I cannot express how I am anticipating to welcoming you to our Diamond Anniversary meeting in February. Drs. Ariel Raigrodski and John Townsend have assembled a truly stupendous cast of world-class clinicians to appropriately celebrate our milestone. Look at the program and you will realize this is not a meeting you will want to miss! In 1951, I Love Lucy made its television debut, Bobby Thomson hits "The Shot Heard 'Round the World", The Twenty-second Amendment to the United States Constitution is ratified, The Catcher in the Rye is first published, and the American Academy of Crown and Bridge Prosthodontics is founded. There were four speakers in the first scientific meeting. Our founding members listened to John Kuratli, Portland; Oregon "Restoration of a Broken Down Vital Posterior Tooth for a Bridge Abutment."; Donald E. Smith, Los Angeles, California; "Bio-Engineering of the Pontic in Fixed Prosthesis.''; Richard L. Simpson, Richmond, Virginia; "Failures in Crown and Bridge Prosthesis."; and Morris Thompson, Beverly Hills, California; "A Standardized Hydrocolloid Technique for Crown and Bridge Prosthodontics." Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Wayne Campagni and his Historical Committee and our Webmaster, Dr. Julie Holloway, you can see this and other past program books on our website under “Meetings”-“Past Meetings” (http://www.fixedprosthodontics.org/Past_Meetings.html). Wayne has also agreed to present on the history of the Academy during the meeting. Much has changed in Dentistry as elsewhere since 1951. Unemployment was 3.3% in the US, the average family income was $3,700 per year, the average cost of a new house was $9,000 and a car $1,500; a gallon of gas was 19 cents and gold was under $35 an ounce. However, the goals and values of the membership of our Academy have changed little. We continue to provide our patients with outstanding fixed prosthodontics. The quality dentistry we deliver has given our patients restored function that serves for many, many years. I’d like to think there are gold restorations that were provided by our founding members for their younger patients that are still in function today. I’d like to think that some of the work we do today will be in place for the Academy’s 120th anniversary. The Annual Meeting is more than just the finest scientific meeting with the finest speakers. Thanks to the generosity of our corporate partners and exhibitors, we are able to enjoy the camaraderie of the social events and meals, listen to the Tylman Award winners and provide a sub-stantial subsidy for graduate student attendance. Many of the graduate students will be presenting table clinics. Dr. Flavio Rasetto and the Table Clinics Committee have selected 43 table clinics for your enjoyment and education. They would have included more, but, unfortunately, there is no more additional space. For many table clinic presenters, this will be their first presentation at a major international meeting. I certainly clearly remember my table clinic effort for the Academy. It was a long time ago, it was about a postceramic soldering technique and it included an 8mm movie which I may still have.

Dr. Alejandro Peregrina and the Exhibits Committee have worked tirelessly to try to ensure that all interested companies participate. We always receive very positive feedback from the exhibitors, but realize there are prosthodontic companies that are missing. If you have a connection with one of these companies, please contact Alex or one of the Board members so we can try to bring them in as an exhibitor or sponsor. The Exhibit Hall is a great way to find out about the latest innovations for our practice, so let’s try to make it as comprehensive as possible. There have been some changes in this year’s meeting. After much thought and consultation, the Thursday Members’ Business Meeting will no longer be preceded by a Dinner. Attendance at the business meeting has declined in recent years. Many members have told us that they were unable to attend this important event because they needed to spend the time with their family, guests or residents. It is hoped that this year’s format, conducting our business with a “wine and cheese” reception, will entice more members to attend. We have important decisions to make that will protect your academy during the next 60 years and your wisdom and input are needed. It is essential that every member registers her or his meeting attendance via the website. It is important that you take the time to plan out your meeting and check those sessions and events that you will be attending. This allows our Meeting Site Director, Dr. Jack Lipkin, to accurately plan out the meals and services needed for you and your guests. In the recent past, wasted food has been a considerable financial drain on the Academy. We have been literally throwing money away that could have been much better spent supporting our Academy’s mission. The other financial concern relates to the hotel room block. As Dr. Lipkin clearly explains, if we do not meet our room block we face a severe financial penalty. Please make your reservation at the Marriott through our website. Sometimes, slightly cheaper rates show up on the Internet. If you cancel your booking in the room block and rebook outside of it, you may save a few dollars, but the Academy will end up paying much more. Unfortunately this is the reality of convention hotel business and also applies to all other organizations. During our Diamond meeting, we will see what is possible with prosthodontic care today. We will acquire knowledge to enhance our practice and get a glimpse into prosthodontics’ future. And, of course, we will meet with old friends and make new ones. I can hardly wait! See you in Chicago!

The Diamond Jubilee 2011 Annual Meeting promises to be a memorable event. This year’s meeting will feature some changes that will hopefully enhance the meeting experience for our members and guests. The Thursday night member registration and busi-

ness meeting will begin with registration at 5:00 p.m. on the 4th floor in the Halsted foyer. At 6:00 p.m., the AAFP will be hosting an open bar with hors d’oeuvres until 6:30 p.m. (dinner will not be served during the business meeting). At 6:45 p.m., members will meet in the Mar-riott ballroom (located on the same floor, just off the Halsted foyer) for the annual business meeting. This meeting should take about an hour. In response to the desires of the member-ship, there will not be a Town Hall Meeting following the business meeting. At the conclusion of the business meeting, academy members will be able to connect with friends and col-leagues to enjoy dinner and entertainment at one of Chicago’s many excellent venues. Another change this year is the increase in the number of table clinics from 31 at the 2010 meeting to 43 table clinics for the 2011 meeting. The room size for this year’s table clinics has been downsized to provide a cozy atmosphere for this event. See you in February!

To All AAFP members and guests who are attending our 2011 meeting: Once again, we are looking forward to an outstanding scientific and social meeting in 2011. It is VERY IMPORTANT that all members and guests book their Marriott Hotel room via our website and link to the hotel. Our annual meeting hotel rate is excellent and competitive with other hotels of this caliber in the area. The AAFP has a room block, which has been guaranteed. If we do not fill our room quota, the Academy is charged for rooms not filled. In 2010, we had to pay close to $5,000.00 extra in order to fulfill our financial obligation to the hotel. If a member or guest books the hotel online, we do not get credit for it. There is at best a very small savings to that member; however, we will all pay the price; through penalties, for not attaining our room block, and ultimately, higher membership dues.

We look forward to seeing all of you in February in Chicago. Sincerely,

Jack Lipkin Meeting Director
