XXth INTERNATIONAL HORTICULTURAL CONGRESS

The XXth International Horticultural Congress is to be held in Sydney, Australia, from 15th to 23rd August, 1978, under the aegis of the Inter- national Society for Horticultural Science and with the support of the Commonweal th and State Governments of Australia and the Australian horticultural industries.

The principal objective of the Congress is to facilitate the exchange of technical and scientific information in all spheres of horticultural ac- tivity. The Congress is open to all. It will cater for the interests of both technologists and scientists and will be attractive to practising horticul- turists, as well as extension and research workers,

The Congress will be centred at the University of Sydney, Australia's oldest university.

The eight sectional programmes will mostly operate concurrently and will comprise: interdisciplinary, postharvest horticulture, citrus, viticul- ture, temperate fruits, subtropical and tropical fruits, vegetables, and ornamental and amenity horticulture.

Pre- and post-Congress tours of horticultural and scenic interest taking in the various Australian States, New Zealand and Papua, New Guinea will be offered. One and two day mid-Congress tours in N.S.W. and Can- berra will also be available.

CONFERENCE ON MINERAL NUTRITION AND FRUIT QUALITY OF TEMPERATE ZONE FRUIT TREES

To be held in April 1979 in Canterbury, Gt. Britain

Scope: The symposium will deal with aspects of the mineral nutr i t ion of temperate tree fruits; including the roles of nutr ient elements. Although stone fruit will be covered, the main emphasis will be on pip fruits (apples and pears). The meeting will include the third meeting of the Bitter Pit Dis- cussion Group. There will be symposia with invited and contr ibuted papers, less formal colloquia on subjects of more specialized interest for detailed discussion and visits to places of related interest. The symposium will be limited to 150 participants.
