One of the Oldest Books on Earth

- still answering

Today’s Big Questions

Begun about 3500 years ago and completed in about AD 90, the Bible is unique. No other book has predicted the future of the nations in general, and Israel in particular, with such astonishing accuracy and authority as the Bible, to the extent that we can virtually pinpoint where we are today in the unfolding of God’s plan for the Earth. Only the Bible clearly tells us how the current turmoil in the Middle East will end and how the perplexing problems of our day will be solved once and for all. Only the Bible really has the answers to today’s problems of oppression, global catastrophe, suffering and death.

Come to The Bible for Today exhibition and be amazed with what is contained in one of the oldest books on Earth.

Thetford and the KingJames Bible

As much of the English-speaking world is celebrating400 years of the King James Bible, you may wonder whywe link Thetford with this illustrious book. The connectionis King James himself. In 1603 the king stayed inThetford to enjoy some hunting in the area, lodging in hisregional palace, now known as the King's House. Thefollowing year the monarch held the Hampton CourtConference (in a somewhat grander palace) at which thedecision was taken to produce a new version of the Biblein an effort to satisfy and unite all factions within theestablished church.

The aim was not to create a completely new translation. The translators wrote "Truly, good Christian reader, we never thought from thebeginning that we should need to make a newtranslation, nor yet to make of a bad one a good one, butto make a good one better, or out of many good ones, one principal good one, not justly to be excepted against"- from The Translators to the Reader, the preface to the1611 King James Bible.

The greatest influence was that of William Tyndale, thefirst to translate and have printed the New Testamentfrom the Greek, and the Pentateuch and Jonah from theHebrew. John Wycliffe's prior translation had been fromthe Latin Vulgate, itself a translation from the originallanguages, and copies had been handwritten. Both menwere ambitious to have God's Word available toeveryone, not just the clergy, many of whom could notunderstand the language of the Latin texts they wereexpounding, but were relying on inserted translations ofvariable quality and were 'reading between the lines'.

The King James Bible has become a best-seller, and

continues to be so throughout the English-speakingworld, influencing the expressions we use in everydayspeech. Unfortunately, many copies sit on bookshelvesgathering dust and will never wear out with use. At thecoronation of British monarchs they are presented witha copy of the Bible, with these words"Our Gracious Queen (or King), we present you with thisBook, the most valuable thing that this world affords. Here is wisdom, this is the royal Law, these are the livelyOracles of God."Those volumes gathering dust show that not everybodyagrees with these words, and in many cases people havenot even opened the pages to see for themselves, norhave they realised how many lives were lost in the effortsto make God's Word available in our own tongue.

Much has been said this year praising the King JamesBible for its beautiful English and its memorable phrasesyet few have touched on the fact that the Bible itself, when accurately translated into any language, is God’smessage to mankind, revealing His plan for the world andanswering man’s most urgent questions. Sadly, manypeople, even Christians, fail to appreciate its content.

King James came to Thetford to hunt deer beforecommissioning his famous work. The Bible for TodayExhibition comes to Thetford to help those hunting forsolutions to the perplexing problems facing mankind. Itcan be seen in the Guildhall from Tuesday 20th toSaturday 24th September, 10.00 - 5.00 Tuesday toFriday, and 9.30 - 2.00 on Saturday.

Common Sense Clubis back in session

Come the Autumn; come the Common Sense Club.Thetford's lecture and discussion group, formed in thewake of the Tom Paine Bicentenary Celebrations, is backin session. The first of three meetings will be held onFriday 30th September in the Old School of ThetfordGrammar School. Did the great man practise what hepreached? Sheffield academic Laura Kirk's interest in thehistory of political ideas leads her to consider Paine'sindifference to female subordination, alongside the useby his contemporaries, Mary Wollstonecraft and theMarquis de Condorcet, of Paine's own politicalarguments to espouse women's emancipation.

The name 'Common Sense Club' deliberately echoes thatof the meetings of the Headstrong Club which Paine tookpart in as a young man in Lewes, Sussex. Similardiscussion groups, of all political persuasions, existedacross the country in the eighteenth century and AlanCardew returns to the Club on October 14th to talk aboutKit-Kats, Jacobins & Drones. His survey of Clubs andpolitics from 1688 to the present day will be every bit as

fascinating as it sounds.

Finally, adopting a format recommended by members lastyear, we end on Friday 4th November with a QuestionTime that will feature speakers from across the politicalspectrum. The former Norwich MP Ian Gibson and thesitting member for Cambridge, Liberal Julian Huppert, have already agreed to join the panel. Final listings in ournext.

Despite all this talk of clubs and members, themeetings are open to all, at no cost, with tickets at thedoor. However, to help us assess numbers for theorganisation of the night, you are invited to book inadvance by telephoning the Grammar School Office,01842 752840.

It is believed that a pre-historic trackway, known today as the Icknield Way, forded the rivers Thet and Little Ousewhere the Nuns' Bridges stand. Today, many centuries later it is still a very important river crossing. The pastphotograph was taken in the early years of the 20th century.

Your Health, Your Problem?

We wouldn’t be human if we didn’t dothings that we knew were harmful to our health. A burgerhere, cigarette there, or sneaky drink after work maymake us feel good at the time, but in the long run mayultimately cause us problems. As a GP I’m often askedfor help, a quick fix or a tablet to “make it all go away”,but I’m afraid to say for many health problems there isno quick fix.

When we’re young we feel immortal, and so develophabits which ultimately lead to health problems, but it’sonly as we age that we realise this. Youth is wasted onthe young, and hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Obesity, type II diabetes, heart disease, stroke, chronicobstructive pulmonary disease, and even types of cancercould arguably be caused by our lifestyles. People oftenpresent to their doctor in the hope of an instant cure, andoften when it’s too late. We can treat diseases, manageconditions, but when it comes to cure in the strictestsense of the word, that is more of a challenge. Life etchesitself indelibly upon us, and by definition it’s tolls aredifficult to erase. There is no pill for a better life.

So what can we do to change our health behaviour, todevelop good habits, and change our lives for the better?

Step 1: acknowledge you have a problem, and acceptthat it is YOUR PROBLEM;

Step 2: identify the barriers that prevent change, be theyfinancial, social, or environmental. Sometimes this mightinvolve making some difficult and painful decisions;

Step 3: educate yourself. Find out what it is you need todo to make the change, be it self help, or speaking tosomeone who might know e.g. health trainer, nurse, doctor, family, friend, priest…

Step 4: Break every big problem into smaller ones, writethem down, and cross off each problem when you’vesolved it;

Step 5: measure your success, be it weight lost, moneysaved by not buying cigarettes, lower cholesterol etc.

I can’t profess to having the recipe for success, butacknowledging we have room for improvement, byobtaining an internal locus of control, we can begin tomake real changes for the better.

Page 16: About Thetford

As many of our regular visitors are already aware theTourist Information Centre has moved into BelmontHouse, 20 King Street, Thetford (opposite Greggs) and isnow part of the Community Interest Company LeapingHare. The location has enabled us the increased spaceto offer a number of new services namely thedevelopment and sale of a range of Thetford giftware, inaddition to those sold on behalf of the Dad’s Army &Charles Burrell Museums. We also stock a number oflocally themed books, which have proved very popularwith visitors and residents alike.

The normal service of National Express Coach bookingsstill exists, as well as acting as local agents for CoachServices, Chenery Travel & Easton Coaches that provideday excursions from Thetford.

Recently we have been promoting and selling tickets forthe Thetford Festival, and also have the Heritage OpenDays brochure for those who are interested in gainingaccess to some of our Heritage buildings that might notnormally be accessible, namely Riversdale, ThetfordGrammar (Old School Room), King’s House, as well asour usual attractions Charles Burrell Museum , Dad’sArmy Museum and Ancient House Museum. There willalso be two guided walks by local historian DavidOsborne which will take place on Saturday 10thSeptember at 10:30am & 1:30pm, for more informationabout these and the heritage open days contact David01842 751975 or call into the TiC and pick up abrochure.

The tourist information service is still provided voluntarilyand has been so since the Town & District Councils cutthe service in March 2008. We have continued to deliverand indeed improve the service with additional openinghours because we passionately believe that Thetford hasa fantastic History & Heritage. It attracts a huge numberof visitors a year, some 9,500 will pass through the doorsof the TiC this year which is testimony to that passion.

However in addition to the town’s visitors we feel weprovide a very important service to local residents. TheTiC has become a key source of information, fieldingquestions such as local bus timetables, signposting toother local groups and organisations such as the CAB,local sports clubs and community groups. This hasenabled us to build a solid support to many who havebegun to rely on us. Please try and support the serviceswe do offer, and for those that regularly do we thank you.

Gardeners & AllotmentHolders of Thetford

Hi gardeners! September is the onset of autumn, so let’s hope we haveall the potatoes dug up and put in a dark place. It shouldbe somewhere frost free, so they go through the winter.

This is the time that growing plants are slowing down,so we can slow down a bit ourselves. The summerannuals are going over, but the autumn flowering shrubsand perennials are coming into their own, and showingoff their autumn colours.

There is plenty of tidying up to do, but be careful in theflowerbeds, as the autumn bulbs are shooting up. Fromnow on you can start to prepare the soil for next year. Didwe say a little respite? There is always something positiveand constructive to do in your garden.

Over the allotment pick apples, pears, and plums as theyripen. Harvest sweetcorn as it ripens too. There is nothingbetter than putting 2 cobs of corn straight in the pot tocook and then on to the plate with a knob of butter, yummy! I have harvested some lovely cauliflowers thisyear, with plenty of broccoli and calabrese, the greyhoundcabbages have grown really big too. The weather wasnot too good at the beginning of the year, but even therunner beans, which were slow to start, are now givingof their best.

Last month Terry Walton of the official allotment in theRhonda Valley for Radio 2’s Jeremy Vine show came togive us a talk, but before he did that, he spent some time

with our President Maureen and John Lister, andchairman Rachel and David Woods. Then to my delightTerry and his wife Anthea came to see my allotment. Hegave me some good advice about some of the things onmy allotment. This has made my year! I follow Terry ongardenersclick.com and in the Gardening News.

Well that's all for this month, but if I can help in anyway with gardening hints, pleasedon't hesitate to contact me [email protected] or01842760244 or 07867974544.Bye for now until next month! Yvonne.

Gardening with Old GrandadHi boys and girls, The best part about growingvegetables is eating them. Now is the time to harvestyour crops, onions, shallots and garlic should be lifted, dried out, and tied in bunches, these can then be hungup in a frost free shed for use over the winter.

You can freeze a lot of the vegetables, peas, broadbeans, french beans and runner beans can all go in thefreezer. Remove the peas from the pods and fill freezerbags with enough peas for a family serving, the samecan be done with broad beans.

French beans and runner beans need to be sliced butI think this a job for an adult, but you can help to putthe beans in the bag.

Carrots can be left in the ground and pulled whenneeded, so can beetroot, cabbages, lettuce and radish.

Abby and Coner have been very hard at work gettingtheir crops in, and I have been told Abby will be doingthe same again next year at her Nans new house andConer will be on his patch again next year. That's allfor now so stay safe and next month we will be showing

some photographs of the children’s section in theannual produce show. Be good and stay safe old Grandad .

ThrillingYoung voices building as the fifty-strong singersprocessed into the hall. High. Plangent. “Wonder andmystery be to this place”. A spine-tingling opening to theChills and Thrills concert which rounded off ThetfordVoices’ fifth Summer Workshop for 6-16 year olds lastmonth.

It was not all to be so ethereal as the record number ofparticipants explored their dramatic theme; as theenergy, commitment and enthusiasm of two days hardbut enjoyable rehearsal spilled into the song and danceof ‘Zombie Mambo’ and ‘Monster Mash’.

Song leaders Laura Miller and Christopher Wray (back inThetford after a charismatic tenure as Director of theThetford Singers) fashioned accomplished performancesof John Rutter’s ‘Magical Kingdom’ and the spiritual‘Dem Bones’ as the group divided on age lines. In themain, however, it was all ages working successfullytogether, in unison and harmony, to conjure up RLS’seerie horseman, galloping through ‘Windy Nights‘, andrecreate the awful excitement of riding Roller Coaster and

Ghost Train (‘Roller Ghoster’). There was even a foray intolight opera - Chris as Sir Roderic Murgatroyd (from Gilbertand Sullivan’s Ruddigore) ably abetted by a choir ofSpectral Ancestors in telling us what dark pleasures canbe enjoyed ‘When the Night Wind Howls’.

For one young participant ‘it could have been morescary!’ but for the audience of a hundred parents andfriends in the Grammar School’s Williamson Hall it wasthe Frankenstein Effect: out into the world again withbatteries recharged.

The Workshop wasgenerouslysponsored byBreckland Counciland the D’Oyly CarteTrust.A Retiring Collectionin aid of EACH raised£143.98The next ThetfordVoices event is ourChristmas Carollingon 20th & 21stDecember.

Recruiting young peoplewho want to make a

differenceBreckland Youth Council is up and running and looking toattract more young people keen on improving the lives ofother youngsters in the district. Some of the existingyouth councillors are leaving to further their education, many of them outside of the district.

Youth councils give young people the opportunity to havetheir voice heard, have an impact on making decisions, make improvements in their area and meet likemindedyoungsters.

Since the formation of the Breckland Youth Council inFebruary 2009, the group has achieved a great dealwithin the district. It has awarded £20,000 to youngpeople in Breckland for youth projects and supporteddistrict council members by giving its opinion on decisionsthat affect young people in Breckland. Last November itlaunched its first campaign to tackle stereotypes that existbetween different generations.

Youth Council Chairman Stuart Green was elected thisyear as a district councillor for Dereham - Humbletoft, making him the youngest district councillor in the country!

Cllr Stuart Green said; ”I was able to put myself up forthe challenge of standing for election thanks to the timeI’ve spent as a Youth Councillor. It has helped me toovercome my shyness and confidence issues and Ibelieve passionately that young people do have a voiceand need to be represented.”

To get involved with the youth council, find out additionalinformation or request an application pack please contactSteph Barnard 01362 656870. Deadline for applications30th September 2011.

Just fake It!Here we are rolling fast into September! Where hasthe year gone?

I always think it’s important to keep updating andlearning about new treatments and products, especiallyingredients as they change and improve so rapidly.

Some treatments come onto the market and are reallymore of a fad or trend, one such example is the fishthat eat your dead skin! That’s all very well but it’s notreally going to replace a pedicure as the fish can onlyeat a certain amount of skin, they can’t cut the nailsand paint them! As with all things I think it will be justa trend and something interesting for people to try.

I recently tried out a different spray tan and was reallyimpressed with the results and how long it lasted. It’scalled a Sienna x and comes in 6 different shades andis really natural looking. Unlike traditional fake tanswhich normally smell like a fake tan this one smeltgreat and dries really fast. It contains natural, organicingredients to condition, tone, and care for the skin andis alcohol and parabens free (they are preservatives).

It is a British made product and has won numerousawards, also it has been featured on how to look goodnaked. I liked it so much we have replaced our existingspray tan and now offer the Sienna x in our salon.

‘Fallen Stars’ land in TA6‘Songs were sung about them, prayers whisperedfor them, sacrifices offered to them; they wereGods.’

Last week a group of seven students from across TheThetford Academy became the first ever to produce andperform an original play that was created entirely by themas part of several qualifications including a Gold ArtsAward. Overseen by Arts Award Advisor Helen Thomas-Jones, the production team consisted of Co DirectorsDemi O’Shea and Patricia Monarca, and Writer LauraRae; Year 13 Performing Arts students from the SixthForm Theatre Company; 6th Sense. The cast was madeup of four students; Rachel Twelftree (Year 14) and JoeHandley (Year 13) also from 6th Sense and Ellie Giles(Year 10) and Lacey Timlin (Year 11) Drama students fromacross both sites of The Thetford Academy. Cast membersauditioned for their roles and then began their journey.

The play titled “Fallen Stars” follows typical teenager Evie(Rachel) as she is pursued by two strange men convincedthat she is the Stars that disappeared from the skies 18years ago, causing what was known as ‘The Black SkyCrisis’. The men visit her at different times; Hyatus (Joe)a student in Evie’s physics class harasses and stalks herduring the day and Kianay (Ellie) the kinder and gentlerof the two visits her whilst she sleeps at night. They revealtheir true identities as the Sun and the Moon and confessthat they are both in love with the Stars and are bothtrying to win her back. Evie must choose between theSun who banished her out of jealousy and the Moon herlong lost love whilst battling with the decision to acceptor reject the revelation. The script was written as part ofLaura’s BTEC unit in Scriptwriting in April, and given toGold Arts Award students Demi and Patricia to direct. Toattain the Gold Arts Award qualification candidates mustshow arts leadership; in the girl’s case they had to direct, market and oversee the whole production process. Demi& Patricia have been working through their Arts Challengeas Directors and Arts Leadership as Event Organisers.

The play was performed to an audience of 40 friends, family, staff and students in the South Site drama studioon Thursday 14th July at The Thetford Academy.

The night was a huge success and rave reviews werereceived.
