Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I find the units (subjects) for each major and minor? The section of the guide under ‘Unit Information’ has a link to a full list of units connected to your degree. First year students should start by enrolling in units at the introductory 100 level and will have a 1 as the first number. The Course Enrolment Guide is a ‘live’ document it may be updated throughout the year, and each year, you should download your own copy of the new Course Enrolment Guide for your degree. Please pay close attention to your Course map when enrolling into your units for the year.

What happens if I want to do study that is not listed for the degree I am enrolled in? It’s important not to mix and match between different degrees.

I have finished first year and I am now enrolling for second year. Is there anything I need to

know before I enrol?

Follow your program map and, by now, you should have decided what your Majors (and possibly Minor) areas are, and therefore what units you will select from Global Studies List A, B, and C, and for your Global Studies Electives. You should also now be seriously planning what you will do for your overseas global studies experience next year (in Year 3)

I have failed one (or more units) in a semester. How do I now choose what units to take for

my degree?

If you fail one or more units in a semester, you must arrange a meeting with your Course Coordinator to discuss the correct path of study for you. In many cases, you will have to wait 12 months for the failed unit to become available to you again, so you will need a customised Program Map that you can follow to ensure you meet the requirements of your degree. What is the difference between a major and a minor?

Depending on which Global Studies dual degree you are enrolled in, you will need to decide on a ‘Major’ and/or ‘Minor’ area of study. A major consist of 8 units (80 cp) in the same area of study (discipline), usually with the same first four letter code (eg. GEOG is for Geography units, HIST for History units). A "Major" is 80 cp in prescribed units in one discipline or approved interdisciplinary area, normally including at least 10 cp at introductory level, at least 40 cp at 200 level and at least 20 cp from 300 level. A "Minor" is 40 cp in prescribed units in one discipline or approved interdisciplinary area, normally including at least 10 cp at introductory level and at least 20 cp at advanced level.

I have a disability and would like to know what support the university provides The university has a Disability Liaison Unit to assist students with ways the university can support study at ACU. This includes assistance with tutorial times, note takers, exam and test adjustments and many other forms of support. It’s a good idea to make contact with the disability advisors early (well before the start of the semester If possible) so that an Individual Education Plan can be established for you. I would like to change my major or minor, is that possible? Yes, it is possible. Depending on where you are in your degree this may extend your degree. Please consult your course coordinator before making changes. What is my GPA and how can I calculate it? Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is a measure of how you are performing in your studies through time. You may find your current GPA via Student Connect, or you can calculate it yourself following these guidelines in Section 9.4 http://handbook.acu.edu.au/handbooks/handbook_2018/general_information/2018_academic_regulations

Study Abroad or Global Studies International Internship Program

Global Studies degrees feature a compulsory overseas experience in semester 2 of Year 3: GLST300 (internship) or GLST301-304 (Study Abroad). You need to familiarize yourself with when you are due to complete this experience, and begin planning from the start of your degree what you will do. You will need to attend information sessions on Study Abroad and the GSIIP in the year BEFORE you undertake your overseas experience, normally Year 2 of your degree. Please note that some Study Abroad and GSIPP activities will have additional entry requirements such as a minimum GPA.

Working with Children and Police Checks

Those students participating in the Global Studies International Internship Program must obtain background checks as required by Federal and State/Territory laws if their proposed work might involve working with children. Please refer to ACU’s webpage for requirements in your local State or Territory. Your application for the GSIIP should include evidence of the relevant Federal and/or State working with children and police checks, where relevant. https://www.acu.edu.au/staff/human_resources/working_@_acu/health,_safety_and_wellbeing/protecting_children_and_vulnerable_adults/legislation_and_regulations Your application for the Internship should include evidence of the relevant Federal and/or State working with children and police checks, where relevant. You may also require further checks as stipulated by your host country or organisation if you

undertake an internship program overseas.

3. UNIT INFORMATION

2018 Unit Selection

Please note that study modes and unit availability are subject to change and not all units are on offer at all times. Students must refer to their course map first, and then check the

relevant offering list/s below for 2018 unit availability prior to enrolling.

GLOBAL STUDIES UNITS Specified global studies units that all students do. These units may not be double counted in the Arts major or minor:

HIST115 Global History: Six degrees of separation POLS104 Introduction to International Relations GLST305 Global Studies Research Project (Pre: At least 20cp of specified global studies units)

Global Studies List A, B and C You are to choose one unit (10 cp) from each of the Global Studies A, B and C Lists: GLOBAL STUDIES LIST A (200 Level) - Choose one unit from this list

GEOG207 Precarious States: Development, Geopolitics and Livelihoods HIST251 Human Rights in History PHIL202 Justice, Authority and Human Rights POLS210 Racism in Our Times: Global Perspectives on Indigenous Politics

GLOBAL STUDIES LIST B (200 Level) - Choose one unit from this list GEOG204 Environmental Sustainability: The Global Challenge POLS213 International Security and Terrorism SOCS243 Global Health [online]

GLOBAL STUDIES LIST C (300 Level) - Choose one unit from this list POLS309 World Justice and Politics [online] SOCS301 Society, Justice and Economy

Please note, that you may only choose units from the Global Studies A, B and C lists that are not in your Arts Major discipline. For example, a History Major student cannot choose HIST251 from Global Studies List A, as they may need to take this unit as part of their 8 units in the History Major. If you are uncertain about your unit choices at any time, please contact your course coordinator for assistance. Global Studies Electives In the second year of your degree, you will choose two units as Global Studies Electives. You cannot choose electives that are already in your Major. Instead, these electives should come from a different discipline. For example, a Geography Major student could choose a Global Studies elective unit from the area of Development Studies, such as DVST101.

The Core Curriculum

Compulsory for all undergraduate courses All undergraduate students are required to complete the University Core Curriculum as part of their course. The Core Curriculum is comprised of three units and further information on its structure can be found on the Core Curriculum4 webpage. The Core Curriculum units specific to your course are indicated on the course map and can also be found in the Handbook. The Australian Catholic University Core Curriculum has been designed to focus on aspects of the University’s identity and mission. These units emphasise critical judgment, clear expression, ethical decision-making and concern for others, as individuals and as a community. The two University Core Curriculum units are: UNCC100 Self and Community: Exploring the Anatomy of Modern Society UNCC300 Justice and Change in a Global World These units are often taught over differing week patterns to allow for student placements at various times during semester. Students should take special care to note the week pattern of tutorials when they allocate in tutorial direct to ensure that they are choosing the correct stream for their course. These units are also offered in intensive mode in winter and summer.
