Issue No: 10 July 2nd 2019
This week brings the end of term 2. I would like to thank parents, community members, teachers, school support staff and the children of Boyanup for their fantastic efforts again throughout this term. Last day of school is this Friday, 5th July. We wish you all a safe and relaxing holiday and look forward to seeing everybody back for next term. Teachers commence Term 3 on Monday 22nd July for their School Development Day – this will be a Pupil Free Day.
Term 3 for students commences on Tuesday 23rd July.
Semester 1 Reports
Student reports will be sent home to families on Tuesday 2nd July. Please make sure you receive your child’s report and please feel free to see your child’s classroom teacher if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s progress at school.
The information contained in this report provides a summary of your child’s achievement, attitude, behaviour and effort. Below is an outline of the grading system being used and is determined by your child’s achievement within each learning area being reported as Excellent, High, Satisfactory, Limited and Very Low. Judgements are made against the expected learning outcomes of your child’s year level and are in line with the Western Australian Curriculum.
A Excellent: The student demonstrates excellent achievement of what is expected for this year level.
B High: The student demonstrates high achievement of what is expected for this year level.
C Satisfactory: The student demonstrates satisfactory achievement of what is expected for this year level.
D Limited: The student demonstrates limited achievement of what is expected for this year level.
E Very Low: The student demonstrates very low achievement of what is expected for this year level.
Your child’s demonstration of effort within each Learning Area and overall attitude, behaviour and effort are reported using the scale: Consistently, Often, Sometimes and Seldom.

Our You Can Do It! focus this fortnight is Problem Solving. A problem is a worry, question, or distressing
situation that needs some sort of action to sort it out. Sometimes when we experience a problem we are not
sure what the right thing to do is, or we are not sure we can manage on our own. It is important to use our
brains to help us think carefully about what we can do to solve a problem before we take action. We call
this Thinking First. This helps us to control the way we express our emotions and understand how our
actions might affect the way other people feel.
On Thursday 20th June, the students at Boyanup Primary School participated in a range of
activities to raise awareness about the importance of sustainability. Students had the
opportunity to discuss important environmental topics and engaged with guest speakers who
spoke to the children about their areas of expertise. Students enjoyed planting native tree and
shrub seedlings, which were kindly donated by Boyanup Botanicals, with their friends and
families. These seedlings will be nurtured and cared for at school and once they are more
established, they will be planted out within the community.
Thank you to everyone, including P&C members, parents, families, staff and students for
making this day a wonderful success. Thank you also to our guest speakers; Joeri Mak and
Peter Carr - Forest Products Commission, Kit Prendergast - Native bee scientist, Brian Smith -
Boyanup Fire Brigade and Doreen Jones - Wildlife Care Bunbury. Your enthusiasm and the
knowledge you shared was greatly appreciated and well received by all of our students. Last,
but certainly not least, thank you to our on-site environmental guru, Marion Lewis! As always,
we thank you for your dedication and commitment to providing these opportunities for our
school.

Sustainability Day
BOYANUP PRIMARY SCHOOL - Your Child, Your School, Your Community Page 3
Here are the thoughts from some of our students from Sustainability Day;
Trinity Cahill – Kindy
I got to hold a possum. He was eating a biscuit on my lap and he didn’t
give it back to the lady - wasn’t he cheeky?
Sophie Niclair - Pre Primary
The possums were fluffy and they had curly tails. We counted the rings
on the logs. The man told us it’s good to burn the bush.
Delilah Pearce and Myla Richards - Year 1
We thought it was awesome! We learnt about fire and bees. If a bee stings a
person it dies. Fire is a part of sustainability because it burns down the trees
and then they grow back.
Pippa De Graaf - Year 2
I learnt how old trees are by how many rings they have.
I really had fun because we were learning.
Erin O’Leary - Year 3
Sustainability means that you can use something lots of times without it running out. I really liked the animal
session because there was a snake and I learnt how to hold a lizard so it doesn’t bite you.
Seth ‘R’ Hetherington - Year 4
I thought it was excellent. When we were talking about natural
resources, like trees, I learnt about how we can use them now and
in the future. We need to be careful with our resources because
some can’t be replaced.
Aidan Mak - Year 5
I liked seeing Doreen from Wildlife Care Bunbury…we have taken injured animals to her before. I also
enjoyed the Forest Products Commission (aka my dad) because I found the machines they use to cut down
trees really interesting and it was fun building with the wood at lunchtime.
Pru Ugle - Year 6
I enjoyed all of the sessions. My favourite one was the bee lady because I
found out that bees were alive at the same time as dinosaurs. Bees are
important because they pollinate the plants and vegetables we eat and
without bees we wouldn’t have food.

The Boyanup St John Ambulance recently visited our Kindergarten, as part of the Kindy Ambulance Familiarisation program. A big 'Thank you' to Mr Craig Bourne, who made the visit very interactive and educational for the children. We learnt about oxygen masks and pulse meters, and all children had a go at laying on the stretchers. Mr Bourne said this really helps take away the fear of going into an Ambulance, should the situation ever arise.
The Boyanup St John Ambulance has now installed a defibrillator at the Boyanup Primary School. In the event of an emergency, please call 000 and advise the location of your nearest defibrillator. You will then receive the code to open the secure box. There are several defibrillators located in Boyanup, all donated through our local Ambulance branch: at the Boyanup General Store, the Post Office, Meadowbrook Estate, the Ambulance Depo, the Bowling Club, the Chemist and now at the Boyanup Primary School.
Interm Swimming Lessons will be held Week 3 & 4 of Term 3, 2019.
