WelcomeWe are glad you are here! Thank you for joining us for worship this Sunday. Members of this congregation have been gathering here to worship since 1804. Over the past two centuries our congregation has changed, but our mission remains the same: to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who encouraged believers to “do all the good you can, in all the ways you can.”

AttendancePlease let us know of your attendance this morning by completing the pew pad.

SACR A MENT OF HOLY COMMU NIONThe Lord is here. God’s Spirit is with us.Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to offer thanks and praise. It is right indeed, ever-living God, to give you thanks and praise through Christ your only Son. You are the source of all life and goodness; through your eternal Word you have created all things from the beginning.

Anthem LyricsYou were the Word at

the beginning - one with God the Lord Most High.

Your hidden glory in creation, now revealed

in You our Christ. What a beautiful Name it is, the name of Jesus Christ my

King. You didn't want heaven without us, so

Jesus, You brought heaven down. My sin was great,

Your love was greater. What could separate us now? What a wonderful

Name it is, the name of Jesus Christ my King.

Death could not hold You, the veil tore before You. You silenced the boast,

of sin and grave. The heavens are roaring, the praise of Your glory, for

You are raised to life again. You have no rival, You have no equal. Now and forever,

God, You reign. Yours is the Kingdom, Yours is the

glory. Yours is the Name above all names. What a powerful Name it is, the

Name of Jesus Christ my King.

Song LyricsO humble carpenter, down on Your hands

and knees, look on Your handiwork and build a

house so You may dwell in me. The work was

done with nothing but wood and nails in Your

scar-borne hands. O show me how to work

and praise, trusting that I am Your instrument. O

loving laborer with the sweat upon Your face, oh, build a table that I may too may join You

in the Father's place. The kingdom's come and built upon wood

and nails gripped with joyfulness, so send me out, within Your ways, knowing that the task is finished. The dead will rise and give You

praise. Wood and nails will not hold them down.

These wooden tombs, we'll break them soon and fashion them into

flower beds. The curse is done, the battle won, swords bent down into plowshares. Your scar-borne hands, we'll join

with them serving at the table You've prepared.

On the night he was betrayed, Jesus had a meal with his friends. He took a loaf of bread, and after giving thanks to God, he broke it and gave it to his disciples. He said, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” After supper Jesus took the cup of wine, and after giving thanks, he gave it to them and said, “Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, remember me." Let us pray: Creating God, we give you thanks for the grain farmers, the bread bakers, the grape growers, the juice makers. We see the fruits of the harvest, watch trees in the wind, inhale the fragrance of the seasons. Redeeming God, we give you thanks for all that we remember as we share this meal: your birth, your life, your death and resurrection, through Jesus Christ. Amen.

Receiving of the ElementsAt Athens First United Methodist Church, all are invited to commune at Christ’s table. If you need to be served in your pew, please call this to the attention of an usher. Gluten-free elements are available at the center station in the front of the sanctuary.

Music During Holy Communion“Wood and Nails” | Isaac Wardell, Keith Watts, and Madison Cunningham

Prayer After ReceivingSustaining God, like a generous friend you share the whole world with us, and fill our cup to overflowing. For your presence with us, around us, beneath us, within us, behind us, and in front of us: we, your children, are most grateful, and we thank you, Lord. May this meal we have shared renew us and inspire us to join more joyfully with you to work in this world. Amen.

THE CALL TO WORSHIPSusan Taylor

O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and the dry land, which his hands have formed. O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.
