AP Course Revisions

• Traditional “content coverage” model of instruction to one that focuses on enduring, conceptual understandings and the content that supports them.

• This approach will enable learners to spend less time on factual recall and more time on inquiry-based learning of essential concepts.

CISD Opportunities

• AP English Language and AP English Literature made strides in the Spring of 2016 as they began to utilize the UbD templates to reorganize, reframe, and vertically align their curriculum.

• We continue to review and operationalize all the tools available in AP Potential to encourage learners to enroll in rigorous course work.

CISD AP Celebrations

• Senor Lee is piloting AP WE (embedded service learning) in his classes this year.• Kim Pearce, CHS AP Lead, was named an AP Mentor by the College Board.

Legislation to Watch

HB 1992 • Prohibits an institution of higher education

from requiring a score of more than 3 on an AP exam for granting course credit unless the institution’s chief academic officer determines, based on evidence, that a higher score is necessary to indicate that a learner is sufficiently prepared to be successful in a related, more advanced course

Questions for Consideration

• How do we continue to increase AP enrollment in some subject areas?

• What barriers exist that inhibit learners from taking AP courses?

• How can we encourage learners to take AP courses in their areas of interest?

• How can we continue to support our AP educators as their learner enrollment increases?

International BaccalaureateClass of 2016

IB Program Overview 2016

• 6 subject areas (Language A, Language B, Individuals and Societies, Experimental Sciences, Mathematics, The Arts)

• Subject Score Range: 1-7 (4 is a qualifying score)• Up to 3 bonus points for Extended Essay / Theory of

Knowledge course performance• Learners must earn 24 points and avoid any failing conditions to

earn the IB Diploma (Average of 4)• Learners complete assessments for 3 (or 4) subjects at higher

level (HL) and the remainder standard level (SL). • All HL and most SL subject are taught over 2 years

• Class of 2016 IB Diploma Rate: 83.3% (87% in 2015, 78% in 2014, 82% in 2013, 68% in 2012)

• Compares to US & Worldwide IB Diploma Rates

– US IB-66%– Worldwide IB-77%

• All learners in IB courses must complete the associated IB assessments in each of their six subjects

• IB Enrollment: 12th - 30, 11th – 70 (2015-2016)• *All learners in Honors courses at CHS receive IB preparatory

instruction.

IB Performance Rates

• Under HB5 – The IB Diploma is a pathway in the Multi-Disciplinary Endorsement

• The 5-Year IB Program Self-Assessment was completed in December 2015 and submitted to the IBO• Recommendations were received in the spring for

improving the programme• Theory of Knowledge (TOK) was offered in summer

school to provide greater flexibility to learners balancing IB Diploma requirements and extracurricular activities • This practice will be extinguished per IBO after this

summer
