INDIVIDUAL RESPONSE TECHNOLOGY TO PROMOTE ACTIVE LEARNING WITHIN THE CARING SCIENCES One major challenge in delivering lectures to large and diverse classes is the maintenance of a high standard of lecturing in order to engage students and increase their participation and involvement. The lecturer’s assignment is to arrange and prepare the lecture before teaching, hence enabling students’ enhanced learning. Individual response technology could encourage students’ active learning and activate higher cognitive levels.

ACTIVE LEARNING IN THE CLASSROOM RETURNSUW-Madison’s Educational Innovation is focused on pervasive active learning to improve the student experience on campus. The Active Learning in the Classroom series returns spring semester to support these efforts. The series provides instructors approaches that can:• Be implemented easily into courses without extensive course redesign;• Encourage active dialogue between instructors and students;• Help instructors ascertain comprehension of course content with the goal of identifying

gaps and misconceptions early; and• Facilitate deeper, higher-level learning for students.100% of fall participants surveyed agreed that the sessions helped them think critically about and feel more comfortable using the approaches in the classroom to engage students. Join us to learn how you can do the same!

QUOTES FROM CAMPUS“Although I am aware that different is not necessarily better and that change can be hard, there is substantial evidence that blended learning strategies can improve student performance, retention, and participation and faculty should be open to evolving their teaching to include these strategies. Eventually Blended Learning will just be Learning as institutions, faculty, and students become more aware of and embrace the many different teaching and learning methods that are available today, as well as those of the future.”

FEBRUARY 24 LEARNING SPACES EVENTEducational Innovation efforts have focused campus conversation around pervasive active learning. This brings up questions around the types of spaces we need on campus. Blended Learning Fellows are working with Steve Cramer, Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning, to think about the types of spaces we need for our blended courses. Below are some suggestions for how we can think strategically about learning spaces:• Review the Learning Spaces Improvement Report (blendedtoolkit.wisc.edu/documents/

learning-spaces-report/) from the Provost’s Office and Facilities Planning and Management.• Review the student learning outcomes for your program at the Student Learning Assessment

site out of the Office of the Provost (provost.wisc.edu/inside-assessment/). Think about how learning spaces contribute to these outcomes. Are there some strategic connections you can make between these outcomes and the types of space your programs need to be successful?

• Think about your current courses and the role space plays in the success of your course objectives. What is completely unacceptable about the space you use? If there was one improvement to your classroom space that would make a difference to the success of your course, what would it be?

• Attend the Blended Learning Spaces event on Friday, February 24, 2017, 12:00noon-1:30pm at Union South to develop a strategic plan for campus leadership on space for blended courses. All past participants of Blend@UW and Blended Learning Fellowship Program are invited. - REGISTER NOW
