ISSUE 7 AUGUST 2008 VOLUME 8

From the desk of the Pastor Paul From the Pastor:

This year Confirmation Camp was held July 6 – July 11 at Camp Chrysalis where twelve students pictured above participated in the activities. The Bible Study that was presented to the students during the week was entitled “Saints and Superheroes” which I would like to outline for you to use sometime during August as a part of your personal devotions. The series consisted of six lessons.

Day One Called and Created Genesis 1:26-31 (The creation of man. We are created in God’s image and loved by God.)

Focus Points • Understand the difference between a superhero and a saint • Recognize that campers were created as loved saints of God.

Day Two Superpowers Romans 12:3-8 (Spiritual gifts. God has made us all different, special, and unique.) Additional Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12-31; Judges 13:2-5

Focus Points • Campers will realize their gifts • Understand how to use their gifts of God’s glory

Day Three Alter Ego Ephesians 4:17-5:1 (Be imitators of God. Do not hide behind a false appearance but be bold in Christ Jesus.) Additional Scripture: Romans 12:2-8; Matthew 5:14-16

Focus Points • Realize how to be a Christian in a secular world. • Recognize the disguises we wear as Christians • Seek to find ways in which they can live as a saint instead of hiding behind an alter ego

Day Four Nemesis 1st John 3:7-10 (Your nemesis will try to lead you astray, but God will bring you back.) Additional Scripture: Matthew 4:1-11

Focus Points • Recognize their arch nemesis • Recognize how to defeat their arch nemesis • Realize that forgiveness is a part of any rivalry • Know that what they do everyday can effect their communities and even the world

ISSUE 7 AUGUST 2008 VOLUME 8

Day Five Superfriends Luke 5:17-20 (Jesus healing a paralytic. Friends will go to extreme measures in order to lend a hand.) Additional Scripture Mark 14:12-19

Focus Points • Learn about the importance of faithful friends • Recognize that saints are created to live in a faith community.

Day Six Mission Micah 6:8 (The Lord’s requirements. It is possible to be an everyday saint.) Additional Scripture Matthew 16:24-26; Matthew 28:19-20; John 21:15-7; Matthew 25:31-40

Focus Points • Learn the difference between Mission Impossible versus Mission Possible • Realize what their everyday mission as an everyday saint is

See you in Church

Pastor Paul

A Message from the Congregational Council President

Dear Fellow Members of Emanuel’s, Our Council meeting for the month of July was cancelled due to a number of family activities and vacations taking place the week of the Fourth of July and Pastor Paul’s attendance with our Confirmands at camp the following week. We will meet at our regularly scheduled time on Wednesday, August 13 at 6:15 and, again, we welcome your attendance. Also, there is a special time set aside on the agenda each month for “Member Issues” to give you an opportunity to speak or ask questions if you would like. As the minutes for the June meeting have not yet been approved due to the cancellation of the July meeting, they will be posted in the narthex and on the board outside the office following the August meeting for you to review. Thank you again for your participation in all of the activities that took place the month of June. We were very busy educating not only our own youth, but so many from our surrounding community too, and your interest and assistance in all of those programs is another sign of your commitment to Emanuel’s and the furtherance of our ministries. May God bless each and every one of you. Sincerely, Deb Haug Congregation Council President

Adult Sunday School BE A PART OF THE ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAM AT EMANUEL'S During the 9:15 Sunday School hour both the Men's Bible Class and the Women's Bible Class will study the book of James following the format in the Augsburg Adult Bible Studies by Walter Bouzard. The Women's Class is led by Evelyn Streng and the Men's, Dennis Sagebiel. On August 3 the Covenant Sunday School Class will be led by Jeanne Palmer, a professional counselor. Jeanne will lead a discussion on questions that were asked during the "Who is Welcome? series and also explore three pages of the Social Statement on Human Sexuality that needs a response to the ELCA by Nov. 1. On August 10 Bob Elliott who is active in the Roman Catholic lay ministry will help explain the Catholic viewpoint on issues difficult for us Lutherans such as annulment, the power of the Pope, etc. We thank Dennis Martin and John and Jeannine Schwartz for arranging this opportunity for understanding. On August 17 a course on Adult Catechism will begin. This course was written by Dr. William Russell, a professor of Theology at TLU and an ordained ELCA pastor. The material used will be Luther's Small Catechism. Dr. Russell will teach on August 17 and 31. He will be leading both worship services on August 24. That day John Schwartz who is a retired ELCA pastor, a former theology teacher at TLU and also a scholar in this area, will lead the class. BE A LIFELONG LEARNER! The Welcome Mat is out to both members and nonmembers. For suggestions on future topics or teachers please contact Virginia Balter at 830-433-4280

CHILDREN AND YOUTH NEWS Our new Sunday School year will begin with Rally Day on August 17. The children and their families will meet together on this day in the Fellowship Hall and then move into their classes. Families of the confirmation class members and families of the children ages 4 – second grade are invited to accompany their children to their classrooms to learn more about the plans for their classes. Children ages 4 – Second Grade will come together this year for Godly Play, a Montessori-based Sunday School program by Episcopal priest Jerome Berryman. Based on an understanding that the child has an innate sense of the Holy, children experience and learn the use of religious language through parables, sacred story, silence, and liturgical action. Following the story there is a time for “wondering” and response. Children in Grades One and Two may choose a separate room for their “response” time. Teachers are excited about the support of Emanuel’s in making this program possible. Children in Grades 3, 4, 5, and 6 will be together for Sunday School Bible Study. Teacher Cindy Schrank and assistant Jane Foreman plan lessons to capture the children’s interest. The Fall studies will begin with Old Testament Heroes and Bible history. Students in Grades 7 and 8 will join Johnnie Jordan and Pastor Paul in the first-floor classroom for their Confirmation Class. Their instruction during this year will be the Bible History segment of Confirmation instruction. High school students will meet in the Youth Room near the Fellowship Hall with teachers Lory Alves and Dan Alexander, who also assist with planning for ELYO activities. A big emphasis during this year will be looking forward to attendance at the ELYO New Orleans Youth Gathering during the summer of 2009.

LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF PROJECTS FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH

Good at puzzles? Teens are invited to help with cutting and fitting various shaped

pieces of fabric together to create a 60x80-inch puzzle and sewing the pieces into quilt tops for Lutheran World Relief Quilts. During these final days of summer, why not join us on Monday afternoons from one-to-five for some creative puzzling to benefit LWR. Puzzled? Call Elin Oelke at 303-5440.

During this month when school supplies are on sale children are invited to bring to Sunday School supplies to help make School Kits which are distributed around the world by LWR in countries experiencing poverty or natural disasters. The following items are included in each school kit:

• Padded or spiral notebooks of ruled paper approximately 8" X 10-1/2" totaling 150-200 sheets (if using 70-count notebooks, please include three); do not include loose-leaf paper

• One blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well) • One 30-centimeter ruler, or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other • One pencil sharpener

• Six new, unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; secure together with a rubber band • One eraser approximately 2-1/2" long • 12 sheets of construction paper in assorted colors (if necessary, fold in half to fit

into the school kit bag) • One box of 16 or 24 crayons

ELYO

RSVP by July 28 to 830-372-0826

The goal for this kick-off is for many people to come, whether they are youth, parents, grandparents, or any other congregation members to participate in or support us as we prepare for the gathering.

OUR SUNDAY SCHOOL IS NEEDING some household items for our Bible storytime and for our crafts. We still need more corks from wine bottles; they become people for our Bible storytime. (One quite small beloved cork, permanently designated by the children as Zacchaeus, continues to appear as a bystander in Bible stories where he never was before!) Please drop them off at the Sunday School room across the hall from the church office. We need persons for a couple of one-time tasks:

• someone to set up a couple of old computers to use for Bible games • someone to saw (and sand) some plywood into rectangles for our Bible stories for

Advent and Easter We need persons who will, on a rotating schedule:

• serve as a SS usher at the Mountain Street entrance to assist children in getting to their classes. This would be a great opportunity for persons who attend the 8 a.m. worship to serve and to become acquainted with the children and their families.

• tell the Bible story in the Godly Play classroom for young children. • serve as a “door person” for the Godly Play classroom. • be an assistant or substitute teacher for Sunday School. • assist Heidi Koepsel in the nursery during the SS hour and during 10:30 a.m. worship.

These are not lifetime commitments, but they are great opportunities to bring joy into your life! Call Elin Oelke at 303-5440.

“They Came to the Waters” Three members of Emanuel’s were among the more than 2000 ELCA women (and some men) gathered in Salt Lake City from July 10-13. Barbara Effenberger, Jane Foreman, and Evelyn Streng came to this “Triennial” gathering under the theme, “Come to the Waters”. To help “celebrate the life-giving waters of baptism and to drink in all that Jesus offers” there were Bible Studies, speakers, workshops, service opportunities and worship. Huge background screens in the convention hall featured changing water scenery. In processionals, streamers of aqua and blue and “sprinkling” from bowls accented the idea! International guests in native garb added color. Music by a young group was lively (some selected from our new hymnal, ELW). In the plenary (business) sessions held a day earlier, a member of a neighboring congregation, Charlene Spillman of Ebenezer, Maxwell, was elected vice-president of the Women of ELCA. On Thursday evening the ELCA visitors were invited to the regular rehearsal of the 360-voice Mormon Tabernacle Choir in the Conference Center on Temple Square. There was also a different choir opportunity at the gathering for ELCA women to attend several hours of rehearsal and to sing in the concluding service on Sunday morning. Jane enjoyed this experience with 240 others! Those in attendance had brought “in-kind” gifts, and there was time for assembling them as well as making LWR quilts, knitting “preemie caps”, etc. A large well of boxes packed with assembled gifts kept building. At the first of two communion services, with Pastor Marysol Diaz of Puerto Rico preaching and Bishop Mark Hanson presiding, the $31,617 gathered was designated for Thankoffering. Sister Joan Chittister, keynoter, spoke on “Women, Power, and Peace”. A long, patient line later formed in the extensive Augsburg Press display for her to autograph copies of some of her books! Barbara and Evelyn have attended such church-wide events before (as in Washington, D.C. and the previous “Triennial” in San Antonio.) “First-timers” like Jane were identified. What was her reaction to this event? “I was impressed..enlightened..I saw so much dedication, from the volunteer Mormon choir members as also the efforts of those in wheelchairs or with walkers to be apart of it all. I was spiritually filled”. The next “Triennial” isn’t until 2011 in Spokane, but some smaller and similarly inspiring church-wide events (as Global Mission Events) happen every year. Stay tuned! Evelyn Streng

A Prayer Attributed to St. Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that I receive; it is in pardoning that I am pardoned; and it is in dying that I am born to

Emanuel’s Mail

Dear Emanuel’s, What a blessing to receive thoughts, prayers, and cards from so many members of my church. Thanks to God’s healing hands, I am mending quickly and I praise God for this congregation and its concern for me. Elaine Giesber

Dear Friends:

On behalf of Texas Lutheran University, I want to thank you for the gift of $200.00. Your continuing support of the Congregational Aid Program makes a difference – helping TLU prepare a new generation of leaders for service in the world.

Only through the generosity of donors like you can Texas Lutheran continue to provide this vital community of faith and learning – this wonderful place where students thrive, mature and go forth to serve the common good.

Thank you again for your contribution and your partnership with Texas Lutheran University. Together, we are making a difference in the world.

Sincerely, Ann M. Svennungsen President

Dear Friends, Thank you for remembering my 93rd birthday with the lovely card. Sincerely Hortense Greiner

Dear Emanuel’s Church I would like to thank you very much for paying for me to go to camp. I enjoyed myself very much, although it was different from my normal lifestyle. I learned many things about God and His word. I also learned about poverty on hunger Wednesday, and also made new friends along the way. I thank you again for letting me go, and I hope to go back soon!

Thank you, Sydney McGovern

The 529 Plan has now been set up for Elle. If you want to make a contribution… Checks should be made payable, and mailed to Utah Educational Savings Plan, PO Box 145100, Salt Lake City, UT 84114-5100. Be sure to include the UESP account number (200812948) and beneficiary’s name (Elle Anne Lindenberg) on the check.

Dear Emanuel’s Church, This past week I participated in a camp called Camp Chrysalis. It was a wonderful experience. On Wednesday morning we did co-ops, which were activities that involved a lot of teamwork, and for co-ops that day, we had to climb a rock wall and once we got up to the top we had to zip down the zip line. Climbing the Rockwall was the most difficult task I have done to date. But I’m glad I did it. So I want to thank you for letting us participate in this joyful, hard-working experience! ☺ It was a BLAST!

With Love, Krystal Medina

Dear Fellow Members: Thank you for allowing me to attend the Confirmation Camp. Although I was younger than the other campers, I got a lot out of it. Sincerely, Bob Zwarich
