We are Bedford!

As you enjoy the beauty this area has to offer, remember

it’s truly the people that make us unique. The small shop owner in Centertown, the entrepreneur in Forest, the marina owner at Smith Mountain Lake, the orchard owner, farmer, and countless other individuals pursuing their dreams make our community so appealing. We invite you to share in our amazement of an area rich in history and traditions. As you absorb all this community has to offer, be sure to take a moment to talk to those individuals who are truly living their dreams here in Bedford.

The D-Day Memorial, Poplar Forest, Bedford Museum, Peaks of Otter and Smith Mountain Lake are just a few of the opportunities available for you to enjoy during your visit. Take a stroll in downtown Bedford and

witness the resurgence of energy and activity. You will be amazed by the new businesses that have opened in just the past few months. It’s exciting to see, and that excitement is contagious with even more businesses planning to invest in our community. And the enthusiasm isn’t limited to downtown Bedford. The Forest area continues its steady growth, and Downtown Moneta and Smith Mountain Lake offer a wide variety of housing, entertainment, recreation and shopping opportunities for the entire family.

We are Bedford, and we have so much to offer our visitors. Plan to spend a few days with us and you will see how quickly you turn from stranger to friend. After all, we were all strangers here at one time and it’s how we choose to represent this area that makes Bedford so distinctive.

Warm regards,

Economic development comes easily to Bedford County. Local government officials, including those with the economic Development

Authority (eDA), run a thoroughly economy-stimulating agenda. Bedford County Administrator Kathleen Guzi said there are a few key ways in which the county and its leaders encourage economic success.

“Bedford offers companies such a high-quality, well-educated workforce in addition to the land and infrastructure required for business growth,” said Guzi. “The eDA is decidedly pro-active and has been for many years. The eDA supports a full existing business program geared to assist the wide variety of businesses that are located here.”

Recently, many new commercial enterprises have cropped up in the Bedford area. Guzi said most have been small businesses and retail establishments.

“Rather than one or two large new businesses, the past year has brought a wide variety of new commercial businesses in both the Forest and Moneta areas of Bedford County,” she said. “Some

of these include a large apartment complex with multiple buildings, several new banks, pharmacies, retail shops of many types, and a number of restaurants, both sit-down and fast food.”

Bill Hoy, County Public Information Officer, said businesses like these follow residential development, which can only happen if the foundational elements of infrastructure, like water lines and sewer systems, are provided.

“You don’t get large housing without water and sewer; then retail follows rooftops,” Hoy said. “A lot of retailers also need water and sewer to operate. Any time you put in water and sewer, you open up that whole area. In terms of infrastructure, we have done quite a bit of improving, which allows economic development to happen.”

One example of Bedford’s expanding commercial network is the Center for Advanced engineering and

Research (CAeR). Located in the recently built New London Business and Technology Center, the CAeR will draw business and training activity from several related industries to Bedford County.

“The CAeR has been totally engaged in the construction of its building over the past year, but the facility is scheduled to open during Spring/Summer, with a grand opening event to be held later in the year,” Guzi said. “One of the most significant features of the building will be the tower encased B&W test loop, which feeds a prototype [non-nuclear] reactor for testing, and later, training purposes.”

Bedford County authorities understand residential growth and economic development go hand-in-hand. Guzi said Bedford offers all the right factors for current prosperity and a promising future. She is happy to report strong evidence for both.

“Certain manufacturers and a number of service businesses have begun to add personnel after the difficult economic period of the past two years,” said Guzi. “Combined with the quality of life one finds in Central Virginia, it’s easy to see why businesses like to stay and grow.”

History is richly woven into the community highlights of modern day Bedford. Two of the area’s most prominent attractions – the National D-Day Memorial and Thomas

Jefferson’s Poplar Forest – are places of high tribute to monumental people and events of yesteryear.

National D-Day MemorialTen years ago, Bedford County became home to the National D-Day Memorial. The monument, dedicated by President Bush on June 6, 2001, is a powerful tribute to all veterans of World War II and a special source of pride for Bedford residents.

D-Day Memorial Director of education April Cheek-Messier explained: “On June 6, 1944, Allied soldiers held the beaches of Normandy firmly, but at a cost

shadow of the National D-Day Memorial’s Overlord Arch.

with 4,413 who lost their lives in the effort, including 19 sons of Bedford. The loss was a devastating blow to the close-knit community of just over 3,200 citizens, but it also earned Bedford the distinction of sustaining the highest per capita D-Day losses in the nation.”

Honored by the tribute, Bedford residents have provided tremendous support to the memorial.

“Local citizens have given their time, talents, and funding over the years to keep the Memorial operating,” Cheek-Messier said. “Volunteers provide tours, give information to visitors, work in the gift shop, assist in the archives, and help with programming, landscaping, and numerous other tasks as needed.”

The D-Day Memorial has welcomed more than

one million visitors since its establishment. Funding the attraction has been a challenge to the Memorial’s Foundation and Cheek-Messier said the National Park Service is conducting a feasibility study to possibly make the Memorial a National Park. The process can take up to two years but in the meantime the monument is well maintained by the people of Bedford.

“Local businesses support events, citizens renew memberships annually, and individuals and corporations make contributions that year after year have kept the Memorial open and operating,” said Cheek-Messier. “The Memorial is grateful to the community for its continued support and dedication.”

Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar ForestMany famous historic figures have passed through or resided in Bedford County, but not many left their mark so distinctly as our nation’s third president.

“Poplar Forest was Thomas Jefferson’s personal retreat,” said Director of Public Relations Anna Bentson. “Thomas Jefferson designed and created it for his own use. It is an exciting opportunity to be there at the beginning.”

At Poplar Forest, visitors get to witness archaeologists bringing new information to light and craftsmen restoring the space.

“Visitors can view meticulous historic restoration in progress at the house Jefferson considered his best design for the life of a private citizen; tour the house to learn about architecture, preservation and life in the early 19th-century; see ongoing excavation and view artifacts from the plantation community that lived and worked at Poplar Forest,” said Bentson.

In addition, Poplar Forest hosts numerous special events each year, including musical performances, theater productions and lectures. The events draw attendees from all over the region and raise funds to support the landmark. The annual Thomas Jefferson Wine Festival underscores winemaking – a passion of Jefferson’s and a thriving Bedford industry today.

“The Bedford/Lynchburg area boasts multiple wineries, including the five wineries comprising the Bedford Wine Trail,” said Bentson. “Now in its third year, the Thomas Jefferson Wine Festival is a regional partnership between Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest, the Bedford City & County Department of Tourism and the Lynchburg Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau. The day-long festival features 12 Virginia wineries, local food purveyors and artisans and crafters.”

Whether you’re looking for the perfect community to raise a family or a quiet spot to spend glorious retirement days, you’ll find it in Bedford County. Our

communities offer history, culture, amenities and exceptional scenic beauty.

Bedford City and CentertownBedford is the quintessential small town, with its courthouse, library, post office, rustic churches and stalwart sycamore trees. However, the town is not stuck in the past. It is vital and growing, spreading to encompass new residents and businesses. Bedford supports excellent schools, healthcare, transportation and infrastructure. It is a superb place to live – tied to its rural surroundings and unmatched recreation, but offering the vitality of community and the activity of commerce and culture

Centertown, truly the heart of Bedford, is host to a thriving farmer’s market, an art and antique district, the Wharton House and Gardens, Historic Avenel and the Bower Center for the Arts. Residents and visitors enjoy events throughout the year, including CenterFest, a free celebration with arts, crafts, children’s activities, music and food. Also popular is 2nd Fridays, a free monthly street festival with art, live music, special events and extended hours for Centertown’s shops and restaurants. Find more information online at centertownbedford.com.

ForestOne of the fastest growing parts of Bedford County, Forest is an attractive place to both live and work. Flanked by the Blue Ridge Mountains and surrounded by beautiful farmland, Forest is home to

Life in Bedfordmany new housing developments and business parks. The area also features abundant shopping opportunities, including Forest Square with retail stores, banks, restaurants and a satellite office of the Bedford Area Chamber. The center’s Kroger, a food and drug store open 24 hours a day, is one of the largest in the region with 78,000 square feet.

Outdoor recreation is an important component of life for the residents of Forest, with golf and horseback riding popular. The town’s most well-known attraction is Poplar Forest, the restored home and personal retreat of President Thomas Jefferson. Forest also hosts a number of activities and events, including April’s ChocolateFest. The annual event features chocolate tastings by a variety of vendors, live music, children’s activities and contests.

Forest’s close proximity to Lynchburg (about a 10-minute drive) puts big-city activities within easy reach for residents who are heavily involved in their community’s activities.

Smith Mountain LakeThe southern edge of Bedford County borders a 22,000-acre retreat featuring abundant activities for water sport enthusiasts as well as those looking for some relaxation. Home to more than 20,000 people who thrive along its 500 miles of shoreline and delight in its waters, the lake continues to attract new residents, tourists and businesses. Created in the

1960s as a hydro-electric project, Smith Mountain Lake is also an ideal vacation spot. Sailing, fishing, boating, water-skiing, wakeboarding and jet-skiing are popular. Also plentiful are onshore activities such as golf, hiking and biking as well as fun-filled events such as the annual Beach Bash Sip-n-Shag Wine Festival.

Outlying AreasIn the western and northern part of the county are the communities of Montvale, Villamont, Thaxton, union, Kelso, Jordantown, Shady Grove and Mountain View. Montvale is one of the oldest villages in the county. It is believed that the infamous Beale Treasure from the early 1800s is located in this area and there have been numerous attempts to unravel this mystery. On the north side of the county, you can find several orchards with fantastic seasonal items

between Bedford City and Forest on Rt. 221, features scenic views of the Peaks of Otter, beautiful farms and many new housing developments. Big Island, located on the James River, is close to the Blue Ridge Parkway and Natural Bridge.

In the southwest part of the county are the villages of Goodview, Stewartsville, Chamblissburg and Moneta, which was once surrounded by canneries, dairies and farms. Now, because of its proximity to Smith Mountain Lake, there are shops, restaurants and many other community businesses and services to support lake residents and tourists. Huddleston, further east, is also a center of lake commerce. This village is home to SML State Park, a lakeside golf course and other recreation opportunities.
