Growing in Grace

a comprehensive children’s music curriculum

PLEASE NOTE: Purchasing this curriculum grants the purchaser a license to print copies for students and teachers of ONE choir. If multiple choirs are using this curriculum, an additional curriculum CD should be purchased for each choir. Please do not reproduce these CDs and share with others. The heart of Growing in Grace is the music. The songs appearing in each unit have been carefully written to ensure they are developmentally appropriate for the child, both theologically and musically. With understandable texts, singable melodies, and interesting accompaniments, these songs will help each child develop his or her natural singing skills, increase in musical knowledge, and grow spiritually.

The theme, Choosing God’s Way, is rooted in Psalm 46:10. Musical activities guide younger children in making good choices, leading to a meaningful, healthy relationship with God and with one another. Children learn to take time to know God and His Word, grow in God’s likeness, and show God’s love to others.

As an added bonus for the Spring Semester, you will find the theme song, “Be Still and Know,” to use for review or to teach to your children for the first time. Song Teaching Steps, Choosing God’s Way Theme Poster, Psalm 46:10 Chant Activity, and Pray and Listen KIDPage are located in a folder titled Choosing God’s Way Theme Materials. These materials are included to help support the theme through the Spring Semester and may be used at any time during the semester. The theme-related KIDPage is suggested for use with early arrivers in Sessions 1 and 2.

This curriculum package includes two CDs with demonstration and accompaniment recordings, abundant teaching materials, and colorful visuals. Song Teaching Steps offer easy-to-follow instructions and activities for groups of all sizes. Additional resources are available online at www.growing-in-grace.com.

1. Experience steady beat.• Have children form a circle and sit on the floor.

• Model the steady beat by patting your legs. Invite the children to join you in keeping the steady beat while listening to Demo 1.

Teaching TipHelp children feel the steady beat in § time by patting two big beats per measure.

• Play Demo 1 again, this time keeping a steady beat by alternately patting legs then snapping fingers.

• Play a passing game by having the children copy what you do. Pretend to pick something up from the floor in front of you and pass it to your right. Say Pick up, pass, pick up, pass as you perform the passing motions.

First Grade TipPair younger children with older children to help everyone pass efficiently.

• Distribute a beanbag or rhythm stick to each child.

• Practice the “pick up, pass” pattern very slowly until the children are able to participate at the speed of the recording.

• Play the passing game with Demo 1.

2. Discover names and attributes of God. • Explain that this song teaches about who God is and why we should

worship Him. Have the children pretend to be detectives and listen for clues about God.

• Play Demo 1, and have children listen for names of God. (God, Creator, Father, Spirit, Son)

• Distribute Student Pages.

• Ask them to look at the title. Have a volunteer tell how God is described in the title. (worthy of worship)

Teaching TipChildren remember best when more than one learning mode is used. Ask children to locate each pattern (sight) and then circle the recurring pattern (tactile).

• Play Demo 1. Cue them to sing each time God, Creator, worthy of worship occurs.

3. Complete teaching Section A (meas. 5-12). • Echo sing the remaining phrases in Section A (meas. 7-8 and 11-12).

• Sing measures 5-12 with Demo 1. Pause the recording. Ask children to follow their music while they listen to the rest of the song and decide if this section of music repeats. (yes, meas. 22-29)

• Sing measures 5-12 then measures 22-29, and ask if the two sections are identical. (no) Ask what is different. (The melody of to You our voices we raise moves down the second time.)

• Echo sing to You our voices we raise in measures 28-29. Then sing the “new” Section A (meas. 22-29).

• Play Demo 1, having the children sing each Section A and do a pat-snap pattern to the steady beat during Section B (meas. 13-21).

4. Teach Section B (meas. 13-20).• Point to AH, EH, and OO Vowel Visuals one at a time.

• Point to the mouth shape on each visual as you pronounce the vowels. Encourage children to shape their mouths accordingly as they speak each vowel back to you.

• Say Alleluia, pointing to appropriate Vowel Visuals on each syllable of the word: AH-lEH-lOO-yAH.

• Echo speak the text for Section B in two-measure segments, having the children concentrate on proper pronunciation of vowels. Ask them to find other words with AH, EH, and OO vowel sounds. (AH—all, are, done, love, Father, Son; EH—help; OO—You, You’ve ).

• Have step bells and mallet available.

GUIDING CHILDREN• Distribute Fish Bowl Melodies 1 KIDPage and pencils to the children.• Explain that melodies can move by stepping up or down (line to adjacent space or space to adjacent line),

skipping up or down (skipping from line to the next line or space to the next space), or staying on the same line or space.

• Show examples of each by placing fish-shaped crackers on the staff on Fish Bowl Melodies 2 KIDPage and playing each example on step bells. (NOTE: Pitches don’t have to be exact from staff to step bells. Show a step by moving from one bell to the neighboring bell up or down, show a skip by playing one bell then skipping one bell up or down, show same notes by playing the same note twice.)

1. Introduce the game.• Have children place their markers on the START space.

• Decide who will go first.

• Explain that they will take turns tossing the Game Cube and moving the number of spaces indicated.

• Open a Bible to each of the following scripture references, and discuss the events of Easter as pictured on the gameboard.

OptionOpen a Bible to Matthew 21, and leave it open there while you tell the story of the first Easter, summarized in the following bullet points.

° Triumphal Entry—Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey as many people lined the streets, placing palm branches and coats on the ground to line the road as a sign of honor and respect for Jesus. (See Matthew 21:1-9.)

° The Last Supper—On the night before the crucifixion, Jesus and the disciples observed the Jewish Passover meal, which He transformed into a time to remember that Jesus died on the cross for us. (See Matthew 26:26-30.)

° Jesus praying in the garden while disciples are sleeping—After the Last Supper, Jesus took the disciples with Him to the garden. He asked them to stay alert and keep watch while He prayed, but they fell asleep. (See Matthew 26:36-46.)

° Judas betraying Jesus—While Jesus was still in the garden, Judas, one of the disciples who had made a deal with the chief priests to help them arrest Jesus, came with some soldiers. He identified Jesus for them by kissing Him on the cheek. (See Matthew 26:14-16.)

° Jesus before Pilate—The Roman governor of Judea listened to accusations against Jesus brought by the Jewish leaders but didn’t find Him guilty of any crime; however, Pilate gave in to the demands of the priests and people and sentenced Jesus to die. (See Matthew 27:11-26.)

° Jesus carrying the cross up the hill to Calvary. (See John 19:17.)

° The Crucifixion—Jesus was placed on a cross where He died between two thieves. A man named Joseph from Arimathea offered his own new tomb as a burial place for Jesus. (See Matthew 27:33-61.)

° The Resurrection—Jesus arose from the dead early on Sunday morning. Mary Magdalene and Mary were the first people to discover the empty tomb. (See Matthew 28:1-7.)

° Lily—This flower is a present-day symbol of Easter that represents hope, joy, and life.

SMALL-GROUP ACTIVITYEaster Journey Game will help children learn the story of the first Easter.

MATERIALS NEEDED• Easter Journey Gameboard• Easter Journey Game Cube• Game tokens, such as buttons, coins,

or small, round candy pieces.• Bible marked at Matthew 21, 26, 27,

and 28, and John 19:17.

PREPARATION• Print and prepare the gameboard.• Read the passages referenced in each

bullet point to review the events of the Easter story.

2. Play the game.• Have children take turns tossing the Game Cube and moving their tokens on

the gameboard.

• Ask them to follow the directions on the space where their marker lands. Play then moves to the next player. If their space has no directions, play moves to the next player.

• Declare the winner to be the first person to reach the FINISH space near the empty tomb and lily.

• Repeat the game as time permits.

• Display eight Energizer Prompts.

• Play Demo 9, and guide children to perform each movement for 16 beats.

Vocalize.

• Display four Vocal Exploration Visuals and the Vowel Visuals.

• Let children choose a vowel from the Vowel Visuals and move their voices up and down according to the direction of the lines.

• Have them vocalize as high as possible to extend their range.

“God Is Always There”3. Teach Section B (meas. 13-20).

• Echo sing Section B in two-measure then four-measure phrases.

• Help children locate Section B in their music by finding the green highlighted section.

• Sing all of Section B without accompaniment.

“We Are the Church”3. Teach Section B and the Ending (meas. 13-23).

• Point to Rhythm Sticks Pattern 2, and have children perform the rhythm.

• Sing We are the church in measure 18 for the children, having them tap Rhythm Sticks Pattern 2 before you sing.

• Ask if this We are the church phrase is the same as or different from the two We are the church phrases in Section A. (different)

Teaching TipSing We are the church from Section A if the children need to reminded of how that melody sounds.

• Echo sing We are the church in measures 18 and 22, tapping Rhythm Sticks Pattern 2 before you sing.

• Echo sing measures 13-18 on loo in three phrases.

• Sing all three stanzas (meas. 13-19) with text.

• Have children locate the repeat sign with the first and second ending in measure 19.

• Ask them where the music will repeat. (back to meas. 2)

• Explain that they will take the first and second ending after Stanza 1 and after Stanza 2, but, after Stanza 3, they will skip to the third ending in measure 20 to sing the final We are the church.

• Sing the entire song with piano accompaniment or Track 17, using the Melody Map as needed.

“Be Still and Know”• Review the choreography.

• Sing the entire song and perform choreography with piano accompaniment or Track 23.

“Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee”1. Sing the hymn.

• Distribute Student Pages.

• Play Demo 13, and sing Stanza 1. Stop the recording at the end of Stanza 1.

2. Explain the meaning of the text.

• Explain that this hymn is a song of joy and praise to God. The author, Henry Van Dyke, uses things in nature to express that God will take care of us, so we should praise Him.

• Sing Stanza 1 with piano accompaniment or Track 24.

Closing• Read Ephesians 2:22.

• Discuss that God wants to live (“dwell”) in all of us. Explain that we need to ask Jesus to come into our hearts to live in us.

• Share prayer requests, and pray, thanking God for sending His Son to die for us.
