Dear Corporators, Customers, Employees, and Friends:

This year, we’re talking about what really matters: Your experience.

As we put together this year’s Annual Report, we thought about what made the year challenging, rewarding, and successful. We tallied the numbers of first-time home buyer mortgages, commercial loans, community development projects, grants awarded, and jars of PB&J donated, but we also simply paused to reflect on why we continue to find such overwhelming success. We talked about the stories behind the numbers and the singular moments that impacted each of us, personally and professionally. Those stories revealed a common thread: the little moments create something bigger. Experience… for you, for our employees, and for Maine’s communities. That experience is what matters to us at Bangor Savings Bank.

So, we approached this year’s Annual Report a bit differently. While we’re proud to share the Bank’s notable activities and accolades, what truly matters is our impact on you – and that comes from the inside out. We believe that our exceptional customer experience and strong reputation amongst our peers is a direct result of our employees. They drive our success through their engagement with customers who, in turn, become advocates in the community and help drive our business. This recipe for success is what drives our investment in our employees. They remain our most valuable asset, which is why we made the decision to pay an above-market minimum starting hourly rate of $13 per hour and why we remain committed to their complete well-being. Our employees are the foundation for our success; and in recognition of our efforts to establish and foster an outstanding workplace environment, they once again helped Bangor Savings Bank be named a Best Places to Work in Maine in 2015.

Throughout this report, we tell the stories of employees; who they are as people and how the smallest moments – like coaching a child’s hockey practice or finding a rare antique – add up to something bigger.

Thank you for allowing us to share our experiences with you, and for trusting us with your business.

Sincerely,

Robert S. Montgomery-RicePresident and Chief Executive Officer

Your moment is our moment.

Buying your first home is a moment you never forget. Your experience getting to that milestone matters. To you. To your family. And to us. As the number one mortgage lender in Maine, we provided $235 million in home loans last year alone. That’s a big number. We are also proud to be the leading lender to first-time home buyers through the Maine State Housing Authority for 8 years running. From our first chat about your home-buying dreams to the moment you close on your loan, our client advisors are responsive and thoughtful about your entire experience. It’s all about the little moments, like keeping in close contact throughout your lending process. And it’s the bigger picture, too, like thinking about the ultimate impact of our process and our mortgage products. Every moment matters.

Our business is your business.

Entrepreneurs know that launching or growing a small business in Maine comes with challenges. And large commercial clients know they need a lender who can be both a visionary and an ally. For the fifth year running, we were named the top Small Business Administration lender in Maine. Last year, we proudly provided $378 million in new loans to Maine businesses.

Our commercial team continues to be at the forefront of making large-scale projects a reality, like the redevelopment of the Pepperell Mill in Biddeford and the expanded operations of Gifford’s Ice Cream. And while we know that our financing capacity and local expertise have a direct impact on your business’ success, our commercial banking products and services matter, too. By supporting more than 3,000 business customers with payroll services and 2,700 with merchant services, what matters are both the day-to-day experiences and the make-or-break decisions. Your business matters.

Our communities are our spirit.

To us, the growth and success of our communities matter. We believe we have an obligation to actively contribute to the vitality and prosperity of Maine and its communities. Each year, we commit to far exceed the federal requirements of the Community Reinvestment Act. It’s why we financed 16 community development projects, totaling more than $38 million, last year alone. This is bigger than just meeting a requirement. It’s knowing that our outreach, investments, and activities will result in greater things.

We’re proud to have earned our fourth consecutive FDIC CRA rating of “Outstanding” in 2015 and to be a leader in lending, investment, and service. Whether it’s financing an affordable housing project for families and seniors or an economic development project that brings stable jobs to a distressed area of Maine, empowering our community is at the heart of our core values. Our impact matters.

Our impact is our priority.

Sometimes a small gift, like donating a jar of peanut butter, is actually a very big deal. We’re proud to say that everyone at Bangor Savings Bank believes that giving is a big part of who we are. It’s core to our culture and is a commitment we fully embrace.

Last year, we continued to give in a variety of ways. As one example, our annual Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive collected more than 12,000 jars of PB&J to donate to local food pantries across Maine.

Through our Corporate Giving and Bangor Savings Bank Foundation combined, we gave more than $1.8 million

to community initiatives across the state. Our corporate donations included a $200,000 grant to The Foundation for Maine’s Community Colleges, a statewide organization that works to ensure that Maine’s seven community colleges have the resources they need for access to education and student success. Giving back matters.

“It’s the little things that matter to me, as a Mom – just hearing my son laugh and feeling the joy that comes from our time together. It’s the little things with our customers, too – creating meaningful interactions and making sure they have a great banking experience.”

Your experience is our inspiration.

The experience that we provide to you matters deeply. It’s central to our vision. And that’s powerful. It drives what we do every day, from the investments we make in things like online lending, mobile deposit, and free ATMs worldwide to maintaining a statewide branch network and a live Bangor Support call center in Maine – we do it all to make your experience positive and even memorable! The trust we build, the successes we help create, and the smiles we share are what inspire us. Every phone call, every visit, every interaction with you matters.

And, we are honored that for the second year in a row we were ranked “Highest Customer Satisfaction with Retail Banking in the New England Region” for 2016 by J.D. Power. We remain inspired to show you that your experience matters.

“I love that my job is all about the latest banking technology, and how we help customers be as efficient with their time as possible. Yet I love spending my free time collecting antiques. There’s something magical about holding on to a little piece of a bygone time, while the world around us moves so fast.”

Your independence is our future.

As more customers seek the convenience of a self-service banking experience through mobile tools, we’ve stepped up our technology even more. This year, we worked hard to deliver new mobile and online banking solutions that capitalize on the native capabilities of your mobile devices. While we’re leading the evolution in Maine, as the first local bank to offer all three major mobile wallet solutions – Android, Apple and Samsung Pay – we’re doing it with a focus on your security.

We’ve invested in the most innovative tools that make paying bills, sending money to your kids, or depositing checks even easier and safer, leveraging secure technology like Bangor Mobile App’s Eyeprint ID and Touch ID functionality. Your ease of access to us matters.

We never tire of providing a grant to a community nonprofit. And what makes it truly special is that our customers care as much as we do. This past year, The Bangor Savings Bank Foundation provided 155 grants to community nonprofits throughout Maine. Through one of our signature giving programs, Community Matters More, we share in the joy of giving with Mainers who care enough to cast tens of thousands of votes for their favorite nonprofits.

We once again proudly awarded $100,000 to 68 Maine-based nonprofit organizations as a result of Community Matters More. One of this year’s $5,000 winners was York County Shelter Programs. Thank you to the many Mainers who took a moment to cast a vote and share the experience of making a difference, year after year.

For the fiscal year ending March 31, 2016, the Company earned net income of $23.01 million, up $0.64 million, or 2.86%, over the prior year. Due to the strength of our core business, the Company delivered a strong financial performance against the backdrop of regulatory changes and rapidly evolving customer preferences, opening more than 30,000 new core deposit accounts, including over 3,000 new business accounts.

Total loan production during the year was $785.82 million. Over the past five years, the Company originated $3.54 billion in cumulative total loan production despite the economy’s impact on loan demand and on potential borrowers’ credit. Net loans on the balance sheet were $2.28 billion at fiscal year-end, a 7.93% increase. Total residential mortgage loan production was $234.8 million, and commercial and small business loans outstanding increased by $108.11 million, or 10.25%.

The Company’s assets grew to $3.32 billion, an increase of 5.23% compared to one year ago. Customer deposits and repurchase agreements grew by $150.23 million, or 5.96%, totaling $2.67 billion at year-end. Off the balance sheet, assets in the Wealth Management Group grew to $2.5 billion at year-end. Non-interest income for the year was up 9.71%, to $43.48 million, driven by double-digit growth in card services and payroll services, and mortgage services. Notably, at year-end, more than 3,000 business clients

used the Company’s payroll services and 2,700 used merchant card processing services.

The Company continued to focus on maintaining sound credit quality while working proactively with our noncurrent borrowers. Net charge-offs for the year were just 0.05%, and at year-end, nonperforming loans were 0.46% of the loan portfolio. This figure remains notably favorable relative to peer banks: as of March 31, 2016, Maine peer banks had nonperforming loans averaging 0.93% of total loans, and national peer banks averaged nonperforming loans of 1.09%.

Capital levels continued to be strong as total retained earnings, or capital, grew by $20.35 million, or 5.88%, to $366.53 million.

The Company continues to be categorized as well-capitalized by our regulators, and total capital in excess of the level required to be well-capitalized (relative to risk-weighted assets) increased 3.28% during the year to $128.08 million.

With a sound and growing balance sheet, strong loan production, and healthy core business operations and earnings, the Company remains well-positioned for continued investments in customer experience that will drive sustained profitability and growth.
