Horary is the branch of astrology which deals with answering questions. The astrologer can makepredictions from these questions by judging a horoscope for the moment the question is asked. The horoscope is set up in exactly the same manner as any other form of astrology. One of thedifferences between horary and other branches is its reliance on a simple set of rules. Theserules are important in the judgment of the horoscope. No other branch of astrology relies on rulesto the same extent as horary. It is the rules that usually decide the outcome to questions.

ost questions can be answered with a simple yes or no. !pplying major aspects" or theirabsence" between the ruler of the ascendant and the ruler of the sign on the cusp of the houseasked about or" the oon and the planet ruling the sign on the cusp of the house asked about"can decide the answer to the question. The art of horary is in knowing the rules by which thesemajor aspects will gi#e a positi#e or negati#e result" and how to apply them.

    $ecei#ing the %uestion

The QuerentThe person asking the question is referred to as the querent.

The QuesitedThe person or thing asked about is referred to as the quesited.

The SignificatorsThe significators are the planets ruling the querent and the quesited.

&sually the outer planets are not used as main significators" only the traditional rulers. 'o" arsruling 'corpio" 'aturn ruling !quarius and (upiter ruling )isces.

'ometimes a third person will ask a question in which they ha#e no direct role to play. *orinstance when someone asks about a friend who is about to ha#e a baby. In such cases thequerent would be ruled by the planet ruling the ascendant. The astrologer ne#ertheless shouldignore their ruling planet and concentrate only on the significators for the friend and her expectedbaby.

How to Locate the Question?ost astrologers use the latitude and longitude of the person asking the question since thequestion was born in their mind at their location and not at that of the astrologer+s. It is theirquestion and only they fully understand it.

,xample - If the querent is in New /ork and the astrologer is in 0ondon" use the latitude andlongitude of New /ork which is 12N13" 45634.

,xample 7 If the querent who is in 8ublin telephones the astrologer in 0ondon" use the latitudeand longitude of 8ublin which is 35N72" 96-3.

,xample 5 If the querent in :openhagen writes a letter" sends a fax or uses the electronic mailon their computer" to the astrologer in 0ondon" use the latitude and longitude of :openhagen

    which is 33N12" -7,53.

How to Time the Question? The moment the question is asked either face to face or by telephone is the time to use fordrawing the horoscope" whether it is fully understood or not. If the question is included in a letter"fax or on electronic mail" it should be timed for the moment the astrologer reads the question. Ifthe question is not fully understood by the astrologer at that moment" it can be clarified later indiscussion with the querent.

The instant the astrologer first asks their own question is the correct time to use for drawing the

horoscope. If" because of their knowledge of the planetary mo#ements or for any other reasonsuch as waiting for the emotional impact to be strong enough after they ha#e already thought ofthe question" the astrologer decides to postpone the moment and ask again at a later time" theywill only succeed in decei#ing themsel#es. There should be no reason whatsoe#er for delaying orpostponing the time of their own question or that of their client+s and they should not expect asuccessful outcome to the question.

Understanding the Question'ometimes it may be necessary to seek further clarification from the querent as they may notalways re#eal the full meaning behind their question or express themsel#es clearly enough. Theremay be personal reasons for this" or it may be that they ha#e difficulty in clarifying their question"or it may be that the astrologer simply does not understand. This point is #ery important as theastrologer is at the mercy of the querent in the sense that the question posed" which may appearto be simple enough" has deeper meanings for the querent. The astrologer will be unaware ofthese deeper meanings unless they interrogate the querent until they understand the questionfully. It is best to be certain of the question before delineating the horoscope.

Asking the same question twiceIt is pointless asking the same question twice as it will only produce an in#alid horoscope on thesecond occasion. It is the horoscope that was drawn for the moment when the question was first

asked that is the #alid one. It is essential to keep a record of questions in order to a#oid askingthe same question or one #ery similar to it" twice" perhaps in a diary especially kept for horary.

House System; In my experience the $egiomontanus house system has pro#en to be the most successfulsystem in horary. This is due to the fact that in o#er -1 years of horary experience any mistakesthat I ha#e made ha#e been attributed to other factors and not to this house system.Ne#ertheless" other house systems may be used if preferred. ,ach astrologer must test theaccuracy of their own fa#ourite house system for themsel#es;.

The Orbs of the PanetsIn -27? !8 the !rab astrologer known as !l @iruni wrote ;The @ook of Instruction in the ,lementsof the !rt of !strology; which was first published in ,nglish in -?51. It is belie#ed to be the firsttime in written form that each planet was allocated a certain number of degrees for its orbs.

The Orbs of )lanets according to !l @iruni

    'un -3Aoon -7Aercury 4ABenus 4Aars CA(upiter ?A

    'aturn ?A

Each planet had its own number of degrees of orb and when two planets wereaspecting each other their degrees were added together then divided by two. Thiswas later called the moiety of the orbs, from the French word for half, moiti.

!lthough most astrologers agreed more or less unknowingly with !l @iruni+s orbs there were anumber of others who either widened or narrowed the orbs according to their own opinion orexperience. The famous ,nglish astrologer 6illiam 0illy ga#e the following list as his preferred setof orbs.

'ince the exact orbs of the outer planets are still unknown with any degree of certainty" it wouldbe reasonable to allow C degrees each for &ranus" Neptune and )luto until pro#en otherwise.

    8,*INITION

6hen the two main significators each applies by major aspect to a third planet" this third planetcan act as a transmittor and collect their lights bringing them back into aspect again. 6hether theplanets apply by direct or retrograde motion to the transmitting planet is of no importance.

*urthermore" the transmitting planet is able to collect more than one pair of significators pro#idedthey are within the moiety of orbs. !lthough the outer planets are not used as main significatorsthey can act as collectors of light.

,xample ercury at -A55+ Birgo and Benus at 3A12+ Birgo both apply by conjunction to 'aturn+santiscion point at ?A12+ Birgo. 'aturn therefore collects both their lights. ercury ha#ing separatedfrom Benus+ antiscion at 71A72+ !ries.

8efinition6hen the oon or a planet mo#ing faster of both significators" separates from one of them andapplies to the other by major aspect" it can act as a transmittor and reunite the two significatorsand bring perfection. The transmitting planet can translate more than one separating significatorto more than one applying significator as long as they are within the moiety of orbs. !lthough thethree outer planets are not used as main significators" they can be in#ol#ed in translations of light.

    *ormula b5 G s- in sep.aspect and b5 G s7 in appl.aspect

    or b5 G s7 in sep.aspect and b5 G s- in appl.aspect

    The power of translations

The translation in#ol#ing the three planets can pre#ent a fourth planet from aspecting any one of

them" e#en if that 1th planet is a significator.

!lso" any one of the three planets in#ol#ed in the translation can be pre#ented from aspecting afourth planet which may or may not be a significator.

,xample Benus ruler of the ascendant at 73 'agittarius has separated from a trine to ars rulerof the 4th house at 77 0eo but the oon at 71 0ibra separates from a sextile to ars and appliesby sextile to Benus reuniting both planets by trine.

Translations of light by parallel of declination

,xample The oon at -5A1?+N separates by parallel from 'aturn at 3A75+N and applies bycontraparallel to (upiter at -3A-7+. The oon translates the light of 'aturn to (upiter bringing them

    back into contraparallel once again.

    Translations of light by antiscia

,xample The oon at -5A19+ 0eo separates by square from (upiter+s antiscion at ?A-5+ 'corpioand applies by sextile to the 'un+s antiscion at -1A1?+ Femini. therefore translates the light of(upiter to the 'un by the antiscia. The 'un at -3A--+ :ancer ha#ing separated by trine from(upiter+s antiscion.

8efinition6hen two significators apply by major aspect to each other but before perfecting the slower of thetwo" the planet doing the frustrating" aspects a third planet therefore frustrating the fastersignificator and leading to a ;no; or negati#e answer to the question. !lthough the three outerplanets are not used as main significators" they can be in#ol#ed in frustration.

This is the first of two rules where inhibiting planets ha#e the power to pre#ent major aspects from

perfecting between significators e#en though they are within the moiety of their orbs at the time ofthe question.

,xample ercury ruler of the ascendant at CA 'agittarius is applying by conjunction to Benusruler of the 7nd house of the quesited at -7A 'agittarius" but before the aspect is completed"Benus trines ars at -5A 0eo. ercury is therefore the frustrated planet.

    *rustration by parallel of declination

,xample ercury at 72A57+N applies by parallel to Benus at -4A3-+N but before the perfectiontakes place Benus contraparallel (upiter at -3A52+'. (upiter therefore frustrates the ercuryparallel Benus.

    *rustration by antiscia

,xample The oon at 71A13+ :apricorn applies by square to the 'un+s antiscion at 9A7C+ Taurusbut before the perfection takes place the 'un at 75A57+ 0eo applies by square to &ranus+ antiscionat 71A22+ 'corpio therefore frustrates the oon trine 'un+s antiscion.

    P#OH%(%T%O$

8efinition! ;no; or negati#e answer will result when two significators are applying by major aspect to eachother but before perfecting" the first recei#es a major aspect from a third faster planet such asercury or Benus which then in turn applies by major aspect to the second significator. This is thetraditional description of prohibition. Ne#ertheless" if any planet applies to one of the significatorsbefore they perfect their aspect" this will also function as a prohibition and will produce a negati#eanswer to the question. This rule is the second example of an inhibiting planet in action.

!lthough the three outer planets are not used as main significators" they can be in#ol#ed inprohibition. These kind of prohibitions can in no way effect aspects or other rules in#ol#ing theoon and main significators. )rohibition in#ol#ing the outer planets does not necessarily mean a;no; or negati#e answer.

    *ormula s- G s7 in applying aspect

    and b5 aspecting s- before s- G s7 aspect

and b5 is not the oon.

,xample Benus at 4A !ries applies to ars at -2A !ries" but ercury at 9A !ries first conjunctBenus then ars before Benus and ars perfect their conjunction. This is the traditional methodof prohibition.

    )rohibition by parallel of declination

,xample ercury at -?A-4+N applies by parallel to Benus at 71A-?+N but is prohibited by the 'unat 75A27+N which perfects with Benus before ercury perfects with Benus.

    )rohibition by antiscia

,xample The 'un at -3A--+ :ancer applies by trine to ars+ antiscion point at 7-A57+ )isces butbefore perfecting Benus at -2A-?+ 0eo will sextile the 'un+s antiscion point at -1A1?+ Feminitherefore prohibiting the 'un ars perfection.

8efinition)erfection is denied when one significator applying by major aspect to the other significator turnseither stationary retrograde or direct before completing the aspect.

!lthough the three outer planets are not used as main significators" they can be in#ol#ed inrefranation. This does not necessarily mean a ;no; or negati#e answer.

,xample ercury the ascendant ruler at 7?A !ries is applying by conjunction with Benus rulingthe 7nd house of the quesited at 5A Taurus" but ercury turns stationary retrograde at -A Taurustherefore the aspect is ne#er completed.

    $efranation by parallel of declination

,xample ars at 4A21+N is applying by contraparallel to (upiter at -9A71+' but ars will turnstationary retrograde when it reaches 4A77+N therefore failing to perfect the contraparallel with(upiter.

    $efranation by antiscia

,xample ercury at -9A2C+ Birgo applies by opposition to the ascendant+s antiscion degree at-CA33+ )isces. ercury will turn stationary retrograde at -9A-5+ Birgo and fail to complete theperfection.

    !O*(UST%O$

6hen the 'un is within CA52+ of a planet" especially when it is not a significator" either applying orseparating" it combusts that planet and renders it powerless. :ombustion can occur either in orout of sign as it is the 'un+s moiety of orbs that is the deciding factor. :ombustion has alwaysbeen regarded as highly malefic in horary.

6hen the 'un is conjunct the ruler of the ascendant it will result in negati#e answers. :ombustionmay occur as a result of collection or translation of light where planets are either separating or

    applying to combustion.

6hen the 'un is conjunct the ascendant degree either separating or applying it can render thehorary in#alid. In other words" there is no way of telling the outcome to the question.
