Art3310c–ThematicProjectsinDrawingThisintermediateleveldrawingcourseplacesemphasison conceptualstrategiesandimageconstructionwithafocuson themesincolordrawingthroughthelensofthemesinfilm,literatureandart.

Utopia,DystopiaandthePostApocalypse–DrawingattheEndof theWorldUtopianFlyingMachines,MadMax,Huxley’sBraveNewWorld andPlato’sRepublicareallrichimaginativematerialforartists. Utopian,DystopianandPost-Apocalypticfiction,film,art, architectureandmusicwillbeusedassourcematerialforstudioprojectsthatexploreandexpandthebreadthofcontemporary drawingpracticeandtheuseofcolorindrawing.Studentswill buildasynthesisofobservational,visual,technicaland conceptualskillsinbothwetanddrydrawingmedia.Theclass willconsistofgroupdiscussionsaboutassignedmaterials, screenings,studiopractice,individualmeetingsandgroup critiques.

CourseObjectives

• Toexpandandexplorethedefinitionofdrawingincludinganobservationalrecordtoatime-based,conceptualtranscriptionofideas.

• Toemploythemesinfilm,literatureandartasalaunchingpadformakingcreativework.• Toinvestigatecolordrawingmedia:surfacesandmediafordrawing;forskilldevelopmentandto

question ‘why’materialchoicesaremadeandanalyzetheaffectthesematerialshaveandtoseamlesslymergeform andcontent.

• Toexploredrawingasautonomouspractice,asavehicleforfullyrealizedartistprojectsanddevelopedbodiesoffinisheddrawings.

• Tohonecritical-thinkingandverbalizationskillsthroughclasscritiqueofstudioworkanddiscussionofindividualresearchandreadingmaterial.
