What is Mmabana?

The name “Mmabana” originally translates from the Tswana language as “mother of children”, a name which reflects the heart of the non-profit organisation called Mmabana Community Outreach of Choma, Zambia. In one of the poorest countries of the world (86% of all Zambians live below the poverty line of $1 per day1),

Mmabana has set out to care for the most vulnerable of its community. Primarily concerned with children, the organisation has extended its activities to empower the community at large, the youth, the women, the elderly and the impaired. The activities expand from education support for underprivileged children to community outreach for the needy, computer classes, youth programs and many more.

Mmabana takes a big focus on its sustainability. Therefore, recent empowerment programs such as an internet café or a copy shop have been introduced to help cover running costs and produce surpluses to expand the children, youth and community programs. Mmabana Tailoring is another step that shall also contribute to community improvement in the field of woman empowerment and child education.

Mmabana Community Outreach of Choma is a non-profit, community-based organisation with its core values as a faith-based organisation. It is registered in Zambia, but is also supported by the Friends of Mmabana Deutschland e.V., based in Germany, and the Mmabana Foundation, based in South Africa.

Why did Mmabana launch this catalogue?

Mmabana Tailoring is an initiative is to support the Zambian community as well as the Mmabana organisation by

empowering the community through the support and work we will bring to our network of tailors in Choma, who are mainly women working to feed their families. By sewing for you, our local tailors are proud and honored to share their gift and passion around the world meanwhile receiving a fair price for their skill & efforts.

boosting the Mmabana programs through the profit gained from the tailoring program. The profits will directly help the orphans and vulnerable children within Mmabana programs through the Mmabana Education Support Fund.

Enabling Mmabana future plans to sew school uniforms at a very affordable price. They shall be sold with few or no profit at all, hereby reducing a part of the education costs so that poor families are able to send their children to school. (In Zambia, one in five children is not attending school at all due to schooling costs, such as uniforms, materials and travel expenses2.)

The Mmabana Tailoring Collection `12 is a first step in letting this initiative take

shape. We offer you fashion with a special blend of African spirit and European taste, with a social cause that is truly unique! Each item in the catalogue has been designed

by us and each garment will be sewn according to your specific measurements, fitting you perfectly. We hope you will enjoy our catalogue as much as we enjoy sharing a little bit of Mmabana and Zambia with you. And we are confident that you will enjoy sharing it with your friends and family, thus bringing a little bit of Mmabana into your home.

With much love,

Sarah Strittmatter, Pierre-Yves & Jean-Christophe Dalka

The story of Pamela, Mmabana’s first tailor

When we came to Choma to visit Mmabana we thought about having special clothing made for us. That is how we met Pamela, a tailor working in the Shampande market who was recommended to us. After being convinced of her professionalism and touched by her story, we thought that Pamela should be the first tailor in the network of tailors Mmabana was planning to develop. Here are a few words from the gentle hands that will sew your orders. Pamela is quite a woman! She has faced many deceptions and struggles in her life, but still she remains joyful and full of hope.

“I am a single mom raising three young children who are 8, 6 and 2 years old. Of course I am facing the same questions as any single mom in the world: ‘Will I be able to feed my children today? Will I be able to pay the rent of the house?’ It's often difficult to pay the bills so I need to borrow money from friends.”

Pamela pays 22 € a month for the rental of a very simple and small house. It may not seem a lot to many of us, but this little is one third of what she actually earns in a regular month. Pamela is a hard worker. Sitting in her little studio, she sews 10 hours a day, 7 days a week.

“Except when there are no clients, no orders. Then it is boring. Very boring and very long. I just wait for customers to come.” Especially during the rainy season, from November to April, Pamela loses out on a lot of customers “because farmers are leaving the town and go back to their villages to prepare the land. And with continuous rain less people are coming to the market”.

Page 6: 2012 Mmabana Tailoring Catalogue

Furthermore, Pamela faces competition of two further tailors in the same market.

“Back in 2004, I was the only tailor here, but now we are three tailors. We have to share the customers and share the workload.”

Tailoring is in fact one of the most common professions for the women of Zambia. The number of tailors is increasing faster than the demand of the Zambian market does. This makes it more difficult for tailors who see their incomes decreased.

The common struggle of Zambia's tailors – foremost women supporting their families – is another reason why Mmabana is willing to build a strong network of tailors in Choma. By extending the local market towards European and South African customers, Mmabana hopes not only to expand their markets by giving them more work, but also to increase their level of income – knowing that by empowering women you empower their children.

Behind each woman like Pamela, there is not only a story but also an entire family in need of support. Helping them in their business will definitely

contribute to their children’s future and the community at large.

How to proceed?

Due to the high cost of shipping from Zambia, our tailoring offers displayed in this catalogue cannot be permanently available. However, by gathering all the orders and shipping them together as a bulk load, we are able to decrease the shipping costs to a more reasonable rate that is affordable to you and ensures a fair share to the tailor.

This season's deadline for orders will be on the 26th of November 2012, so that

the orders can arrive in due time for Christmas.

Note: Don’t delay your order. First come, first serve!

Follow the next steps to order and support the project:

1. SELECT YOUR ITEMS AND MATERIALS Make your selection of the items on display and select your preferred materials.

2. FILL THE ORDER SHEET AND ORDER Fill the Order Sheet attached to the catalogue.

Only fill in the yellow boxes provided.

Enable macros so that the functions within the Order Sheet work.

Please note that one line equals one item. If you wish to order the same item more than once, then simply repeat clicking the “add item” button until desired quantity is achieved. For instance, if you wish to order three same shirts, make sure you have three different lines with the same shirt item and material code.

You will also need to add your measurements required for each item in the yellow boxes provided. View the tutorial on how to take your measurements.

Make sure to enter your personal information (address, phone number, email), and send the Order Sheet as a PDF to: [email protected]

3. PAYMENT Once the Order Sheet has been emailed as a PDF you can proceed with the payment. The payment method will be by means of a bank transfer to the following account:
