How do we guide studentseducational growth and success?

    Working with first generation

college students, how can we help

    them envision and build new

    identities as learners and

    emerging professionals?

How can ePortfolios help in theseefforts?

If advisors are given access to

student ePortfolios, advisors cangive students more relevant andmeaningful guidance, over andabove the course selectionadvising that is often the solefocus of an advising session.

    ePortfolios, as the virtual alter-

egos of students, can be used togenerate the kind of informationthat advisors can refer to beforeoffering guidance.

Advising is viewed as a way to connect

students to the campus and help them feelthat someone is looking out for them.

    (Kuh, Kinzie and Schuh, 2005, p. 14)*

The goal of advising through ePortfoliosshould be to replicate the intimacy of a face-

    to-face advisor-student relationship in the

    virtual realm.

In this more responsivedigital model, a move from

    procedural to a more

    personal and communal

    involvement in theadvising process is

    achieved.

    Greater proportions of

    students can be channeled

into active preparation for, participation in, and

    engagement with the

    advising process.

    How do

    ePortfolios make

    possible the leap

    to student

    success?

    As both process and product,

    ePortfolios enable the student

simultaneously to look back on her

    work, synthesizing learning and

carefully selecting artifacts toproduce a snapshot of these

    educational experiences, and prime

her to continue the dynamic process

    of self-reflection and life-long

    learning.

    My advisor should have

    access to my ePortfolio

    before our session.

I would have a well written

About Me page so that the

advisor knows a bit of my

    story.

  • 8/13/2019 Advising Through ePortfolios - A Giant Leap Towards Student Success

    9/17

I would have a goalstab where I wouldexplain my careergoals. This would

allow my advisor to gointo our meeting withan idea of what myplans are and he orshe would be better

    able to providemeaningful advice

  • 8/13/2019 Advising Through ePortfolios - A Giant Leap Towards Student Success

    10/17

I would have a courseprojects/work page where Ihave deposited an artifactfrom every course Ive taken

at LAGCC. This would allowthe advisor to learn aboutmy level of scholasticachievement.

    Gives advisors a starting

    My educational goal is to

    graduate from LaGuardia

community college in Fall 2013with an Accounting degree and

    then transfer to Baruch College.

It is a senior college of the City

University of New York system, the

    third largest university system in

the United States in terms of

    enrollment, and the largest

    business school in the United

    States.

In order for me to achieve this goal

I will have to work very hard on my

school work, and I will have to

    become a better student.

create drafts for scholarshipsand transfer essays.

    Transfer AdvisingStudents About Me Page

In my life, I have accomplished

many things that on the grand

scale of things wouldnt beconsidered monumental, but they

    have considerably influenced the

    path I am currently on.

The one that is most prominent is

obtaining my GED after years of

putting it off. I had to look within

myself to find qualities that I

    thought had been long buried

when I was a 19 year old student.

I had to be determined, assertive

and persevering. I had to maintain

a focus that I did not believe I was

capable of and these traits have

carried over to my current role as

    LAGCC student.

    Students Educational Goals Page

    During research projects in my

CEP class, I have come across a

career that would suit my skill set.

    This career [is] Industrial

    Organizational Psychologist.

    In this day where workplace

violence is on the rise, I believethat a career in this field would

allow me to play my part in

curbing this disturbing trend in our

    society.

What kinds of conversations could you have about

    transfer with this student?

    Students EducationGoals Page

I highly depend on financial aid,

and I was afraid of how I was

going to pay for college. When I

    entered LaGuardia and was

    accepted into theAccelerated

    Studies in Associate Programs

    (ASAP), college became a reality.

    My biggest barrier is support.

Being the first one in my family to

go to college is difficult. My family

expects a lot from me and they do

not know how the college path in

    the United States works.

    About Me Page

I want to work with urban-lower

    class-disenfranchised minority

    children and teenagers in an

    educational setting to provide

    them with the support and

resources that I did not have in

    school as a child.

This is why I am majoring in

    Language (Spanish and

    Portuguese) & Latin American

    Studies to better understand the

    Latino community in the US.

What kinds of conversations could you have about

    transfer with this student?

I would like to pursue a Masters

in Journalism and work as acorrespondent in Latin America

or as a US diplomat. Why do I

    aspire to fulfill these goals?

I am a renaissance man. I have apassion to learn the arts and

    sciences, and through them

learn about my role in society

and give back to my community.

If there were no barriers, I would

    without a doubt attend

    Middlebury College.

    I would experience life on

    campus and pursue a Bachelors

    degree in Latin American

    Studies and Spanish and

    Portuguese.

I would spend an academic year

abroad in Brazil and learn about

    the language, culture, literature,

    and arts.
