Current state of caregiving• Four in 10 caregivers say they weren’t prepared to take on

the role of family caregiver.

• Over half of survey respondents stated they’re stressed (51%) or worried (51%), and many are overwhelmed (40%).

• More than half of caregivers (54%) say they have experienced an unexpected joy in caregiving.

• On the other hand, about a quarter (24%) say they have regrets.

Signs of caregiver burnout

• Emotional and physical exhaustion

• Withdrawal from friends, family and other loved ones

• Loss of interest in activities which you previously enjoyed

• Changes in appetite, weight or both

• Changes in sleep patterns

• Feelings of alienation, helplessness or hopelessness

• Lack of energy to do new things

• Feelings of wanting to hurt yourself or the person you’re caring for

• Excessive use of alcohol, medications or sleeping pills

Tips to avoid burnout• Remind yourself that your work has

value.

• Find ways to communicate.

• Join a support group.

• Get organized.

• Nurture the positive relationships in your life.

• Give yourself a break.

• Don’t forget to take care of your own health.
