Introduction
LSE welcomes you to the largest Summer School of its kind in Europe now celebrating its 28th
year.
We also want to welcome you to your new hall of residence and wish you a happy and productive
stay.
LSE halls are designed to help you make friends and be part of a first-class student community during
your studies. We do our best to make sure that your stay with us is rewarding, both socially and
academically.
The following pages will inform you of what to expect from your hall and the local area around it.
We look forward to your arrival at your hall over the Summer.
Welcome from your Warden
Dear Summer School Banksiders,
I would like to offer you a very warm welcome
to Bankside House. The residence is superbly
located in the vibrant South Bank area, with
art, music, theatre and film right on the
doorstep – be sure to take advantage of the
location while you are here! LSE is a (very
pleasant) 20 minute walk away, across the
river.
Bankside has an experienced team in place to
help you make the most of your stay here. The
Reception Team provide a smooth service
during your stay and if you have any questions
about your accommodation they will be happy
to help.
If you have any enquiries about your course
including timetables, course changes, event
tickets, exams or if you lose your LSE ID card
you should go to the Summer School Office,
located in Clement House, room CLM 1.02.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me or one of
the Sub-Wardens if we can offer assistance or
advice during your stay. I hope that you enjoy
your time at Bankside House and the LSE
Summer School.

Bankside House
Bankside House is LSE’s biggest hall of
residence with a great sense of community.
Over 250 rooms have private shower/toilet
facilities (including all twin rooms), the rest
sharing a shower/toilet suite with just one
other room.
The facilities are excellent and include a
student bar and games room as well as quiet
study areas, laundry room, table tennis and six
TV rooms. There's even a piano room.
One of the most attractive features of
Bankside House is its location. Situated on the
south bank of the Thames, the hall is only a
short walk from London’s stunning river front
and its many attractions.

Travel Information
To Bankside House: Bankside House is
situated at:

Closest tube stations: Southwark, London
Bridge. You can take public transport from all
major stations. Visit: TFL
To Campus: Bankside House is a 20-25 minute
walk to campus. To view directions on a map,
visit: Bankside to LSE
Public transport is available locally; Bankside
House is situated within a 10 minute walk
between both Southwark, London Bridge, and
Blackfriars Underground stations which will
bring you into central London within 15
minutes. There is also a bus (RV1) that takes
you close to campus. Visit: TFL
From Heathrow: The best way to travel from
Heathrow airport to central London is the
London Underground Piccadilly Line if you are
carrying light luggage. Another quick option is
the Heathrow Express. It runs from Heathrow
to Paddington Station every 15 minutes.
National Express also runs a coach service to
Victoria.

Taxis: If you are carrying heavy luggage, you
may want to consider taking a taxi to Bankside
House. The safest and easiest way to book a
taxi is using the TFL Cabwise service.
You can access the Cabwise telephone
number or download their iPhone or Android
app by visiting: Cabwise
Only licensed taxis (black cabs) can pick up
passengers on the street. It is important to be
wary of unlicensed minicabs.

When you arrive and depart On arrival at your hall, you’ll need to check-in
and pick up your key from the reception desk.
This can be done from 3pm onwards. If you
arrive before 3pm, you will not be able to gain
access to your room, but we do provide
luggage storage space, so you can drop your
bags off at the hall before checking in at 3pm.
On the day of departure, you’ll need to vacate
your room by 10.30am.
Summer School Welcome Helpers will be
present at each hall on the afternoon/evening
of Arrival Sunday.
There will be cupcakes and juice available to
refresh you after your journey.
The Welcome Helpers will also be available at
certain times throughout your stay
(dates/times will be advertised in your hall).
You’ll be able to find them in Reception or the
Common Area and they’ll be easy to spot in
Summer School T-Shirts.
They’ll be able to help with any questions you
might have about the hall, the local area or
the support available to you during your stay.
What do you need to bring?
Bankside House has a number of facilities for
you to access including an inexpensive laundry
room. You are also provided with fresh towels
and bed linen throughout.
If you are travelling from abroad, you are
advised to bring a UK power adaptor with you.
You will be unable to use any electrical goods
unless you have one. You should also make
sure that your electrical equipment is
compatible with UK standards. To learn more

Remember to check your flight’s luggage
allowance before travelling and make sure
you know what items can and can’t be taken

Catering on Campus
4th Floor Restaurant Old Building, Houghton Street 8am - 3pm This is the largest catering outlet and offers traditional dishes, international specialities, vegetarian alternatives and a street food and salad bar. There is even a roof terrace for sunny days! LSE Garrick Corner of Houghton Street/Aldwych 8am – 6pm Downstairs serves premium cooked breakfasts and lunches, while the ground-floor coffee bar provides a great range of barista hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, sushi and cakes.
Plaza Café Opposite LSE Library 10am – 6pm Located right outside the library, grab a quick bite to eat and drink in this boutique coffee shop. Café 54 Ground Floor, New Academic Building 8.30am – 4.30pm Ideal place for ‘grab and go’; selection of sandwiches, sushi, ramen noodle pots and hot soups. The Bean Counter Basement, 32 Lincoln’s Inn Fields 10am – 3.30pm Speciality hot and cold barista drinks, cakes, sandwiches and hot snacks. Seating provided.
George IV Corner of Portugal/Portsmouth Street 12noon – 11pm The LSE’s very own traditional 19th Century pub. Serving ‘real’ ales and bar snacks.

Breakfast at Bankside House
Bankside House includes high quality dining
facilities and will provide you with breakfast
to get your day started.
Breakfast will generally be served from
7.30am – 10.00am, but times may vary at
weekends.
When choosing your breakfast you may select
either a English (Bacon, sausages, beans,
tomatoes, eggs, hash browns, mushrooms etc)
or continental (Juice, cereal, yoghurt, fruit,
croissants, cheese, meat and toast) breakfast.

Sightseeing
London is home to some of the world’s most
famous landmarks, such as the Palace of
Westminster, and the Tower of London. If
you’re new to London, why not pay a visit to

Food in London
London is one of the most diverse cities in the
world and this is reflected in the range of
cuisines available. Good food is never far away
no matter what your tastes, culture or budget.
Have a browse in Timeout for the most

For light bites and cooking, a range of produce
and street food can be found in London’s
many markets.
Borough market is a great central example.
The food hound’s favourite market is also
London’s oldest, dating back to the
13th

Theatre and museums
LSE campus is situated near Covent Garden,
Leicester Square and London’s theatre land.
Across the river at Waterloo is the National
Theatre and Shakespeare’s Globe, both
famous for their quality.
To find any kind of play or musical in London,

Close by to Holborn station is the British
Museum. Other leading museums and
galleries are in close travelling distance by
foot or public transport.

Film in London
London has been a dominant force in British
cinema for over a century and its impact can
be felt throughout the city. Whatever your
taste in film there’s always something to keep
you entertained.
The British Film Institute (BFI) offers an
excellent range of cinema at venues close to

Nearby Leicester Square is home to many of
the country’s cinema chains and is also home
to the Prince Charles Cinema, famous for beer
and pizza nights and all-night marathons.

Activating your IT account
All Summer School students will be given LSE
IT accounts, including an LSE email address, to
use IT facilities at LSE. There are
approximately 1,000 networked Windows PCs
available and there is access to printing
facilities in the public computer rooms.
You’ll also have access to the Internet from

Staying safe on and around the campus
No matter what you expect to gain from your
time in London, primarily, you’re coming to
learn and enjoy yourself.
It’s important to take the proper precautions
to keep yourself safe while you study.
Be vigilant and make use of our security
measures.
Be careful not to have valuables on show.
Avoid walking alone at night and try to stay in
groups with your friends.
