Analytic Phonics (Implicit Phonics)

• Analytical phonics refers to a teaching approach for reading, in which the phonemes associated with particular graphemes are not pronounced in isolation.

• Analytic phonics uses a range of clues to read a text.

• Children identify the common phoneme in a set of words in which each word contains the phoneme under study.

• Students analyze the first letter and sound of each word to learn the assigned phonetic meaning. For example, teacher and students discuss how the following words are alike: pat, park, push and pen.

Scaffolding

• Instructional scaffolding is the specific concepts and strategies students can learn through clear and supported examples.

• These supports may include the following:• Resources• A compelling task• Guidance on the development of cognitive and social skills

• These supports are gradually removed as students develop autonomous learning strategies.

Total Physical Response (T.P.R.)

• The T.P.R. approach emphasizes the importance of listening for early language development and does not require spoken output in the early stages of learning.

• The listening and responding (with actions) serves two purposes: • To quickly recognize meaning in the language being learned• To passively learn the structure of the language itself

• T.P.R. is a valuable way to learn vocabulary and build fluency.

• This approach to listening is called codebreaking, because students are decoding input and associating meaning between their native language(L1) and their L2.

Multiple Intelligences (M.I)

• M.I. states that each individual possesses a unique blend of all the intelligences.

• The M.I. theory seeks to "empower learners," not restrict them to one modality of learning.

• Abilities set to meet this criteria:Musical – rhythmic Visual – spatialVerbal – linguistic Logical – mathematicalBodily – kinesthetic

• This set of skills makes it possible for a person to solve problems in life.

• M.I. aids in creating solutions for problems and knowledge gathering.

• Methods used to enable students to understand visually in ways that do not depend on language

• Students can move through games at their own pace, and receive immediate, informative feedback on each interactions.

• Just like adults, kids feel stress.

• What could be more stressful than

trying to do/learn something you’re not prepared for?

• Unlike adults, however, kids do not know how to manage stress.

• Even if a child doesn’t feel stressed, the lack of a good, strong foundation will disrupt their ability to properly learn.

Starter Book Learners develop the fundamental cognitive and motor skills necessary for learning the alphabet.

2. Place two (2) sets of flashcards flat on the desk

3. Students can turn over only two cards at a time and they must say the target word on the card.

4. If the cards match, the student or team can keep that pair.

5. If they don’t match, the cards must be turned back over and the student/team is not awarded the cards.

6. The student or team with the most pairs at the end wins.

Steps to Follow: 1. Have students sit on the floor

2. Explain that each student will be a mime. They are going to move and act out what is on a chosen flashcard, and they cannot make sounds or talk.

3. The other students need to guess the word on the flashcard based on the motions of the mime (student).

4. The student that guesses correctly, gets a point and then becomes the next mime.

• Students are able to see how to write capital and lowercase letters.

• Students practice writing the letter and coloring the pictures of some of the target words for each letter.

• Then students practice writing the letter on their own.

2. Ask the students to mimic and mime the shapes of the letters and target vocabulary words from the unit

3. This is especially effective when a target word is a verb

4. The teacher can create a unique dance of their own, or ask students to come up one. Then, ask students to mimic and mime your movements or the movements of one of their classmates.

6. Students can take over the role of the teacher in this game to reward correct answers or good behavior.

into three pieces for the use of three separate children.

Step 4: Students wrap the roll with decorative paper.

Step 5: Glue the partial word blend on the decorative

paper, close to the left side of the paper towel roll.

Step 6: Insert the strip of paper for students to create

the “Magic Word Wand.”

Have one student select a card from the set of flashcards

Step 3:

Students can challenge a classmate to find another word to rhyme with

If the student cannot complete the rhyme, they must sit down and have the next student in line finish where the rhyme chant has left off.
