The clip-clop of a mule-drawn carriage along a quiet cobblestone street is a familiar sound in the New Orleans French Quarter, adding to the city’s old world charm. The first cobblestone pavement in New Orleans was laid on Gravier and Magazine Streets in 1817, but the material was soon used on major thoroughfares throughout the city including Canal Street, where Coleman E. Adler & Sons has called home since 1898. Several theories exist as to the origin of cobblestone, they are suspected to have been used in the ballast of large European ships to enhance stability and the Cabildo, the governing body at the time, was able to obtain the material cheaply for paving the streets. Today, Adler’s captures the iconic cobblestone design that celebrates New Orleans' rich heritage with an exclusive collection of sterling silver designs.
