A hidden treasure –The Ruidoso Downs Racehorse Hall of FameBy Eugene HeathmanEditor

The Ruidoso Downs Racehorse Hall of Fame – home to building racing history one horse, one trainer and one jockey at a time – is dedicated to edu-cating the public about horseracing and preserving racing’s history. It features a collection of very rare pieces of racing memorabilia located at Ruidoso Downs Racetrack.

Offering up a superb collection of racing memorabilia and racing history lives throughout the collection, The Ru-idoso Downs Racehorse Hall of Fame inductees are people and horses who have had a profound impact on their sport. Museum Curator Ty Wyant said, “Even non-racing folks who appreciate history are amazed at the interactive kiosks that present some of the great-est races and stories in racing history as well as information on each of the members of the hall of fame.”

Every year only one owner/breed-er, one trainer, one jockey and one horse are enshrined. Induction ceremo-nies are held at the track in late June.

“It is a very select group, indeed and there are very few museums like this in the country, especially at race tracks.” Wyant said.

Inducted into the 2013 Ruidoso Downs Racehorse Hall of Fame are:

Bobby Cox:Two-time champion owner Bobby

Cox along with major stakes winner and leading sire Corona Cartel will be hon-ored as 2013 inductees to the Ruidoso Downs Racehorse Hall of Fame. Cox has been a major force as both an owner and a breeder in quarter horse racing at the highest level.

Corona Cartel:Corona Cartel impacted quarter

horse racing as both a racehorse and a sire. On the track, Corona Cartel raced to the Grade 1 wins in both the Los Alamitos Million and the Kindergar-ten on his way to career earnings of $517,142. A son of Holland Ease and Ruidoso Downs Racehorse Hall of Fame member Corona Chick, he re-cently surpassed the $40,000,000 mark in progeny earning.

Trainer James McAr-thur, 2013 inductee into the Ruidoso Downs Racehorse Hall of Fame. McAr-thur has been one of Quarter Horse racing’s most impor-tant trainers for four decades.

Trainer James McArthur:McArthur has been one of quarter

horse racing most important trainers for four decades. His stable has been pri-marily based in New Mexico, however he has also found success in California. Up until recently, his wife Donna ran their operation based at Los Alami-tos Race Course. McArthur also won the 1984 All American Futurity with Eastex. McArthur’s other major Ruidoso Downs stakes wins include the All Ameri-can Derby, Rainbow Futurity, Rainbow Derby and Kansas Futurity.

Jockey Roy Brooks:

Brooks defi nes longevity. He turned 71-years-old in August and has won the latest two runnings of the Heritage Place Derby at Remington Park. He won the 2011 Heritage Place Derby aboard Capo De Capi and the 2012 edition with Priceless Feature. Then,

after winning this year’s Heritage Place Derby, he came to Ruidoso Downs and rode Priceless Feature in the $903,000 Rainbow Derby. They held the lead un-til the fi nal jump when champion Ochoa caught them and they fi nished second by a head. Less than two weeks later, Brooks celebrated his 71st birthday.

The Ruidoso Downs Racehorse Hall of Fame is located on the second

fl oor at Ruidoso Downs and located near the entrance of the All American Turf Club. “We also have the facilities available for parties, educational events and business meet-ings, anything you can imagine. The hall of fame is for the people to enjoy and we wel-come the opportunity to host events among horse racing greatest legends,” Wyant said. Admission is free.

All donations to the Racehorse Hall of Fame are tax deductible and help pro-mote the Hall of Fame’s mission.

The recipient of the Sam Thomp-son Memorial Jockey Award, presented annually to a Quarter Horse jockey for his character on and off the racetrack for 2013, is G.R. Carter Jr. An award cer-emony for Carter, Jr .will be at Ruidoso Downs, Sunday, Sept. 1, the day of the All American Derby.

The award honors the memory of Sam Thompson, a jockey who died Christmas Day in 2008 at age 36 from injuries suffered in a racing accident five days earlier at Los Alamitos. Nota-bly, Thompson won the Los Alamitos Million Futurity in 1997 with champion This Snow Is Royal and 1999 with champion Corona Kool. Thompson also mounted racing champions such as; champions Tiny First Effort, Corona Cash and Deelish. Thompson won the 2007 Go Man Go Handicap on cham-pion FDD Dynasty, the 2006 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity on Tac It Like A Man and the 2006 Rainbow Futurity on Big

Time Hero. Thompson was awarded the Special Achievement and Jockey award by the PCQHRA in 2000.

The Thompson award winner is selected by a nationwide vote of Quarter Horse jockeys and is presented by Speedhorse magazine in affiliation with the Jockeys’ Guild.

Carter, 45, began his jockey career in 1984 and is the 10-time record break-ing national champion Quarter Horse jockey. Race horses ridden by Carter have earned more than $62 million, an-other record for a Quarter Horse jockey.

On July 6, Carter made Quarter Horse racing history at Ruidoso Downs becoming the all-time leader in lifetime starts in races recognized by AQHA. The milestone occurred during the trials of the Rainbow Derby, eclipsing the record of American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame jockey Danny Cardoza.

Carter is a two-time All American Futurity champion at Ruidoso Downs, the first on Falling In Loveagain in 1998 and again on Stolis Winner in 2008.

Early morning line refl ects deep All American fi elds

The early morning line for the $2.6 million All American Futurity and the $2.8 million All American Derby refl ects the exceptionally deep quality in each of the 440-yard races.

The All American Futurity on La-bor Day is horseracing’s richest race for 2-year-olds in North America while the All American Derby on Sunday, Sept. 1 will offer the largest purse in Quarter Horse racing history.

These preliminary odds were com-piled before the post position draw or the jockey for the fi nals was declared.

Ruidoso Downs’ racing secretary and morning-line maker Robby Junk has installed the undefeated Especially Tres as the 7-2 favorite for the All American Futurity with Ruidoso and Rainbow derbies winner Wicked Courage the 3-1 favorite in his quest to sweep the three Grade 1 derbies held dur-ing the Ruidoso Downs summer season.

Jim Pitts’ Especially Tres is unbeaten from four starts, including the Sam Houston Futurity, and her combined margin of victory is 11 lengths. The Blane Wood-trained fi lly was the second-fast-est qualifi er on the fi rst of two days of trials with a 21.191 time for 440 yards while winning by three-and-one-half lengths.

Hes Relentless was the top qualifi er on the fi rst day of trials and he is the second choice

on the early morning line at 9-2 odds. The Amber Bair-trained colt turned in 21.148-second qualifying time. Owned by R.D. Hubbard, Tom Maher and Johnny Cope, Hes Relentless was sec-ond by a nose in the Grade 1, $1 million Heritage Place Futurity before coming to Ruidoso Downs and being supplemented for $50,000 to enter the All American Futurity trials.

The remainder of the fi nalists and their early morning-line odds are Houdini (5-1), Reagal Eagle (5-1), Wagon Tales (6-1), Handsome Jack Flash (8-1), You N How Many More (8-1), Wagon Full Of Gold (8-1), Skuze Pleeze (12-1) and Fatal Policy (15-1).

Andrew Smith’s Wicked Courage will need to rebound from a second-

place run in his All American Derby trial if he is going to become the fourth horse to sweep the three Grade 1 der-bies at Ruidoso Downs. He was second to fastest-qualifi er Bon Accord in their trial and Wicked Courage scored the second-fastest qualifying mark.

Bon Accord covered the quarter mile in 20.977 while Wicked Courage was clocked in 21.164.

A 34-1 odds in his trial, Bon Ac-cord is 5-1 on the early morning line when he makes his stakes debut in the All American Derby for trainer Juan Aleman.

The Magic Dash, trained by Sleepy Gilbreath, is the 4-1 second-choice after winning his trial by three quarters of a length for his second from his latest three outs.

The early morning-line odds for the remainder of the fi eld are LouisanaCar-tel (5-1), Tayte Me Down (8-1), Point Break Dash (8-1), Feature Hero (8-1), Vancouver Moon (10-1), Elisas Secret (10-1) and Wonderboy (30-1).

Racing runs on a Friday through Monday schedule at Ruidoso Downs. There is always free parking and free general admission.

‘JACK From Grit to Glory’Book signing at Ruidoso Downs

Author Chris Kotulak will be at Ruidoso Downs on Friday to sign his recent release “JACK From Grit To Glory,” a biography of hall of fame trainer Jack Van Berg.

The signing will be in front of the gift shop from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.

The most notable horse trained by Van Berg was hall of famer Alysheba, Horse of the Year in

1988. Alysheba won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Clas-sic. He retired with a record $6,679,242 in earnings.

Alysheba’s owners Dorothy and Pam Schau-bauer of Midland, Texas have a strong connec-tion to Ruidoso Downs. Doro-

thy’s husband and

Pam’s father, Clarence, have campaigned many great horses at Ruidoso Downs since the 1950s and won the fi rst Rainbow Futurity with Double Queen in 1964. Clarence Scharbauer is a member of the Ruidoso Downs Racehorse Hall of Fame.

Van Berg’s connection to quarter horse racing comes through his close friend, hall of fame trainer Blane Schvaneveldt. Van Berg often visited Los Alamitos when Schvaneveldt had a horse running in a major stakes race. They would laugh, hold court, tell stories (probably with some exaggeration) and people would quip: “They’ve forgotten more about racehorses than everyone else has learned.”

Kotulak is familiar to horse racing fans through his work with the horseracing television network TVG as an on-air personality. His horseracing history goes back to his teenaged years when he worked on the backside at Ak-Sar-Ben, the track at which Van Berg won 19-straight training titles. Kotulak now works at Remington Park and this is his fi rst book.

“I’ve always looked forward to coming to Ru-idoso for work or just as a fan. It’s a special place,” said Kotulak. “I have a lot of friends there and am anxious to visit with them again.”

1988. Alysheba won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Clas-sic. He retired with a record $6,679,242 in earnings.
