and the blood of his people whose blood was shed (martyrs) by crushing them in the winepress of his wrath.

• In the end… Jesus is coming back in the clouds to gather the elect from the four corners of the earth and dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, II Thess 1:8-9
