A MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER

FATHER’S DAY

To all the members of our College community who are fathers and to all the fathers of the

members of our College community, we wish you a Happy Father’s Day. We are blessed that

God provides us with a model of a loving and caring Father, always there to love, support and

guide us, to discipline us when appropriate but always willing to forgive us and grant us

eternal life through His Son, Jesus Christ.

Spring Fair

“As it is, there are many parts, but one body.” 1 Cor 12-20

Saturday, 28 August 2010, was a day in which the Macarthur community witnessed what a special place Broughton

is. The Spring Fair allowed the College to showcase how God has blessed us with talented students, committed

staff, a supportive parent body and marvellous facilities. The many hours of planning, working with the College

and the local community, setting up and working in many roles paid off on the day. The final tally of the monies

raised for the College is presently being calculated by our Parents and Friends Association, however, the total

‘profit’ gained in the development of College spirit and reputation is not possible to be calculated.

On behalf of all members of the College community, I thank all who were involved in the planning, the setting up

and the various activities on the day. The Macarthur community was able to see what makes the Broughton

community so special and how the parent body, the students and the staff work together to achieve great things.

TOURNAMENT OF MINDS

Last Sunday, thirty of our students represented the College at the Tournament of the Minds Competition held at

the University of Western Sydney. Over the past two months, the students have worked in three teams to prepare

their presentations in the Language and Literature, Maths and Engineering and Social Sciences competitions. Each

of the teams are congratulated for their work in preparing for the competition and for their outstanding

presentations. The members of the Language and Literature and the Maths and Engineering teams were excited to

be awarded ‘Honours’ in their competition and the Social Sciences team are commended for their presentation.

The College is blessed to have such talented students who are willing to take on the challenges and to show their

commitment to be extended beyond their comfort zone. The students have asked that I pass on their thanks to

Mrs Irwin, Mr Main, Mrs Hawkins and Mr Groth for their support and encouragement and for being willing to give

their time to allow the students to be involved in such events.

NASSA JUNIOR SCHOOL ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Congratulations to the team who represented the College at the NASSA Junior Athletics Carnival on Tuesday 31

August 2010. The College is proud of your achievements. A number of students have been selected to go to CIS

and a full report on the Carnival will be printed in a later newsletter.

YEAR 12 – MUSIC AND VISUAL ARTS EVENING

Congratulations to our Year 12 Music and Visual Arts students for their outstanding performances and

presentations at our Music and Visual Arts Evening held on Tuesday 31 August 2010. The quality of Visual Arts

works reflected the commitment of the students and Mrs Hawker, as well as giving us an insight into the final body

of works to be presented to the Board of Studies for the Higher School Certificate. The evening was an excellent

opportunity for our Music students to perform their HSC pieces to the audience. We wish our Music students all

the best for their performances for the HSC markers on 10 September 2010.

PARENT AND STUDENT FEEDBACK

The College remains committed to gaining feedback from parents and students on all aspects of our operation

and the quality of education that we provide. Such feedback assists us to evaluate our programs, reflect on our

practices and, where appropriate, make changes to improve our practice.

In the coming weeks the College will be seeking feedback from our parents and students in Years 7 and 12. The

Year 12 surveys will give us an insight of the level of success our students and their parents feel we have achieved

in preparing our graduating class for the Higher School Certificate and their readiness to enter the adult world. The

Year 7 surveys will allow parents and students to give us feedback on our 7-Success Transition Program, which

celebrates its tenth anniversary this year.

In Term 4, the College will be undertaking further surveys of parents in some of our Junior School years.

GRIEVANCE POLICY

At times, there are matters and issues that parents wish to raise with the College in relation to their sons or

daughters. I appreciate parents raising their concerns, thus allowing us to work, in partnership, through the issues.

I encourage parents to raise concerns as early as possible so that problems can be addressed before they become

major issues. The College Grievance Policy outlining the process for parents to raise concerns is available on the

College Parents Intranet in the documents folder and a Summary of the Protocols may be found in the Student

Information Handbooks Page 21 (Secondary School) or Page 20 (Junior School).

UNIFORM CHANGEOVER

As we move into Spring, a number of parents have asked about the changeover to summer uniform in the last

weeks of term.

The College recognises the benefits that many of our Junior School students gain from being active at recess and

lunch, therefore, students in the Junior School will be allowed to wear either their summer or winter uniform in the

last two weeks of term. Students who select to wear their winter uniforms in these weeks may be given permission

not to wear their blazers on the warmer days.

Students in the Secondary School will be expected to wear their winter uniform until the end of Term 3 and return

in their summer uniforms at the commencement of Term 4. This decision has been taken due to Secondary

students tending to be more passive at recess and lunch and the number of formal events that are scheduled as

we farewell Year 12. Students will be expected to wear blazers at Formal Assemblies and to and from school.

At the commencement of Term 4, all students are expected to be in summer uniform. Students in Year 10 are

given permission to stay in their winter uniform if they have grown out of their summer uniforms. As parents check

uniforms, please check the length of dresses and skirts and make the relevant repairs if their daughters have had a

growth spurt during the winter months.

ELLEN WARD – HUMANITIES TEACHER

I was born and educated in North Queensland which excuses my support of the Maroons and

the Cowboys! I became a Christian when I was 16 and an orphan at 18. What I lacked in a

biological family, my loving Heavenly Father has made up in spades in caring Christian

friends. In the fullness of time, He also provided me with a supportive husband and three

wonderful children.

When I graduated from University, I went to New Zealand to teach. There I enjoyed amazing

scenery, the hospitality of many locals, cold weather – remember I was from North

Queensland – and saw snow for the first time.

Since returning to Australia to get married, I have lived in the boarding facilities of The Kings School, Parramatta;

the Cathedral School in Townsville and The Scot’s College in Bellevue Hill. At each of these schools I have worked

either part time or as a casual teacher. For a few years, just before I had my first child, I worked for a building

society at West Ryde. I was held up by an armed robber twice in the first six months!

God has been very gracious to me in allowing me the privilege of working at Broughton where I teach Humanities

subjects to Years 8 to 12. Broughton is an amazing community with so many wonderful parents, students, staff and

former students. I have learnt much in the seven years I have been here and enjoy sharing my delight in my

subject area and in challenging students to grow in positive ways. Above all, I love to tell of my relationship with

my Lord Jesus who has never, ever let me down.

CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP TRAINING

A Year 6 student and a few Year 5 students were selected to go on a Leadership Training Day to do with Cru Club

at William Carey Christian School. The teacher who came with us was Mrs Cooke. We had lots of fun. When we got

to William Carey we were divided into groups. The groups were made up of a couple of different schools, so

including Broughton there were three schools all together. First our groups decorated our posters and then there

was a kind of quiz show. The last activity we were split into different rooms around the school and we were set

different tasks. At the end of the program we were given some snacks and a bag containing all sorts of things

about Jesus and Cru Club, my favourite were the lollies.

MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIAD

A team of students in Years 5 & 6 have been representing our College in the annual Australian Mathematical

Olympiad. This is a very challenging Mathematical Problem Solving competition. Currently Jackson Surman (6C) is

leading in the results, followed closely by Elizabeth Reid (5C), Rowen Kell (6G)and Claire Hudson (6C).

SUMMER UNIFORM – CHANGEOVER FOR JUNIOR SCHOOL STUDENTS ONLY

A reminder to parents that Summer uniform is to be worn officially from the beginning of Term 4, for the whole

College. All students are to return to the College in full summer uniform on 11 October 2010. For the Junior

School, however, in recognition that Junior School students run around at break times, there will be a changeover

period of uniform in the event of warm weather in the last two weeks of Term Three. Parents should ensure that all

items of their child’s uniform fit properly and are in good repair. Any new items should be purchased from the

Uniform Shop before the end of term in order to be prepared.

PRIMARY CHAPEL MONDAY 6 SEPTEMBER

This Chapel service will be located in the Worship Centre, commencing at 2.05pm.

WINTER IPSSO FINALS

The finals for the Winter Competition of IPSSO will be taking place next Wednesday 8 September at Macarthur

Anglican College. All of Broughton’s IPSSO teams represented our school with pride throughout a very rain

damaged competition.

I would like to congratulate the following teams on making the finals: The 3/4 Oz Tag, 3/4 Netball and 5/6 Netball.

I would also like to make special mention of both Football (Soccer) teams for their fine efforts. Both teams missed

the finals, but only by 1 competition point or by goal difference.

We wish these three teams all the best as they represent themselves, and us all, at the finals next week.

SENIOR SCHOOL PARENT WORKSHOP

On Wednesday 8 September Mrs Clipsham, Stage 6 Coordinator, will chair a parent workshop

in the IRC 5.30-6.30pm for all interested parents of Year 10-12 students. We will canvas such

areas as coping with the highs and lows, how parents may give practical and emotional

support, explain further the expectations of the College and of the Board of Studies in relation

to the Preliminary (Year 11) and Higher School Certificate (Year 12) courses and address any

questions that you may have as parents. This workshop will be interactive and is particularly

designed for those families who are doing their ‘first’ Higher School Certificate but all are

welcome. If you are planning to attend the Parent Workshop could you send an email to

[email protected] or telephone and leave a message at reception 02 4633 8365.

AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE FOR NATIONAL CAPITAL EXCURSION

Year 10 students from Broughton undertook an educational tour of the national capital in June of this year. While

on this tour they participated in a variety of educational programmes focused on Australia’s history, culture,

heritage and democracy. Visits were made to Parliament House, the Electoral Education Centre and the Australian

War Memorial. The experience was assessed as part of their Australian History and Geography (with Civics and

citizenship) School Certificate courses.

We did not acknowledge at the time the contribution of the Australian Government to this field study.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their National

Capital as part of their civics and citizenship education. To assist parents in meeting the cost of the excursion the

Australian Government is contributing funding under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER)

programme toward the travel expenses incurred. This contribution will be paid directly to the school upon

completion of the excursion.

We would like to thank the Australian Government for their support of this program.

ANNUAL YEAR 12 VERSUS STAFF FOOTBALL GAME AND BBQ LUNCH

It is that time of the year again when Year 12 challenge the ‘fit and talented’ staff at Broughton to a game of

Football. The secondary school is invited to be there to cheer on the teams on Monday 20 September in Periods 5

& 6. There is a gold coin donation collected from all spectators which goes to the senior school charity the African

Aids Foundation. Students will need sunscreen, their hats and a gold coin to attend the great football challenge.

Training has already begun in earnest!

The Senior SRC will also be serving a Sausage Sizzle lunch before the game as a charity fundraiser. A delicious

sausage sandwich will be $2.00 and an icy cold soft drink $2.00. The SRC will be taking orders for the BBQ in the

next few weeks at House Tutor.

GIRLS CIS CUP FOOTBALL TEAM KNOCKED OUT OF THE SEMIS

Unfortunately the girls CIS Cup team have bowed out of the competition to William Clarke College 3-2.

It was a fantastic game, however our dominance in possession and opportunities just could not be converted to

goals. BAC started incredibly well and imposed a very dominant passing game on William Clarke - They found it

hard to get the ball from our girls. Somehow we found ourselves down 2-0 in the first half despite the ball barely

being in our own half. However, the girls fought back to level at 2-2 with some outstanding work from the

Chapman girls, Kayla Blainey and Ali Ormrod. Jesse Sapsed pulled off some wonderful saves to keep the scores

level, despite feeling quite sick. The game went to extra time where the golden goal applied – first team to score

wins. However, after 85 mins of play William Clarke had a couple of players with a bit more strength and fitness

and fatigue got the better of us.

I cannot speak highly enough of how well they all played – they each played their position to a very high level.

Congratulations girls on a great campaign!
