FIBA World Championship vs. FIBA Americas Championship

What’s the difference between a FIBA Americas Championship and a FIBA World Championship? It maysound confusing at first, but they are definitely two differenttournaments.

FIBA Americas is the basketball zone that encorporates North, South and Central America and theCaribbean. FIBA Americas competitions include teamsfrom the zone only and each FIBA Americas competition isa qualifying tournament to earn a slot in the following year’sFIBA World Championship. For example, the top four finishers from this year’s FIBA Americas U16 Championship qualify to compete in the 2014 FIBA U17World Championship.

The FIBA World Championships include countries thatqualify from the five FIBA zones: FIBA Africa, FIBA Americas, FIBA Asia, FIBA Europe and FIBA Oceania.

While a gold medalist at a FIBA Americas Champi-onship can claim to be the best in the Americas zone, aFIBA World Championship gold medalist lays claim to thetop team on the planet.

A Little HistoryUSA Basketball’s two prior U16 National Teams

enjoyed great success. Traveling to Mendoza, Argentina, for the inaugural FIBA Americas U16 Championship in2009, the U.S. squad, which featured Bradley Beal, QuinnCook and James McAdoo, was flat out impressive. Scoringan average of 113.0 points a game, the USA team won itsfive games by an average of 33.8 ppg. to claim the competition’s first gold medal. The 2011 U.S. squad, withthe likes of Aaron Gordon, Jahlil Okafor and Jabari Parkeron its roster, was not much different, decimating opponentsby an average margin of 42.2 ppg. en route to a perfect 5-0mark and the gold medal.

Chaired in a non-voting position bySean Ford, the USA Basketball men’s na-tional team director, the 2013-14 USA Bas-ketball Men’s Developmental National Team Committee also includes National Federa-tion of High Schools (NFHS) appointeesJohn Olive (Torrey Pines H.S., Calif.) andHerman Harried (Lake Clifton CampusH.S., Md.); Amateur Athletic Union (AAU)representatives Rich Gray (St. Louis EaglesAAU, Mo.) and Boo Williams (Boo WilliamsAAU, Va.); at-large member Dave Telep(ESPN senior college basketball recruitinganalyst); and athlete representativesChauncey Billups, a 2010 FIBA WorldChampionship gold medalist and a memberof three USA Basketball teams, and GerryMcNamara, who played on the 2005 USA

3x3 Opens Doors For Rising Int’l StarsFIBA launched its 3x3 initiative with inaugural

competitions in 2010, and the game and its reputation arequickly growing. Played on a half-court with a 12-secondshot clock, four players to a team and no coach, 3x3 is fast-paced and challenging.

The first major 3x3 international tournament was part ofthe 2010 Youth Olympic Games. The YOG featured athletes age 17-and-under, and while the Games, organized by the IOC, were based on an Olympic format –a multi-sport event with teams from around the globe livingtogether in a village and competing in 26 different sports(up to 28 for 2014)– there were several differences.

The major revision that stood out among basketball aficionados was the fact that FIBA and the IOC organizedthe basketball tournament in a 3x3 format. FIBA was already looking ahead to requesting the IOC add 3x3 as abasketball discipline in future Olympic Games, and it wasan immediate hit. Played outside in a festive atmosphere, the basketball tournament quickly became a fan favorite.
