Palm Springs Modernism Week 2011 includes many of the audiencefavorites such as the annual architecture symposium the Architectureand Design film series in association with Design Onscreen lecturesthe vintage car show and other activities that will be held in variousvenues throughout the City of Palm Springs Keep up with The PalmSprings Modernism Week i-Phone App available through iTunesits free

The popular architecture tours which often sell-out will now be offeredevery day from Saturday the 19th thru Sunday the 27th due to populardemand twice a day on weekends and once a day on week days

There will be several home tours two of them organized by ModernismWeek and others organized by neighborhood associations

There is a NEW Design Lecture Series with exciting subjects andspeakers

There is a VERY special event planned as our tribute to mid centuryfashion

What is Modernism Week Modernism Week the only such event in the country is an exciting 9-daycelebration of mid-century modern design architecture and culture Thisdesign aesthetic originated in the 1950s and 60s was typified by cleansimple lines and celebrated elegant informality which came to define desertmodernism

In the winter of 2006 following the success of both the MODERNISMSHOW which had started in 2001 and the annual symposium organized bythe ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN COUNCIL of the PALM SPRINGS ARTMUSEUM a few local design and architecture aficionados createdMODERNISM WEEK to showcase Palm Springs world-renowned mid-century modern architecture (A Palm Springs Modernism Week history inpdf format is available here)

Among the members of the initial steering committee were representativesfrom the PALM SPRINGS PRESERVATION FOUNDATION the PALMSPRINGS MODERN COMMITTEE the PALM SPRINGS HISTORICALSOCIETY the THE ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN COUNCIL of THEPALM SPRINGS ART MUSEUM

MODERNISM WEEK has expanded into a 10 day period filled with a varietyof events including architecture tours films lectures an architecturesymposium educational events as well as chic and fun parties in cool mid-century modern homes We will be celebrating our 6th Annual Palm SpringsModernism Week February 17-27 2011 We hope you will join us

The Palm Springs Modern Committee is a non-profit volunteer organizationdedicated to promoting and maintaining the heritage of modern architectureand design in Palm Springs and the entire Coachella Valley Our goal is tobe a meeting place for Palm Springs Modernists both residents andnonresidents with the ability to quickly mobilize support for urgentpreservation issues

Located downtown in an architecturally-significant E Stewart Williams-designed building the Palm Springs Art Museum features excitingexhibitions of contemporary Native American Western and Pre-Columbianart in spacious galleries It features two sculpture gardens stimulatinglectures and educational programs for all ages and offers diverseperformances at its Annenberg Theater

The Palm Springs Convention Center will host 75 noted national andinternational decorative and fine arts dealers presenting all designmovements of the 20th Century The event is scheduled for February 18-20 2011 A wide range of vintage 20th Century furniture and decorative artswill be presented and sold by 90 exhibitors many from the West Coast butsome who come from as far away as New York Philadelphia BostonDetroit Dallas Denver and Miami The show is produced by DolphinPromotions

History of Palm Springs Modernism Week

What is now an international event began with a simple idea to augment the two-day Modernism Show with more reasons to celebrate modernism

The Palm Springs Modernism Show was first showcased in 2001 It followed a history of Modernism shows around the country that had begun in New York City in 1985 Soon after the Miami Modernism Show followed in 1994 heralding the rediscovery of the cityrsquos Art Deco architecture in South Beach That discovery helped reinvent the city as a hot and trendy destination for architecture aficionados

Fueled most notably by national and international media a similar pattern emerged in Palm Springs Working with Dolphin Promotions Jacques Caussin who is now Board Chair of Modernism Week started the Palm Springs Modernism Show in 2001 and it has steadily grown in stature since in its inception Now in its 9th year the Palm Springs Modernism Show held at the Palm Springs Convention Center has become one of the countryrsquos premier marketplaces for national and international modernist decorative and fine arts

The Palm Springs Art Museum began hosting its popular annual architecture symposium and home tour in 1999 which helped spark the appreciation for Palm Springs architecture The Museumrsquos efforts to shine a light on the cityrsquos renowned mid-century modern architects such as E Stewart Williams Albert Frey John Porter Clark John Lautner Don Wexler and Bill Krisel among others continued to fan interest in the cityrsquos astonishing concentration of mid-century architecture

The growing interest in our mid-century modern architecture resulted in wide national and international media attention Initially much of the media reports centered on the remarkably exacting restoration of the Kaufmann House in Palm Springs Eventually the media discovered the Kaufmann House was only one of hundreds important and architecturally-significant structures in Palm Springs

While Palm Springs has long enjoyed worldwide fame as a celebrity haven and an international vacation destination it began attracting a new tourism niche for architecture buffs Its mid-century modern architecture squarely put Palm Springs on the map for cultural tourism as well as fun in the sun

The confluence of these factors helped create the ideal timing and climate for a week-long celebration of modernism in Palm Springs Thus in 2006 the first Palm Springs Modernism Week was born to promote and celebrate the ideals and culture of modernism Through the efforts of a steering committee of devoted community leaders comprised of the Architecture and Design Council of the Palm Springs Art Museum the Palm Springs Modern Committee the Palm Springs Preservation Foundation and the Palm Springs Historical Society they planned and implemented the first Modernism

Week following the Modernism Show It featured a week of lectures architecture tours films and glamorously ldquomodrdquo receptions

From its humble beginnings Modernism Week has continued to grow exponentially from a week to ten days of events As the variety and sophistication of events has continued to grow a greater number of people from around the globe are drawn to join us in this celebration which has fueled a robust ldquomod-tourismrdquo niche in Palm Springs People have been known to travel from Australia and Europe to participate in Modernism Week

Modernism Week has firmly established Palm Springs as the worldrsquos mecca of modernism resulting in public awareness that has helped preserve the distinctive architecture which has so prominently defined Palm Springsrsquo unique character
