The Bee Gees, KC and the Sunshine Band, Donna Summer, and Earth Wind and Fire, if these names summon up images of disco balls, disco boots, bell bottoms, and guys with big hair, then the Bemus Bay Pops has a concert for you. The psychedelic disco group Boogie Wonder Band will be hustling into Bemus Bay on Saturday August 11th to perform their energetic mix of disco funk, time warping music. Perhaps no one sums the joy of the music better than Boogie Cindy, bass player for the band. Although she admits to being pretty young during the era, her love for the music has never been stronger. “This music for me has never aged. It’s a fun party, with dancing, it’s all positive stuff.” She refers to their concerts as “two hours of disco therapy.” Boogie Cindy started playing bass

Just when I thought I had reached the peak of my summer fun, I found a whole new level to take it to! Yesterday I had the opportunity to fly the skies over Chautauqua Lake with a talented stunt pilot. The pilots marvelous stunt plane allowed me a unique view of our region very few folks get to see. And I must admit, I had my eyes open most of the time… As we swirled, twirled, climbed and plummeted through the sky, my brain worked overtime to identify places and landmarks I knew. For as beautiful our region is from the ground, the aerial view is simply spectacular! The

green forest canopy over the hills and mountains, the vast vineyards of our wine country, it was all so very striking, and the crystal blue waters of Chautauqua Lake – breathtaking. The boats all looked like tiny dots until my pilot took us in for a closer look. Such fun! I’ve always known how fortunate we are to live in such a scenic part of the state, but getting above it all really gives one an indelible impression of its true beauty. We should all thank our lucky stars to be in this place at this particular time. Enjoy every day to its fullest! Until next week… JZ

This December, they will join 2008 Olympic all-around gymnastics champion Nastia Liukin and a cast of 2014 Sochi figure skating hopefuls when the Progressive® Skating & Gymnastics Spectacular comes to the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena in Jamestown, NY, on December 15, 2012. Tickets for the show went on sale on July 27, 2012 at 11am. The show will be taped in front of a live audience for a national telecast on Saturday, January 19, 2013, on NBC, which is part of the Pandora NBC Skating Series. Earlier this year, she successfully defended her national all-around title and figures to be in contention for the most individual Summer Games medals. After finishing second at the 2012 Visa National Championships and topping the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials all-around competition, Gabrielle (Gabby) Douglas secured her spot on the 2012 London team. Previously, Leyva captured the 2011 U.S. national all-around gold and was the 2011 World champion on the parallel bars. John Orozco is the 2012 Visa National Championships all-around champion. Orozco punched his ticket to London after recently finishing in second place at the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials in San Jose, CA. Joining Wieber, Douglas, Raisman, Leyva and Orozco is 2008 Olympic all-around champion Nastia Liukin, returning for her sixth appearance in the show. Liukin, one of the most decorated gymnasts in U.S. history, brought home an additional three silver medals (team, uneven bars and balance beam) and a bronze medal in the floor exercise from the Beijing Games. More gymnasts will be added to the show’s cast following the London Games. The cast of gymnasts will be joined by a lineup of figure skaters looking ahead to the 2014 Olympic Games to be held in Sochi, Russia. The figure skating cast will be

On National Marina Day marinas across the United States are asked to celebrate and promote their industry by inviting politicians, civic leaders and the public to their facilities to show them the important role marinas play across the nation as family-friendly gateways to boating, and the responsibility marina personnel have as stewards of the environment. How did National Marina Day begin? In February of 2001, AMI’s Board of Directors, sensing a need to promote the marina industry’s already positive image, approved the creation of a national grassroots, public education initiative called National Marina Day. In the summer of 2001, AMI officially proclaimed the second Saturday of August (this has since

“Painters Who Pot: Potters Who Paint”, an Invitational Show installed at the Portage Hill Art Gallery on Rte 394 between Mayville and Westfield, will run for the month of August. The show will include the work of Stephanie Brash, Audrey Kay Dowling and Jim Reno. The artist reception for this show will occur on Sunday, August 5th from 7-9 at the gallery. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun of meeting the artists and sharing a cake to celebrate the 30th year of business of Portage Hill Art Gallery! Gallery owner Audrey Kay Dowling has worked in both media throughout her career as an artist. She is also an avid reader of artist’s biographies. In her reading she noticed that a number of internationally well-known painters, including Picasso, Vlaminck, Gauguin, Matisse, and Jackson Pollock and others had also made pottery during their painting careers. When developing the concept of this show, Audrey started to consider what crossovers exist between the mediums and the regional artists best known for their quality and use of both clay and 2D media. Jim Reno and Stephanie Brash were logical choices to add to Audrey’s own multi media works in this show. In a conversation with Stephanie Brash about her motives for working in both clay and paint and drawing media, Stephanie explained that she is an interdisciplinary artist who has always worked in both two and three dimensions to express her interest in figurative and representational forms, animals and narrative works that investigate memory and familial relationships. Her early two-dimensional works were drawings and paintings in oils, oil pastel and acrylics while three-dimensional works were masks and sculpture in paper-mache. Now she is working primarily in clay.

Painters Who Pot Art ShowAugust Show at Portage HIll Gallery; Reception August 5

“I stumbled upon clay and it has become a passion. It is very different from painting yet I find similarities. I love the idea of making objects that are intended to be interacted with on a direct physical level just as I have in making each piece,” she said, “Painting is a different matter. I start with an empty space and fill it. With clay the mass is there from the beginning. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy painting but is feels more illusory. Sometimes my process with clay feels like three-dimensional drawing with the incising of line, texture, dealing with edges and positive and negative space.” Audrey Kay Dowling has used different painting and clay techniques throughout her 35-year art career. Her first Best in Show in Professional Crafts Award at the Bestor Plaza Show on the grounds of Chautauqua was given to her ceramic Noah’s ark the year in 1975. The following year a quilted piece of hers was accepted into a National Show in Greenburg, Pa and she was also invited to participate in a national watercolor show that took place in Goshen, NY. From these early times of showing and exploring many different media as forms of self- expression, Audrey has continued to let what she wants to express dictate the media she will use, rather than choosing the media and then deciding what to say. “I love to let my creativity fly and see no reason to limit myself as I work in my different studios. The most fun of all occurs when I intersect lots of different visual art forms. I expect to be exploring more and more in that direction.” In addition to mixed media pieces and painting on clay pieces Audrey does paint in more traditional manners, primarily using oils and gouache. Her clay work includes award winning one of a kind vases as well as functional pottery glazed in the sky, water and earth colors of the Lake Erie landscape that she

so deeply loves.Jim Reno has been a potter in the Chautauqua region the longest of the three artists represented in this show. With his wife Pat, he has enjoyed a very successful career making pots for over 40 years. Jim is best known for his functional porcelain work featuring his dragonflies, crows, chickens and his newest motif, Great Blue Herons, but he is also an avid painter who paints using oils on canvas almost daily. “I just make pots and do some painting and I’m not even very receptive to formal schooling in art”, says Jim, “What would have happened to Matisse or Picasso if they’d gone for that MFA?” He continues, “The crossover between painting and ceramics seems quite remote to me. To draw a picture of a pot and then produce it never seems to work for me. Historically many painters have worked in clay, but the connection alwaysseems tenuous. Maybe it’s all about drawing. To draw on a flat surface is interesting, but on a curved form it really gets intriguing. The work of Rudy Autio comes to mind.” Portage Hill Art Gallery is in its 30th year of serving its mission of bringing high quality regional artwork to the public. Donald and Audrey Dowling have been the owners since its inception. This Sunday reception that will be held from 7-9 PM on August 5 is a time that the Dowlings would like to use to thank all of their gallery friends for all of the years of support they have given to the regional artists. There will be a free drawing for a ceramic piece and cake will be served. Everyone is invited. Portage Hill Art Gallery is open daily 10-5 Monday through Saturday and closed Sunday throughout the month of August. They are located on Rte. 394 midway between Mayville and Westfield. ERA Team VP Real Estate is please to announce our 3rd annual Agents of Hope Golf Tournament to benefit the ALS Association and the ALS Division of MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association). The tournament will be held Wednesday, August 29th, 2012 at the Chautauqua Golf Club. ALS- Amyorophic lateral sclerosis – also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a disease of the motor neurons, the nerve clls in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. For unknown reasons, motor neurons die, and the muscles they control become weak and then nonfunctional. Eventually, the person with ALS is paralyzed. Death, usually from respiratory complications, typically occurs between 3 and 5 years after diagnosis. However, about 10% of people with ALS live more than 10 years, and some survive for decades.

Agents Of HopeERA Team VP Real Estate Tournament to Benefit ALSA &MDA-ALS

Established in 1985, the ALS Association’s mission is to lead the fight to cure and treat ALS through global cutting-edge research, and to empower people with Lou Gehrig’s Disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them compassionate care and support. The ALS Association has committed more than $67 million to find effective treatments and a cure for Lou Gehrig’s Disease. MDA’s involvement with ALS began in the early 1950s when Eleanor Gehrig, widow of bellowed Yankees first basemen Lou Gehrig, was searching for a way to fight the disease that had taken her husband’s life. Mrs. Gehrig served more than a decade as MDA National Campaign Chairman. Since inception, MDA has dedicated more than $290 million to ALS research, services and information programs.

New techniques and products are continually emerging that make it increasingly possible for people with ALS to adapt to the disease, to pursue their intersts, and to continue to live rich and rewarding lives. The ALS Association, as well as the MDA-ALS Division’s research, services, advocacy and information programs are made possible through the generosity of individuals, sponsors and private contributors. (For more information visit alsa.org or als-mda.org). As you’re determine your financial and charitable goals for 2012 please take time to consider joining our team, Agents of Hope, in the fight against ALS. Your time and consideration are greatly appreciated. For more information on the event, to sign up, or sponsorship contact Hanna Soffel at 716-789-2093 or email [email protected]

as a young girl, and became one of the founding members of the band in 1996. Since then the band has formed a reputation for outrageous costumes, and solid musicianship. “It’s fun music, and all live. We don’t play any tracks,” she says referring to prerecorded music some bands use to augment their live shows. But the ten piece band has no trouble filling a concert hall, they play to sold out venues

wherever they go. “We have been lucky, very blessed. We have a big following in the US and Canada.” Even the audience is encouraged to wear disco costumes to the show. When asked about it she exclaims, “It gives you a chance to be someone else. You can have so much more fun. It frees them!” Besides Boogie Cindy (bass guitar), the band members are: Eddie T (percussion), Dr. Tony Fever (trumpet), Luke Anderson (drummer), Jack Wrangler (guitar), Isaac “The Jam” Washington (singer), Marky de Sax (saxophone), Honey Jaz Jackson (vocals), Cadillac Jones (keyboards), and Stardust

(vocals). Their versions of the hits of the 70’s and early 80’s have a decidedly kinetic beat, and you can bet that everybody will be up and dancing during the show. The concert at the Bemus Bay Pops will mark the third time Boogie Wonder Band has played at Bemus Bay and is a benefit for Crèche and WCA Hospital in Jamestown. Crèche a non-profit organization that helps support the needs of Jamestown area kids from newborns through 18 years old. As Boogie Cindy says, “Lets party for a good cause. We can make those children better through the magic of disco.”
