Tonight’s learning objectives

2

We want you to be able to:

• understand that a skills deficit (self-regulation and/or friendship skills) can lead a child to engage in bullying behaviours and/or leave that child more vulnerable to bullying.

• leave with practical strategies for helping a child who is struggling, whether that child is their own child or another child they care about and/or work with.

FRIENDSHIP SKILLS

Recognize that friendship skills don’t come easily to or naturally for every child. Friendships may be particularly difficult for children who are struggling with mental health, neurodevelopmental, and/or behavioural challenge. Your child may need a little extra help learning how to regulate his emotions and his attention and some extra practice understanding how friendships work.

FRIENDSHIP SKILLS

Consider what is realistic for your child right nowRespect your child’s temperament and consider where he is at developmentally as you look for ways to encourage your child to work on his friendship skills. Examples:

Can you think of an extra-curricular activity that he would enjoy and that would provide him with opportunities to work on his friendship skills? Is he ready to have a friend join him on a family outing?

FRIENDSHIP SKILLSHelp your child to understand how friendships workDissect social encounters—both situations your child has been directly involved in and situations he has observed (including situations in books he has read or movies he has watched).Role-play different outcomes to the same situation. What could you do or say differently? How might that affect the way things turn out?Encourage your child to see the same situation from different perspectives. (Consider how different the view is if you sit on different sides of the same room.)

BULLYING

Some children face an increased risk of being bullied. Children who show signs of depression, anxiety, or excessive aggression at the time they enter first grade are at risk of being chronically victimized by their classmates two years later.

BULLYING

What parents and teachers can do to helpHelp children to work on any underlying areas of difficulty, so they won’t be as vulnerable to being bullied. Children who are rejected by their peers early on miss out on the opportunity to socialize with other children, causing them to fall behind their peers when it comes to understanding how relationships work.Help your child to be emotionally literate. Talk about how emotions work and how we can ensure that they work for, not against, us.
