ABOUT LIFE COACHING

Mums – Are You Looking to Return to Work?

Are you a Mum who is thinking ofreturning to work? Have you taken a briefMaternity leave or have you been a ‘stay athome’ Mum for several years? For someMums the mere thought of re-entering thework place can be a daunting experience,no matter how short the period ofabsence. The thought of having to preparefor interviews can bring back dreadedmemories similar to that of sitting theLeaving Certificate - the stuff ofnightmares!

In order to prepare for the inevitable here aresome questions you might want to askyourself - in no particular order:Are you planning on returning to the sameemployer?Do you want to work in the same profession?Do you need to upgrade your skills? Are you worried about the gap in your CV?Have you been putting off deciding when toreturn to work for ages? Are you lacking in confidence or has your self-esteem hit rock bottom? Are you dreading the day you willË have togo for an interview?Do you feel you need to prepare for this butyou don’t know where to start?

Building your confidence is crucial beforeeven considering applying for a job. You wantto be able to put you best foot forward andlet your future employer see that you aremore than capable of juggling bringing up afamily with holding down a career regardlessof whether you are working full or part-time.Remember you only get one chance to makea first impression.

Preparation is the key. You know the oldadage ‘If you fail to plan, you plan to fail’.Here are some tips on how to get started.Firstly take some time out to decide whatexactly it is you want to do. Once you havedecided that you can work on the rest. Setout a plan of action. Make a list of all thethings that will be necessary to put in place inorder for you to go back to work.

If you are finding this difficult and feel youwould like some assistance then perhapstaking part in one of our workshops mightjustr be the thing for you. If you would preferto work singularly then we can set up some1-2-1 appointments.

At Alive and Kicking Life and BusinessCoaching we run regular One Day Trainingson topics such as: "Personal Developement","How to Overcome Fear of Flying", and "Learnhow to Reduce Stress". Based in MainStreet, Dundrum, we limit the numbers to amaximum of twelve people. On Saturday5th September the Training is specificallygeared to preparing Mums for their Return to Work.

ABOUT FINANCES

Tax Return TimeIt’s that time of year again where 2008Income Tax returns have to be filed withthe Revenue Commissioners by 31stOctober 2009. Any income tax due for2008 has to be paid over by that date aswell.

Since we are now under the self-assessment systemit is each taxpayer’s responsibility to insure that thisdeadline is met. For self-employed people accountshave to be prepared and results submitted as partof the Return of Income declaration.

As a lot of emphasis is placed on the declaration ofincome and payment to the RevenueCommissioners of outstanding tax most self-employed people are aware of the responsibilitiesand obligations to be met by this deadline. Butthere are a large number of people who are notaware there is unclaimed money which belongs tothem. Tax credits are not being claimed and peopleare losing out by simply not filling in andsubmitting a form. Outlined below are just samples of the taxcredits which are not being used.

Home Carer AllowanceStay at home married parents are entitled to anallowance of €900 in 2008

Medical ExpensesTax relief can be claimed on certain medicalexpenses incurred in 2008

Rent Tax ReliefAn individual, paying for private rented accommo-dation can claim tax relief on the rent paid at thestandard rate of income tax subject to certainconditions.

Service ChargesService charges paid in 2007 qualify for tax relief in2008.

Trade Union subscriptionsTrade union subscriptions to a maximum of €300qualify for income tax relief.Taxpayers may qualifyfor personal tax credits which they are not aware of.There are also certain schemes in place such as

Rent-a-room relief and Childcare services schemes. It is necessary for the taxpayer to claim theseallowances and reliefs. It is not done automatically.Filling in a Return of Income form is one way ofdoing this. Contacting the Revenue is anotherpossibility. They have a very good online site atwww.revenue.ie which has extensive information onall tax allowances and reliefs with contact details toget in touch with them. If form filling or talking tothe Revenue seems too daunting then employingan accountant is another option. They are expertsin this field and even a simple chat with anaccountant may save you money.

Do not assume that you are receiving everythingyou are entitled to. This is money that could be dueto you but only you can ensure that it is gets intoyour pocket and not remain unclaimed in the handsof the taxman.

ABOUT LOCAL BUSINESS

Effective Debt Collection - A Must in Today’s Environment

The following are a list of 10 tips tofollow to help you collect your debts: -

1. Check your terms and conditions of business.2.Make sure you confirm an order for a supply ofgoods / services in writing. You should send a salesorder form which should incorporate your terms ofbusiness (usually on the back of the form). When asolicitor is instructed on debt collection matters theywill seek evidence of the “contract” i.e. order form, invoices etc.3. Make sure you know who you are doingbusiness with i.e. is it a Company or an individual.Get details of the correct address.4. If you are dealing with a Company try and get apersonal guarantee, in writing, from a Director. Thismay not always be possible.5. Review your credit control system. Are yousending regular reminders?6.Make it clear that you cannot continue to dobusiness with a creditor until some / all of theexisting debts are paid. It is worth noting that sincethe introduction of the Late Payments inCommercial Transaction Regulations in 2002,penalty interest applies if payments for commercialtransactions are not met within 30 days, unless theagreement between the parties specifies otherwise. 7. Check out the creditworthiness of a newcustomer. A simple, inexpensive way to vetCompanies is by checking their status on theCompanies Registration Office website regularly andnot only when the Company first purchases goods. If you require more up-to-date information you cancarry out a full Company search. We can assist youin this.8. As soon as it becomes clear that the debt isunlikely to be paid i.e. calls not being returned, theninstruct a solicitor to issue a 10 day demand letter.9. Don’t instruct your solicitor to write a demandletter unless you are prepared to proceed withCourt proceedings immediately. If you do issueproceedings it will show you are taking the matterseriously and are not going away.

10. Once judgement is obtained it may beenforced in a variety of ways. In some instances itmay be enforced by a sheriff who may seize goodsof the debtor. Alternatively, a judgement against aproperty owned by the debtor can be registeredwhich means that if the debtor wishes to sell theproperty you must be repaid before they can do so.

We have set up a customised Debt CollectionDepartment in our office which uses a unique“case steps” process to ensure that all cases aremanaged proactively and efficiently. If you haveany debt collection matters that we might beable to help you with do not hesitate to contactPauline Horkan or Barbara Sherry on 01-2960666 or [email protected] /[email protected]

ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS

Finding Time for RomanceFinding time for romance often proves tobe difficult if not impossible for mostpeople these days. Hectic work schedules, household chores, taking care of yourchildren’s endless demands usually leaveyou exhausted at the end of a long week.

When you are juggling a busy lifestyle and arelationship, finding time to keep the candles(never mind the fires) of romance burningcan be a huge struggle. But it doesn’t have tobe. If you’re trying to regain some time forthe love that you have, following these simplesteps below should make your struggle toregain romance a whole lot easier. If yourrelationship is a priority to you, then youshould be giving it all the attention it needs.

= Create your own simple rituals that showyou care for each other, such as leavingnotes, a phone call or emailing each day.

= Listen without giving advice, takingresponsibility, or trying to "fix" things. Letyour mate enjoy the luxury of knowing thatyou are really listening, only giving feedbackwhen asked.

= Talk to each other about what's going onin your lives besides the day-to-day runningof the household or office talk.

= Turn off the TV for 15 minutes every nightto talk and check in with each other.

= Instead of the standard, "How was yourday?" exchange, pick at least one good thingabout your day and share it with each other.

= Date at unusual times - make breakfastdates and brunch dates or meet each otherfor drinks after work. You can keep the datesshort.

= Hire help - Hire a babysitter or someoneto cut the lawn and use the time to do thingstogether.

= Give each other a kiss when coming andgoing. Give plenty of hugs and try to laughtogether.

= Plan a regular "date" night once a weekand stick to it

= Make a “love list”-write out ten things youwould like your partner to do for you eachmonth, neck massages, foot rubs etc, (smallthings that don’t take a huge amount oftime) and commit to doing at least two aweek.

It is very easy to drift apart from each other. You need to validate each other’s experiencesand make time for your partner, howeverdifficult this is. Make lists of what you have todo during the week, see what can be deferredor delegated and use this time as quality timewith each other.

ABOUT CHILDREN - DIFFICULT EATERS

Eat Your Greens!

Healthy eating for children is one of themost important parenting topics, butwhat do you do if your child is a fussy ordifficult eater?

Mum, Hollie Smith shares her top tips fromher book, ‘Dealing with Difficult Eaters: Stopmealtimes becoming a battleground withfussy children’, co-written with Dr. SandiMann and Sally Child.

1. Be CoolEasier said than done, admittedly, but it’s truethat attitude is everything when it comes tofeeding children.Never let them see that their food issues areupsetting you – in some cases it will simplymake things worse.

2. Be ResilentWhether you’re trying to expand the limitedfood horizons of a fussy eater, or overhaul thehabits of a child with a weight problem, you’ll need to be consistent, firm andresolute.

3. Be A FoodieGet them in the kitchen, cooking their ownfood, and in the garden, growing it. Takethem shopping, let them choose, allow themto prepare meals and snacks. Experiment, trysomething different every so often.

4. Be A Good Eater YourselfSit at the table with them, eat your greens, keep your treat intake limited. You are theforemost influence on your children, in eatingand everything else.

5. Be CarefulDon’t offer food as a bribe or reward, however desperate you get, and keep praiselow-key. Be sure not to ‘label’ them – youmay well have a difficult eater on your hands, but don’t call them one to their face.

6. Be SensitiveWatch out for the difficult eater with anunderlying emotional need, and always treatthe issue with care and understanding.

7. Be Well InformedDo your homework so you know what thebasics of nutrition are – that way, you’ll knowoff the top of your head what healthyalternatives you can offer a child who isasking for junk food. There are many differentfoods out there… it’s just a matter ofdiscovering them all.

8. Be UnitedGet everyone else involved on your side. There’s not much point in dealing with adifficult eater one way, if someone else isdealing with it a different way.

9. Be ReasonableMaybe your little difficult eater just doesn’tlike certain foods, or maybe they have aperfectly understandable preference for whitebread. Why not? A child should never bemade to eat anything.

10. Be ModerateDon’t fret or obsess about food – apart fromdriving yourself insane, you may have theopposite effect to the one you were hopingfor. What our kids eat is, and should be,something to care about and be concernedabout. It’s all about balance.

You can get your hands on a copy of Hollie's book at www.amazon.com.

Round the Garden in September

September brings a definite shift in the feel ofthe garden. The colour palette changes to a‘dryer' one with golden yellows, deeporanges, and glowing reds.

A few plants suddenly shout for attentioncoming to the fore for the first time, but morestart to prepare themselves for the colder timesahead.Ornamental grasses lead the way, with many‘flowering' over the coming weeks.Of theperennials, of particular interest are Heuchera,Agapanthus, and Helenium (sunflower). All offerflower in the early September garden, with thesunflower providing the additional benefits ofexcellent height and structure and wonderfulseed-heads.Elsewhere, interest is provided by fruiting plants.A September star plant is Callicarpa bodinieri‘Profusion'. It's an unusual shrub grown for the

rich magenta colour of its plentiful berries which, whilst it does little of interest for a good part ofthe year, screams and shouts just when thegarden needs a burst of something new. Finally, the garden centres will start to stockspring bulbs at this time of year, and it reallypays to buy these now while they are fresh.Toomany people seem to put off buying their bulbsuntil later in the season, but think about buyingthem now and take advantage of the better (andfresher) selections available.

In the world of the internet, new languagearrives all the time and in a matter ofweeks you don't have a clue what peopleare talking about. Terms such as RSS,blogs, twitter, podcasting and phishingmay not be everyday conversation ‘downthe pub' but you'll hear it in the news, andsee it on websites.

Whilst a general internet search will showup text trying its best to describe thesetechnologies, www.commoncraft.com doesan excellent job of explaining all this withshort cartoon-like videos. The site does alsoinclude a couple of videos on less obvioussubjects like the benefits of using energysaving lightbulbs and electing a USpresident. There are only a small selection of videos atthe moment (they are a husband and wifesmall company), but the site is well worthbookmarking as more are sure to bepublished over time.

ABOUT EYE CARE

Looking After The Windows to Your Soul!

It's said that the eyes are the windows toyour soul, yet they are also a window toyour health. A visit to your local optician isabout preventing future problems as wellas checking your eyesight. An eye test ismore than just reading the letters on theboard. As well as checking your ability tosee correctly, your optician can also gaugethe general health of your eyes and canspot early clues to other problems such asdiabetes or high blood pressure. First signsof eye problems such as glaucoma andcataracts can be noted and dealt with.

You only have one pair of eyes during yourlife so they need to be looked after carefully.Regular eye checks are essential and it'srecommended that you have an eye testevery two years unless your opticianrecommends a different time-frame. It's alsosuggested that all children and people overthe age of 70 have an annual eye test.

Contact lenses wearers should attend regularafter-care check-ups to ensure your lensesremain comfortable and are not damagingyour eyes in any way.

Did you know that all Medical Card Holdersare entitled to a FREE eye test and FREEglasses. Those paying PRSI can also qualifyunder the Treatment Benefit Scheme. Forfurther information contact your localoptician or see www.welfare.ie

Some self-help tips for keeping your eyeshealthy are:• Have your eyes tested regularly• Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables

• Protect your eyes from the sun. In brightweather wear good quality sunglasses thatcarry the UV 400 mark. Over exposure toultraviolet rays can cause problems such ascataracts. • Stop smoking. Smokers are up to threetimes more likely to develop cataracts thannon-smokers.

• If you work on a PC, take short, frequentbreaks to prevent eyestrain and tiredness. An‘eye-break' will help which is when you focuson objects further away than the computerscreen.• If you play a lot of sport, consider buyingsports goggles to protect your eyes. • Eye injuries caused by home DIY arecommon so always wear safety goggles toprotect your eyes from flying splinters orshards of metal.

Finally, if you notice any changes in yourvision, experience pain in or around your eyesor if you keep getting headaches, then bookan appointment to see your optician as soonas possible.

ABOUT STYLE

Personal Style De-MystifiedI was reflecting over the summer on whatthe recurring questions and issues werethat I help clients with during thewardrobe de-cluttering and personalshopping times we have. Often it’s thepersonal style issue that concerns us mostwith the following questions coming upregularly:

=Do I have a personal style and what is it?=How do I identify it? =How can I be age appropriate now that

I’ve had that significant birthday?=I used to know what suited me but feel

that I’ve lost my way somehow.

It is easy to become confused betweenfashion and style, however personal style isnot about following fashion – it’s aboutunderstanding what works for you, your bodyshape, your lifestyle, and how to expressyourself effortlessly and comfortably bywearing your clothes confidently.

We are surrounded by images of stick-thinmodels wearing clothes that wouldn’t suit thelifestyle of most of the women who look atthem. Finding out how to sift through thenew season’s fashion to find the pieces thatsuit and fit you can be a daunting task foreven the most dedicated shopper and I knowthat for many of us that is just too much likehard work: we don’t know where to begin orwhat to look for.

When you understand what your personalstyle is the hunt for the correct itemsbecomes easier. Understanding what trends inthe current fashion won’t suit you andinterpreting the parts that will leaves you freeto be selective and confident. On Tuesday the 29th of September I shall behosting a personal style night, courtesy of

Helena, in the Giddy Studios (above theshops) on Grange Road at Marley Park. Wewill consider the above questions and look atthe importance of: body shape, clothingpersonality, colour, capsule wardrobe andusing accessories to change outfits. Theevening will begin at 7.30pm with a glass ofwine and finish around 9.30 pm with tea/coffee. The cost is €20 per person.

If you are interested in attending please letme know by text (0868067702) or e-mail([email protected]) as places arelimited. This should be a fun night ladies –let’s de-mystify the style issue once and forall!

Can Spirituality Change Anything?

The times we find ourselves living in are asconfusing and uncertain as has ever been inrecent history. Most of us cannot even dependon the security of employment, or for many evenlook to the prospect of securing a chosenproperty to live in.

Where to look for solace, protection and guidance? The answer lies in looking inside ourselves andconnecting to the higher power of the heavens.True! The power of prayer is immeasurable inassisting us in all aspects of our daily lives. To knowthat we are at one with the heavens and are notalone can give us the most wonderful sense of hopeand a power over our own destiny.

Yes, spirituality can change everything. When youallow yourself become fully aware of the uncondi-tional love that heaven has for you, you alsobecome extremely aware of the needs of others, thereby opening up to the more charitable side ofyour individual nature. A sense of being at one withthe universe of pure light and love, empowers thewill, which lead to the actions which ultimately

bring peace and harmony, wealth and success toyour daily life.

Being spiritual is not necessarily all about speakingthe words of prayer, rather enacting in a spiritualway the true concept of spirituality. Much can beuniversally changed when we put heavenly lightinto dark places and situations. Putting light into anenemy kills the darkness which may have beenintended to hurt you.

Angelic love and assistance is just a thought away,

irrespective of race or creed, so give it a try and see the

results of your prayer. Be very specific in what you ask for

and be unselfish with your requests, remembering to

include others, known and unknown.
