Methodology used within ABC Adventures
Analytic Phonics (Implicit Phonics)
• Analytical phonics refers to a teaching approach for reading, in which the phonemes associated with particular graphemes are not pronounced in isolation.
• Analytic phonics uses a range of clues to read a text.
• Children identify the common phoneme in a set of words in which each word contains the phoneme under study.
• Students analyze the first letter and sound of each word to learn the assigned phonetic meaning. For example, teacher and students discuss how the following words are alike: pat, park, push and pen.

Scaffolding
• Instructional scaffolding is the specific concepts and strategies students can learn through clear and supported examples.
• These supports may include the following:• Resources• A compelling task• Guidance on the development of cognitive and social skills
• These supports are gradually removed as students develop autonomous learning strategies.
Scaffolding
Total Physical Response (T.P.R.)
• The T.P.R. approach emphasizes the importance of listening for early language development and does not require spoken output in the early stages of learning.
• The listening and responding (with actions) serves two purposes: • To quickly recognize meaning in the language being learned• To passively learn the structure of the language itself
• T.P.R. is a valuable way to learn vocabulary and build fluency.
• This approach to listening is called codebreaking, because students are decoding input and associating meaning between their native language(L1) and their L2.
Total Physical Response (T.P.R.)
Multiple Intelligences (M.I)
• M.I. states that each individual possesses a unique blend of all the intelligences.
• The M.I. theory seeks to "empower learners," not restrict them to one modality of learning.
• Abilities set to meet this criteria:Musical – rhythmic Visual – spatialVerbal – linguistic Logical – mathematicalBodily – kinesthetic
• This set of skills makes it possible for a person to solve problems in life.
• M.I. aids in creating solutions for problems and knowledge gathering.
Multiple Intelligences (M.I.)
Informative Feedback
• Methods used to enable students to understand visually in ways that do not depend on language
• Students can move through games at their own pace, and receive immediate, informative feedback on each interactions.
• Students are motivated to solve problems
• Figuring things out makes for their own reward
• Students build a thirst for challenges and lifelong learning

Building a strong foundation in phonics is very important for learners.

• Unlike adults, however, kids do not know how to manage stress.

Compass Club ABC Adventures is an effective, exciting, fun three-book series for very young English language learners to learn and master the English alphabet and single letter phonics sounds.
Starter Book Learners develop the fundamental cognitive and motor skills necessary for learning the alphabet.
Books 1 and 2Students learn the alphabet by being introduced to four target words that start with the same letter, the name of the letter, its phonetic sound, and how to recognize, write, and say it.

Extension Activity: Whisper Bridge
Objective: Allow students to engage and improve their knowledge of vocabulary
Materials: One set of flashcards
1. Students form a line at one end of the room.
2. The teacher stands in the middle and holds up a flashcard.
3. Individually, each student comes to the teacher and whispers the target word into the teacher’s ear.
4. If the student is correct they may cross the “bridge,” to the other side of the room.
5. If not they must go back and try again.

Benefits: An an excellent use of informative feedback where students will not only learn their target vocabulary and phonetic recognition, they will also learn the necessary strategies needed for vocabulary acquisition.

• They color pictures that show the word and match them to a different picture of the same word.

Extension Activity: Memory
Objective: To have students recognize and say the target vocabulary
Materials: Flashcards
1. Have students play with a friend or on a team
2. Place two (2) sets of flashcards flat on the desk
3. Students can turn over only two cards at a time and they must say the target word on the card.
4. If the cards match, the student or team can keep that pair.
5. If they don’t match, the cards must be turned back over and the student/team is not awarded the cards.
6. The student or team with the most pairs at the end wins.

Benefits: Students will exercise their knowledge of vocabulary and speaking skills.
• This page helps students accurately learn how different lines and shapes are used to make capital and lowercase letters.
• Students first learn to see the way certain lines and shapes appear in different letters with a sticker activity.
• Students then practice making the shapes by tracing them in a picture that gives them context and meaning.

Objective: Puts the M.I. methodology into practice for developing target vocabulary and phonetic recognition
Materials: Flashcards
Extension Activity: Mime Game
Steps to Follow: 1. Have students sit on the floor
2. Explain that each student will be a mime. They are going to move and act out what is on a chosen flashcard, and they cannot make sounds or talk.
3. The other students need to guess the word on the flashcard based on the motions of the mime (student).
4. The student that guesses correctly, gets a point and then becomes the next mime.
• Students are able to see how to write capital and lowercase letters.
• Students practice writing the letter and coloring the pictures of some of the target words for each letter.
• Then students practice writing the letter on their own.

Extension Activity: Mime Dance
Objective: Puts the M.I. methodology into practice for developing target vocabulary and phonetic recognition
Materials: Hybrid CD
1. From the Hybrid CD, select an animated chant for your students
2. Ask the students to mimic and mime the shapes of the letters and target vocabulary words from the unit
3. This is especially effective when a target word is a verb
4. The teacher can create a unique dance of their own, or ask students to come up one. Then, ask students to mimic and mime your movements or the movements of one of their classmates.

Benefits: To provide students the opportunity to develop their motor and cognitive skills when acting out the shapes.
• Students practice the target words from the lesson in the context of a fun song that is coupled with a sticker activity. There’s also an original illustration that goes with each song.

Extension Activity: Clapping Master
Objective: To help students develop their motor skills and phonetic recognition for the target vocabulary
Materials: Flashcards
1. Students can sit in a circle with their teacher as they are shown.
2. The teacher shows a flashcard to a student and says the word.
3. The student must break the word down into syllables and say each syllable with a clap.
4. If they are correct, they get a point.
5. If they are wrong, discuss the mistake and move to the next student. Use the same word until someone gets it right.
6. Students can take over the role of the teacher in this game to reward correct answers or good behavior.

Benefits: Students will exercise their knowledge of vocabulary, motor, and counting skills.

• Students build logical reasoning and other cognitive skills by completing a variety of fun activities including: mazes, puzzles, stickers, coloring, and more.
• Students use the flashcards to study, play games, and customize their learning experience by choosing their favorite card from the lesson and adding it to their word poster.

Objective: To teach students how to recognize and say the target vocabulary
Materials: • Flashcards of target words• A piece of paper larger than the flashcards with a circle 2cm in
diameter removed from the center
1. Have a blank card with a hole and show only part of the target word flashcard.
2. Students raise their hands and try to guess the correct word.
3. Can be played individually or with teams.

Objective: Students will be required to increase their recognition speed for the multiple word blends.
Materials: • Construction paper• Glue or tape• Markers• Paint mixing stick or popsicle sticks
Step 1: On a single strip of paper have students write
the first letter to be used (i.e. S, A, R, etc.). Letters
should be no closer than 3 cm apart.
Step 2: On a separate piece of paper, students write
one partial word blend (i.e. ame).
Step 3: Take a paper towel roll, which should be cut
into three pieces for the use of three separate children.
Step 4: Students wrap the roll with decorative paper.
Step 5: Glue the partial word blend on the decorative
paper, close to the left side of the paper towel roll.
Step 6: Insert the strip of paper for students to create
the “Magic Word Wand.”

Step 7: Have students form teams and form two lines on
both sides of the classroom, each facing the other.
Step 8: The teacher will select a team to go first, naming
one team Gryffindor and the other Hufflepuff.
Step 9: The first team will say “Abracadabra!” and show
their Magic Word Wand with the letter and partial word
blend matched together.
Step 10: The opposing team’s player reads the word, if
they are correct, they can then challenge the next player
from the other team.
Step 11: The teams alternate players until every student
has had a chance to speak at least three times.
Step 12: The team with the most points is the winner.
They are now WIZARDS!

Step 1: Mark a McDonalds French fry carton with a family blend (e.g. igh)

Step 4: When the teacher says “Go!” , students race to match the correct popsicle sticks with the related carton
Step 5: The team that places all the popsicle sticks correctly in the cartons is the winner.
