    GENERAL INFORMATIONAn intermittent windshield wiper system and elec-

    t r i c w a s h er s a r e s t a n d a r d e q u ip m en t . Th e i n t e r m i t -

    t e nt w i pe r s y st e m p rov id es a p a u se b et w e en w i pe

    cycles for use during conditions of very light precipi-

    t a t i o n .

    Th e w i n d sh i el d w i pe rs ca n b e op er a t e d w i t h t h e

    w i nd sh iel d w i per s w it ch on ly w h en t h e i gn it i on

    switch is in t he ACCE SS ORY or RUN position. A fuse

    located in the fuse block protects the circuitry of the

    wiper system and the vehicle.

    The w iper motor ha s perman ent magn et fields. The

    s p e e d s a r e d e t e r m i n e d by c u r r e n t f l o w t o t h e a p p r o -

    priate set of brushes.

    The intermittent wipe system in a ddition t o low an d

    h i g h s p ee d, h a s a d e la y m od e . Th e d e l a y m o d e h a s a

    r a n g e of 2 t o 20 s econ d s. Th i s i s p er f or m ed b y a

    variable resistor in the wiper switch and is controlled

    electrically by t he intermitt ent wiper control unit .

    The wiper syst em completes the wipe cycle w hen

    t h e s w i t ch i s t u r n e d O F F. Th e b l a d es p a r k i n t h elowest portion of the w ipe pat tern.

    I f t h e w a s h e r k n o b i s d e p r e s s e d w h i l e i n t h e O FF

    position, the wiper control wil l operate for approxi-

    m a t e l y 3 w i pe s a n d a u t o m a t i ca l l y t u r n O FF.

    WIPERS

    The windshield wiper circuit contains three compo-

    nents; w iper/wa sher swit ch, motor, a nd front wa sher

    pu m p, m od u le a n d d el a y r es is t a n ce i n t h e w i per

    switch. The circuit receives battery feed from, and is

    protected by a 10 amp circuit breaker.

    The sw itch supplies batt ery feed to t he intermittent

    wiper module, which then supplies the motor. In the

    delay position, t he module is connected w ith the va ri-

    a bl e r e s is t or i n t h e w i p er s w i t ch . Th e v a l u e o f t h e

    r e s i s t a n c e i s u s e d by t h e m o d u l e t o c h a r g e a c a p a c i -

    t or, w h ich t r ig ger s t h e a m ou n t of d el a y b et w een

    wipes.

    Th e w i per m ot or h a s a n a r r a n g em en t of b r us h es

    providing the two wiper speeds. When the wipers are

    t u r n e d o f f , t h e p a r k s w i t c h m a i n t a i n s c u r r e n t t o t h e

    motor unti l the wipers reach the park position on the

    windshield.

    The park ar m in the motor a ssembly is connected t o

    the park switch and is driven by the motor. When the

    wiper/wa sher sw itch is turned to OFF, current flows

    t h r ou g h t h e con t a c t a n d t h e m od u le t o t h e m ot or

    unti l the wipers reach the park position.

    CAUTION: The wiper arms and blades must not bemoved manually from side to side or damage may

    result.

    WASHERS

    Wi t h t h e w a s h er s w it ch i n O N, cu r ren t f low s

    w a s h e r p u m p r u n s a s l o n g a s t h e d r i v e r h o l d s t h e

    switch in ON. The wiper module runs the wiper mo-

    t or on L O. Tu rn in g t h e s w it ch t o O FF s t ops t h e

    wipers.

    I f t h e w a s h e r k n o b i s d e p r e s s e d w h i l e i n t h e O FF

    position, the wiper control wil l opera te for approxi-

    m a t e l y 3 w i pe s a n d a u t o m a t i ca l l y t u r n O FF.

    DIAGNOSING WINDSHI ELD WIPERS(1) Remove circuit br eaker.

    (2) Mea s u r e v ol t a g e b a t t e ry s id e of t h e ci r cu it

    br ea k e r. M et e r s h ou l d r e a d ba t t e r y v ol t a g e . I f n ot ,

    repair open to splice.

    (3) Measure resistance across circuit breaker termi-

    n a l s . M et e r s h ou l d r e a d z er o o h m s. I f n ot , r e pl a ce

    circuit brea ker.

    (4) Di s con n e ct h a r n e s s s i de I n t e r m it t e n t Wi pe r

    Module connector.(5) Measure the resistance from harness side con-

    n e ct o r t e r m i n a l G t o g r o u n d. M et e r s h ou l d r e a d z er o

    ohms. If n ot, repair open to ground.

    (6) Turn ignition swit ch to ACCY.

    (7) Turn wiper switch to LO or HI.

    CAUTION: DO NOT move the switch to intermittent.

    If the switch is moved to the intermittent position

    during the next step the rheostat will be damaged.

    (8) R em ov e i n t er m i t t e n t w i p er m od u l e a n d p lu g

    connectors together from the module. The Wipers

    s h o u l d o p e r a t e i n L O a n d H I s p e e d m o d e s a n d M i s t(w a s h e r ) s h o u l d w o r k . I f w i p e r s a n d M i s t n o w o p e r -

    a t e , r e p l a c e i n t e r m i t t e n t w i p e r m o d u l e . I f n o t , g o t o

    step 10.

    (9) Measure voltage at harness connector terminal

    E w i t h w i pe r s w i t ch i n L O a n d m i st /i n t er m it t e n t .

    Meter should read battery voltage. If not, test switch.

    (10) Measure voltage at ha rness connector termina l

    C w i t h w i p er s w i t ch i n H I . M e t e r s h ou l d r e a d ba t t e r y

    voltage. If not, test switch.

    (11) Measure volta ge a t ha rness connector termina l

    F a n d m ov e w i p er s w i t ch t o O FF. M et e r s h o u ld r e a d

    battery voltage unti l wipers park and then zero volts.

    If n ot, replace swit ch.

    (12) D isconnect switch side of connector of inter-

    mittent wiper module.

    (13) M ea s u r e r e si s t a n c e a cr os s t e r m in a l s A a n d D

    w h i l e r o t a t i n g s w i t c h f r o m m i n i m u m d e l a y t o m a x i -mum delay. Meter should read 0-500K ohms. If not,

    test switch.

    (14) M ea s u r e r e si s t a n c e a cr os s t e r m in a l s A a n d G

    w h i l e r o t a t i n g s w i t c h f r o m m i n i m u m d e l a y t o m a x i -

    mum delay. Meter should read 0-500K ohms. If OK,

    replace wiper module. I f not, test switch.

    (15) M ea s u re r es is t a n ce a t t er m in a l 4. M et er

    should rea d zero ohms. I f not, repair open to ground.

    (16) To t e st t h e w i pe r m ot or t u r n t h e i gn i t ion

    s w i t ch t o AC C Y. P o si t ion t h e w i per a n d p rob e t h e

    motor connector as indicated Figure 1.

    (17) Measure voltage at terminal 1,-wiper switch in any

    posit ion. Meter should read bat tery voltage. I f OK, replace

    motor. If not, repair open from fuse panel.

    (18) Measure volta ge a t terminal 5,-wiper swit ch in

    LO. Meter should read battery voltage. If OK, replace

    motor. If n ot, repair open from wiper sw itch.

    (19) Measure volta ge a t terminal 6,-wiper swit ch in

    HI. Meter should read battery voltage. If OK, replace

    motor. If n ot, repair open from wiper sw itch.

    (20) Measure voltage at terminal 2-wiper switch to

    O FF w i t h v ol t m et e r con n e ct e d . M et e r s h ou l d r e a d

    battery voltage unti l wipers park and then zero volts.

    If OK, replace motor. If not, repair open from wiper

    switch.

    INTERMITTENT WIPER FUNCTION TESTING PRO-CEDURES

    The multifunction switch contains circuitry for:

    function of the switch fai l , the entire switch assembly

    must be replaced.

    Using an ohmmeter, test for continuity between thet er m in a l s of t h e s w it ch a s s how n i n I n t er m it t en t

    Wipe Switch Continuity Chart .

    To test t he sw itch:

    (1) Disconnect negative cable from th e ba ttery.

    (2) Remove tilt lever (tilt column only).

    (3) Remove both upper and lower steering column

    covers. R equ ires rem ova l of 3 scr ew s (Torx T-20).

    (4) Remove 4 screws holding steering column trim

    pan el (Fig. 2).

    (5) Remove 6 screws holding kn ee blocker.

    (6) Remove steering column retaining nuts.

    (7) Lower steering column to gain access to rear of

    multi function switch.

    (8) Remove switch connector (Figs. 3 and 4).If the problem occurs only in t he D ELAY mode, the

    f ol l ow i n g t e s t s a r e t o be p er f or m ed . Th e se t e s t s i n -

    volve disconnecting the intermittent wipe control unit

    which can be found on a bracket located on the driv-

    ers side kick panel.

    CONDITION

    Excessive delay (more than 30 seconds) or in-adequate variation in delay.

    PROCEDURE

    Varia tions in delay should be a s fol lows:

    (1) Minimum delay (delay control to extreme coun-

    terclockwise position before first detent ) 1/2 t o 2 sec-

    onds.

    (2) Maximum delay (delay control to extreme clock-

    wise position before off det ent) 10 to 30 seconds.

    (3) I f t h e r e i s e xce ss i ve d e la y or n o v a r i a t i on s i n

    delay proceed t o intermittent wipe switch t est .

    CONDITION

    In DELAY mode wipers run continually when

    wash is operated but do not provide an extrawipe when the wash control is released.

    PROCEDURE

    Replace the control unit.

    CONDITION

    Wipers start erratically during DE LAY mode.

    PROCEDURE

    (1) Verify that the ground connection at the instru-

    m e n t p a n e l i s m a k i n g g ood con n e ct i on (f r ee f r om

    p a i n t ) a n d i s t i g h t .

    WIPER SWITCH REPLACEMENT

    REMOVAL

    (1) Disconnect negative cable from th e ba ttery.

    (2) Remove tilt lever (tilt column only).

    (3) Remove both upper and lower steering column

    covers. R equ ires rem ova l of 3 scr ew s (Torx T-20).

    (4) Remove 4 screws holding steering column trimpan el (Fig. 2).

    (5) Remove 6 screws holding kn ee blocker.

    (6) Remove steering column retaining nuts.

    (7) Lower steering column to gain access to rear of

    multi function switch.

    (8) R em ov e m u lt i fu n ct i on s w i t ch t a m p er p roof

    m ou n t in g s cr ew s (t a m p er p roof t or x b it S n a p -O n

    TTXR20B2 or equivalent required).

    (9) G e n t l y p u l l s w i t ch a w a y f r om col u m n . L o os en

    connector screw. The screw will remain in the connec-

    tor.

    (10) Remove wiring connector from multi function

    switch (Fig. 5).

    INSTALLATION

    (1 ) I n s t a l l w i r i n g c o n n e c t o r t o s w i t c h a n d t i g h t e n

    connector reta ining screw to 2 Nm (17 in. lbs.).

    (2) M ou n t m u lt i fu n ct i on s w i t ch t o col um n a n d

    torque retaining screws to 2 Nm (17 in. lbs.).

    (3) Inst all steering column. Tighten nut s t o (105 in.

    lbs.).

    (4) Insta l l knee blocker an d t rim pan el .

    (5) Inst all steering column covers. Torque screws t o

    2 Nm (17 in. lbs.).

    (6) Install tilt lever (tilt column only).

    (7) Instal l battery negative cable.

    (8) Check al l functions of switch for proper opera-

    tion.

    WASHER PUMP REPLACEMENT(1) Remove 3 screws holding reservoir to drivers

    fender (Fig. 6)

    (2) Disconnect hose from pump(s) (Fig. 6).

    (3) Dra in w asher reservoir.

    (4) U sing a deep socket, remove fi l ter nut(s) from

    bottom inside reservoir and remove pump.

    (5) Reverse the removal procedure to instal l a new

    pump(s).

    WIPER MOTOR REPLACEMENT

    REMOVAL

    (1) Remove wiper arms by l i ft ing up wiper arm and

    slide tap out.

    (2) Remove 6 screws holding t he cowl gr ille (Fig. 7).

    (3) D is con n ect w a s h e r h os e a n d s et cow l g r il le

    aside.

    (4) Remove 5 bolts holding wiper linkage assembly.

    (5) Turn l inkage over an d remove the nut holding

    (6) Remove 3 screws holding motor to l inkage (Fig.

    8) and remove motor.

    INSTALLATION

    (1) I n s t a l l m ot or a n d t i gh t e n s cr ew s t o 5-7 Nm

    (44-62 in. lbs.).( 2 ) I n s t a l l c r a n k a r m t o m o t o r a n d t i g h t e n n u t t o

    10-12 Nm (88-106 in. lbs.)

    (3) Instal l l inkage assembly and t ighten screws to 8

    Nm (72 in. lbs.).

    (4 ) C o n n e c t w a s h e r h o s e t o c o w l g r i l l e a n d i n s t a l l

    grille.

    Continuous wipe.

    P a r k m od e w h i ch op er a t e s w h e n t h e r ea r w i pe r

    switch is turned off. R e a r w a s h e r w i t h 2 - 3 s w e e p s i n a n y o f t h e o t h e r

    operating modes.

    The rear wiper motor contains electronic controls to

    provide four operating modes. It receives signal cur-

    rents from the r ear w iper sw itch for t hese four modes.

    T h e r e a r w i p e r s w i t c h i s l o c a t e d i n t h e r i g h t h a n d

    switch pod and is supplied current when the ignition

    s w i t ch i s i n t h e O N p os it i on . Wh en t h e s w i t ch i s

    placed in the ON position current is supplied to the

    electronic motor controls. When the switch is placed

    in t he D ELAY position i t provides current to th e rear

    wiper motor electronic controls and t imer to control

    t h e p u ls e. Wh en t h e s w i t ch i s P U S H E D t o t h e w a s h

    position i t provides current to both the motor elec-

    t r on i cs a n d t h e r ea r w a s h e r p um p. Th e s w i t ch i s

    spring loaded in the wash position.

    The rear washer reservoir and pump are located on

    the left inner fender in the engine compartment. The

    pu m p i s f ed cu rr en t f rom t h e r ea r w i per s w it ch .

    DIAGNOSING REAR WIPER

    (1) Remove and inspect 20 amp fuse #9 in the fusepanel. Replace a s required.

    (2) Remove liftgate cover, refer to Rear Wiper Mo-

    tor Replacement.

    (3) Measure resistance between Rear Wiper motor

    connector terminal 3 and ground. Meter should read

    z e r o o h m s . I f n o t , r e p a i r o p e n t o s p l i c e i n bo d y h a r -

    ness.

    (4) Tu r n i g n it i on s w i t ch t o R U N a n d p la c e w i pe r

    s w i t ch i n WAS H . M ea s u r e v ol t a g e a t R ea r Wi pe r

    m ot o r con n e ct o r t e r m in a l 5. M et e r s h ou l d r e a d ba t -

    tery voltage. If not, go to step 6.

    (5 ) P l a c e w i p e r s w i t c h i n O N. M e a s u r e v o l t a g e a t

    Rear Wiper motor connector terminal 2. Meter should

    read battery voltage. If not, go to step 6.

    (6) Remove switch and reconnect below Instrument

    panel; ba ck probe sw itch connector, with ignition key

    in RU N position.

    (7) Measure volta ge a t switch connector t erminal 1.

    Meter should read battery voltage. If not, repair opento fuse #9.

    (8) P u sh s w it ch t o WAS H . M ea s u re v ol ta g e a t

    switch connector terminal 4. Meter should read bat-

    tery voltage. If OK, repair open to Rear Wiper Motor

    terminal 5. If not, replace switch.

    (9) M ov e s w i t c h t o O N. M ea s u r e v ol t a g e a t s w i t ch

    connector terminal 3. Meter should read battery volt-

    age. If OK, repair open to Rear Wiper motor terminal

    2. I f not, replace swit ch.

    (10) M ov e s w i t ch t o DE L AY. M ea s u r e v ol t a g e a t

    switch connector terminal 2. Meter should read bat-

    tery voltage. If OK, repair open to Rear Wiper motor

    terminal 4. If not, replace switch.

    DIAGNOSING REAR WASHERRefer t o Rea r Wiper/Wa sher Cir cuitr y

    (1) Tu r n i gn i t ion s w i t ch t o R U N a n d p la c e r ea r

    w iper/wa sher sw itch to ON. I f motor does not operat e

    check fuse #9 in the fuse panel.

    (2) U nplug Rea r Wa sher P ump connector.

    (3) Measure resistance at pump connector t erminal

    B (ignition switch off). Meter should read zero ohms.

    If n ot, repair open to ground.

    (4) Turn ign ition swit ch to RUN .

    (5) Measure voltage a t pump connector t erminal A,switch in WASH . Meter should read bat tery voltage.

    If OK, replace pump. If not, go to step 6.

    (6) Remove switch and reconnect below instrument

    p a n el . B a ck pr ob e s w i t ch con n ect or w i t h i gn i t ion

    s w i t ch i n R U N.

    (7) Measure volta ge a t switch connector t erminal 1.

    Meter should read battery voltage. If not, repair open

    to fuse #9.

    (8) Measure volta ge a t switch connector t erminal 4,

    switch in WASH . Meter should read bat tery voltage.

    If not, replace switch.

    WIPER BLADE REPLACEMENT(1) Lift t he w iper a rm a nd pla ce a 1/8 inch pin into

    the arm pin hole (Fig. 1).

    (2) Turn the release lever (Fig. 2), then pull blade

    from wiper arm pin.

    (3) Wh e n i n s t a l l in g t h e bl a d e, m a k e s u r e t h e r e -

    lease lever is not between the blade and arm.

    REAR WIPER MOTOR REPLACEMENT

    REMOVAL(1) Lift t he w iper a rm a nd pla ce a 1/8 inch pin into

    the arm pin hole (Fig. 1).

    (2) Remove the wiper arm assembly from the pivot

    pin by depressing the t ab (Fig. 3) an d pull ing stra ight

    out on wiper arm.

    (3) Remove motor retaining nut (Fig. 4).

    (4) Remove external bezel.

    (5) Remove 5 screws holding l i ftgate interior trim

    panel.

    (6) R e m ov e t h e t r im p a n el w i t h a w i d e f la t b la d e

    tool (Fig. 5).

    To aid in removal of the trim panel, start at

    the bottom of the panel.

    (7) Unplug the harness connector from the motor.

    (8) Remove 2 wiper motor mounting bolts.

    (9) Remove the wiper motor.

    INSTALLATION

    (1) Position the motor (Fig. 4) in the l i ftgate cavity

    w i t h t h e k n u r l e d d r i v e r p r o t r u d i n g t h r o u g h t h e h o l e

    i n t h e l i ft g a t e a n d t h e g a s k et .

    1-1.7 Nm (10-15 in. lbs.).

    (3) Connect the wiring harness.

    (4 ) I n s t a l l t h e be z e l a n d m o t o r r e t a i n i n g n u t (Fi g .

    3). Torque nut to 4-5.6 Nm (35-50 in. lbs.).

    (5) I n s t a l l t h e l i ft g a t e t r i m p a n e l .

    (6) Instal l the wiper arm assembly.

    The blade should be positioned as shown inFigure 6.

    REAR WASHER NOZZLETo r e m ov e t h e r e a r w a s h er n oz z le p u s h u p o n t h e

    nozzle (Fig. 7). There is a small t ang tha t wil l release.

    REAR WIPER SWITCH REPLACEMENT(1) Disconnect negative cable from th e ba ttery.

    (2) Remove ash tra y.

    (3) Remove 6 screws holding center cluster bezel

    (Fig. 8).

    (4) Remove center bezel.

    (5) Remove 2 screws holding dash pad located be-hind top of center bezel.

    (6) G ently pry defroster gri l le out of dash pa d.

    (7) U nplug sensors (i f equipped) and set defroster

    grille aside.

    (8) Remove 4 screws in defroster d uct opening hold-

    ing da sh pa d (Fig. 9).

    (9) Remove 3 screws above Instrument Panel clus-

    ter holding dash pad (Fig. 10).

    (10) Open glove box and remove 2 screws holding

    d a s h p a d .

    (11) Remove dash pad pul l ing up to unsnap end c l ips.

    (12) With drivers door open remove 1 screw from

    the side of the lower trim panel (Fig. 11).

    (13) Remove 4 screws holding the steering column

    cover (Fig. 12).

    (14) R e m ov e 1 s cr e w f r om bot t o m of l ow e r t r i m

    panel and pull panel off. There is also a cl ip holding

    t h e p a n e l t o t h e i n s t r u m en t p a n e l.

    (15) Remove 6 screws holding knee blocker.

    (16) Remove steering column retaining nuts.

    (17) Remove 3 screws holding bott om of bezels (Fig.13).

    (18) Remove 2 screws holding top of end and switch

    pod bezels (Fig. 14). The end bezel can now be re-

    moved.

    pod bezel (Fig. 15).

    (20) R e m ov e 3 s cr e w s h ol d in g r i g h t h a n d s i d e o f

    swit ch pod bezel (Fig. 16).

    (21) Pull switch pod bezel out far enough to remove

    switch connectors. Disconnect connectors from each

    switch pod and remove bezel (Fig. 17).

    (22) Remove required switch attaching screws and

    switch.

    (23) R e v er s e t h e r e m ov a l p r oce d ur e s t o i n s t a l l anew switch. Tighten st eering column reta ining nut s

    to 105 in. lbs.

    REAR WASHER PUMP REPLACEMENTTh e w a s h e r p u mp f o r t h e r e a r w i n d ow i s l o ca t e d

    n e x t t o t h e f r o n t w a s h e r p u m p o n t h e w a s h e r r e s e r -

    voir in the engine compartment. For replacement re-

    fer to the front washer pump replacement procedure.
