Common HMI problems 1

Operations

When designing your HMI, the lack of an object model in PLCs makes it hard to get all relevant information included in graphical elements and faceplates.

The lack of built in information navigation reduces operator efficiency

Graphics

It is hard to create today’s top of the line graphics with old graphics technology

Old graphical packages make products hard to use and contribute to the poor look of the graphics

Reuse of graphics is hard within and between projects



Workplace handling

Creating an efficient operator workplace takes a lot of work (development time) in many products

Dual screen workplaces are difficult to set up

It is nearly impossible to define window behaviors that allow operators to be efficient



Product package

Many HMI products have a base system and many options, which add cost during project development

A great deal of experience is required to set-up a Client-Server environment

Creation of functions like faceplates, document access and web integration require additional custom development

For a project where controllers are needed, additional cost and effort is required to get engineering tool licenses and perform these installations
