History &

Our story started back in 1896 when the innovative

Price Brothers founded their earthenware manufacturing

company in Crown Works, Burslem, specialising in table

top accessories and teapots. The brothers quickly became

renowned for their distinctive designs. Through their

hard work and dedication the Price Brothers brand saw

rapid success and in 1934 they moved to the Top Bridge

Works in Longport, where they became known as Price

Bros Ltd.

During their time at the Top Bridge Works the brothers

developed a strong working bond with Kensington

Potteries, who specialised in novelty teapots. This bond

grew so strong that two companies eventually merged

in 1962 to become known as Price and Kensington.

Rich in heritage and passionate about tabletop accessories

and teapots, the Price & Kensington brand continues to

flourish under family ownership. Whilst teapots remain

the heart of the product range, we also offer a number of

tabletop collections including co-ordinating storage and

dinnerware to accommodate all tastes and styles.

We understand that for generations, the kitchen has been

the heart of the home, which has been and remains the

fundamental inspiration for our new developments.

Brown Betty

An English

The Brown Betty teapot was created in Stoke-on-Trent;

the heart of British potteries in 1800’s. Locally quarried red

clay was used due to its affordable and durable qualities.

The clay was also well known for retaining heat, which

was perfect for teapots.

The bulbous, round shape referred to as ‘Betty’ infuses

the perfect brew by allowing tea leaves to swirl freely

around the pot, releasing the flavours.

The glaze is “Manganese Brown” which was developed by

the Marquis of Rockingham. The shape and the name

were eventually shortened to the affectionate term

‘Brown Betty’. This teapot has become an English classic

and is very much used as an everyday item in modern

day living.

Price & Kensington teapots have continued to evolve since

the Brown Betty days by developing a range of fashion led

colour palettes for modern day living. Ranging from soft

neutral hues to vivid, bright tones whist maintaining the

historical shape and functionality of the ‘Betty’ teapot

with a non-drip spout.

The 2 cup and the 6 cup sizes can now be used with and

without a fine mesh stainless steel filter which allows even

the finest loose leaf tea to infuse perfectly.

A history of tea

While we tend to think of tea as a very British affair it was actually popular for

thousands of years before it met our shores. It is widely believed that tea was

discovered as far back as 2737BC when on a hot, sunny day the Second Emperor

of China was relaxing under a tree when some tea leaves blew into his hot cup

of water. Many years later it was the Dutch who brought tea to Europe and then

England when King Charles II married Catherine of Braganza. Following this

royal coupling, tea-drinking went from strength to strength and to this day tea

remains a firm favourite and a vital part of everyday life.
