T he Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce’s mission

is to help its member businesses grow and thrive. This mission was at the forefront of all Chamber operations 15 years ago when I became a member. The same is true today. The Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce helps its member businesses grow

by providing networking opportunities, educational

Mission:

The Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce builds alliances among

its members by uniting business, industry, professionals, artists and

non-profit organizations.

The Chamber serves as a catalyst that creates a rich business climate

and improves the quality of life in the community.

The Chamber is devoted to

furthering the arts, humanities and welfare of the Central Bucks region.

and training programs and marketing /brand recognition benefits.

Networking with local area businesses via a chamber membership is the bedrock of all chamber operations. I have always told new or prospective members that if I or the chamber staff doesn’t know a certain company or person you’re interested in, we know someone who does. Effective networking not only includes looking for new customers but also means identifying new suppliers or consultants that you need to run your business. The chamber has numerous networking events that happen on an almost daily basis to include business card exchanges, business to business breakfasts, committee programs and the list goes on and on. Besides meeting a lot of new people, these events are a lot of fun too.

The educational and training opportunities found in the chamber are numerous. We have frequent educational seminars on subjects that are germane to today’s challenging business environment. For instance, we recently had a half day seminar, free to chamber members, that dealt with the intricacies of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Experts from local health insurance companies and law firms gave a great informational session – I learned more at that seminar about the ACA than I did in the prior three years since its passage. Other educational and training opportunities offered by the chamber include the Leadership Advancement Program, State of the County, State and Nation Breakfasts, the Business Growth Series and the Entrepreneurial Assistance Program. Take advantage of these educational assets to be the most well informed business person as possible. Remember the old saying: “knowledge is power”.

Marketing your business to potential customers is a specialty of the Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce. We have 2,000 members who are a captive audience for you to showcase your particular product or service. Whether it’s through sponsoring a chamber event or advertising in chamber publications like the popular W4 magazine, we can get your name out there for all our members to see. Chamber membership gets your business’ name in the annual chamber directory which I use to look up company contact information because I always use the rule “Chamber Members First” when hiring suppliers or consultants.

The Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce is an active force in our business community. We are sought after by many because we help businesses grow and be successful. Use your chamber membership and get involved to take advantage of the many programs and opportunities we offer. Your business will thank-you that you did !!

Membership ambassadors 2014This group of business leaders has represented the Chamber throughout 2013 and will continue to serve as Ambassadors throughout 2014. The Chamber’s Membership Ambassadors are an elite team of professionals who represent the Chamber, inviting businesses to reap the rewards of membership and guiding them on how they maximize their investment.

In 1982, Beverly m. miller, President of Stepping Up & Out, Inc., joined the Chamber. She pretty quickly became an integral part of the Chamber, involving herself, at one time or another, in almost every committee, project and programof the organization.

It wasn’t long until she became Vice President of Membership on the CBCC Board of Officers & Directors. Beverly directed over two decades of Membership Campaigns, brought hundreds of new members into the Chamber, and helped to shape many of the Chamber’s initiatives.

This summer, Beverly Miller passed away. But, her legacy remains. The Chamber is utilizing plans she already crafted and has comprised a very special team of Membership Ambassadors, who are recruiting new members in 2014 using the theme, “Stepping Up & Out,” in honor of Beverly Miller.

Chestnut Hill College and Studio Incamminati

C hestnut Hill College, highly regarded for its holistic approach to education, has reinstated its Art Studio major through

an innovative partnership with Studio Incamminati, School for Contemporary Realist Art. The joint Art Studio program offers students of both institutions the opportunity to combine a comprehensive liberal arts education with skills-based representational art training in order to develop rewarding careers - and lives - in the arts. With the return of the Art Studio major, students at both schools can pursue an accredited liberal arts degree from Chestnut Hill College while doing studio work under the tutelage of Studio Incamminati’s renowned professional artists. In addition, interested students can enhance their Bachelor of Arts degree by earning a Certificate of Proficiency with a fifth year of study at Studio Incamminati. The Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Studio will be available beginning with the fall 2013 semester. Both schools enjoy intersecting educational visions. Training in realist painting, which stresses learning to see the natural world, develops vital critical thinking and perceptual skills. These same skills lend themselves well to Chestnut Hill College’s commitment to academic excellence within the liberal arts experience. Both schools boast a dynamic

teaching environment in a supportive learning community – one that is inclusive and provides the avenues to achieve excellence. “Learning truly to see is the work of a lifetime,” CHC President Carol Jean Vale, SSJ, Ph.D. said. “At the heart of our mission is the belief that the right relationship with the universe, self, others and God is central to the experience of being human. We grow authentically as persons by learning ”to see” the other with a sharply honed perception that is nurtured by educating the mind, cultivated by heightening the

sensitivity of the heart, and gentled by engendering a receptivity of the spirit.” “We have the ideal partner in Chestnut Hill College,” said Studio Incamminati Executive Director Jay Pennie. “Like the College, we strive to prepare our students for life’s challenges. This new partnership enables both institutions to better serve those seeking a strong liberal arts education and rigorous fine arts training. Studio Incamminati’s program, grounded in the belief that technical mastery is a prelude for successful creative expression, is the perfect complement to Chestnut Hill’s broad-based curriculum.” W4

Tom Frank: An Uncommon Man Takes an Uncommon Path to Success

T om Frank is a very successful businessman. He owns ten McDonald’s restaurants, the Ramada New Hope

and Doylestown’s immensely popular Knight House and 86 West. And he has words of wisdom for business people struggling in this economy to start a business, maintain a business, launch a career, or just pay the bills. Save this and show it to your kids who have just graduated from high school or college. When they are looking to dip their toes into the river of adult life and responsibilities, Tom Frank’s life stories and pithy advice could spur them to forge a path through a challenging employment environment instead of moving back home with Mom and Dad to wait passively for an opening. “It’s not where you start that matters, it’s where you end up,” he says. And he is the living, breathing example of that belief, having grown up the fourth of ten kids in a 1500-square-foot house in Hampton, Virginia. At 14, he left home to move in with a friend and go to high school. He subsequently lived half a year in an abandoned car and another period of time spending nights undetected in a furnished model apartment. At 16 he lived in an elderly woman’s home where he slept in the tub and later on the kitchen floor. He says he grew up with “a wrong understanding of life,” so he knew “if it’s going to be, I’d have to do it.” “At 18 I kept a ledger in which I wrote down what people said that I thought was relevant, and I reinvented myself. Given my circumstances, I was lucky to find knowledgeable, helpful people who

would give me a new course. And I worked pretty hard.” His first job was a paper route when he was 12. But his defining job was the one that he began at 16: McDonald’s for 95 cents an hour. “I was so lucky to get that break to flip hamburgers, so lucky.” He began as a crew person, cleaning, opening, closing, cooking, all of it. The McDonald’s years “I was working with people who could actually teach me something.” That led to managing a McDonald’s franchise. By 21 he was supervising, and at just 23 he was asked to be a business consultant working with owners of McDonald’s restaurants. Not long after, he was in Oak Brook, Illinois, as national director of operations for North America and one of the company’s youngest directors.

McDonald’s ushered in his “love affair with business. What a great opportunity to be invited into something so huge.” Even though he left McDonald’s for other learning and earning opportunities, at 37 he came back and

bought his first McDonald’s franchise. Today he has ten, all making money and some immensely successful. “I learned much more than I gave in nearly 50 years at McDonald’s. What can hamburgers teach you? Business. And the interaction of people. McDonald’s taught me permanence. It’s so unusual today to start something and end there. We tend to think the more experiences you have, the better. But my advice is this: If you’re good at something, you may want to stay where you are. Dig deeper – it’s fertile ground. And in growing yourself right where you are, you’re a bigger catch for another company.” Mentors – finding them and becoming one He had the privilege to spend time with Ray Kroc, McDonald’s founder and one of the 20th century’s great business icons. “Ray Kroc said, ‘When you’re green you’re growing, and when you’re ripe, you rot.’” “Keith Davis, my first manager at McDonald’s, was my first mentor. Sharp as a tack, retired military. He helped provide the structure and discipline I needed. He told me to get in early and stay later, and then you have to do the best you can.” Along those lines, Tom believes “there is no better thing than to sit with someone who really knows his craft.” From that ledger he kept at 18, filling it with observations and advice from people he admired, to the present day, he still enjoys listening to and observing others so he can enrich his pool of knowledge.

But he also readily shares his experiences in business and life with others, in particular taking opportunities to talk to young people. “Most young people today don’t get enough mentoring – or it’s the wrong kind. The idea that a parent can be the greatest mentor is absolutely true. No better gift than to have concerned, caring parents. And it’s a real challenge today to have time to help them prepare for what life has to give.”

Closing thoughts He claims his biggest mistake has been to take things too seriously, thinking any one thing is more important than it is, or trying to find the perfect answer. “The ‘perfect answer’ is the one everyone will accept.” Be disciplined with your thoughts, he says. “Words mean something – every word either builds or destroys. Think thoughts that bring out the right you.”

To develop a successful business, you focus on four points: “Take great people and put them in a well-maintained facility, and you should get a well-run operation and generate increased sales revenues. The unintended result of commitment to those four is to generate profits.” The secret to success is as simple as “getting up earlier than everyone else and staying up late. All we really have to be is one step, one jump, ahead of a competitor, and all we have to do is show up and do our best work.” And he delivers this pearl for young people entering a difficult job market: “If you can’t find the job you want, take the job that’s offered to you. It may be that that ends up being the job that’s best for you.” W4

T he late Dr. Walter Lomax and his son, Bennett, founder and CEO of the Lomax Companies, respectively, addressed Chamber members and guests at a Business to Business Breakfast held this June at The Waterwheel.

The event, sponsored by the Central Bucks Family YMCA, First Savings and LaSalle University, gave the audience a glimpse into the far-ranging business interests of this innovative, hardworking and devoted family of entrepreneurs. A medical doctor from South Philly, Walter Lomax and his wife, Beverly, and their six children tapped their amazingly rich family capital to build diversified businesses that include radio station WURD, the voice of the black community. alex gorsky: J&J Credo puts needs of people first

Business to Business BreakfastSponsored by First Savings Bank

18 Who • What • Where • When

By Anne Biggs, Journalist

Citing the Johnson & Johnson credo, J&J chairman and CEO Alex Gorsky is proud that the medical devices, pharmaceuticals

and consumer products giant continues to frame its decisions on the concept of putting the people who use its products first, the employees second, the community third and the shareholders last. Speaking to Chamber members and guests at the October Business to Business Breakfast, Gorsky stated that the 1943-crafted credo is “a living, breathing document.”

“Many times when we are in a meeting, someone will say, ‘This is a credo moment.’” J&J was founded in New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 1886, during the early days of aseptic surgery. Its earliest products included antiseptic bandages, the first first-aid kits, manuals for wound care and other devices and items to support the movement toward sterile surgery and care. From there, the company grew into the world’s largest and most diversified healthcare company, developing and marketing the wide range of healthcare and consumer products for which it is known today.

Gorsky advised the high school students at the breakfast, “Find something you really love to do, or learn to love what you do, because you’ll do a lot of it. “Rarely does success come to the best and brightest as much as to those who work the hardest. Hard work leads to success, and success leads to great communities.” The event, sponsored by First Savings Bank, was held at Spring Mill Manor in Ivyland. W4

Malmark’s Tim Schuback: heading up ‘a niche within a niche’

Business to Business Breakfast

Whoever thought a story about hand bells would be so darn interesting? And that probably reflects the initial thinking of the

young man who now is leading the company into its 40th anniversary year. Tim Schuback, president of Malmark Inc. in Plumsteadville, captivated Chamber members and guests with his entertaining telling of Malmark’s story at the November Business to Business Breakfast. Founded by visionary and mechanical engineer Jacob Malta in November 1973 after he left Schulmerich Carillons in Sellersville, Malmark is one of just three companies in the world crafting English hand bells – “a niche within a niche.” Although offsite foundries cast Malmark’s bronze bells and aluminum hand chimes, the instruments are hand-engineered and -tuned to exacting specifications patented by Malta over the years and passed down to new employees by those who worked directly with the late founder. Schuback, former director of finance for the Please Touch Museum’s Memorial Hall, spent six

months working in the manufacturing area to learn the company’s processes first-hand. Heading up operations after Malta’s death three years ago, he’s now been with Malmark for five years, working enthusiastically to retain the company’s international reputation for quality and innovation while preserving the family business and bringing it strongly into its next decade. The event, held at The Warrington Country Club, was sponsored by First Savings Bank. W4

Bucks County Commissioners Rob Loughery, chair, Diane Ellis-Marseglia and Charlie Martin presented their annual report to

Chamber members and guests at a breakfast at the Waterwheel in September. Loughery described the board’s efforts to reduce the county government’s footprint using such means as investments in technology, judicious reductions in the workforce and the refinancing made possible by the county’s triple-A bond rating. An ongoing study is considering how best to use the current courthouse after the courts relocate in 2014. He also discussed VC 4 BC, an initiative to put millions of venture capital funds into the hands of Bucks County businesses. Along with urging support of county-wide anti-bullying programs, Ellis-Marseglia called on local businesses to hire women for the prison’s work-release programs and to get behind the Day of Democracy by encouraging employees to volunteer for service at the polls or for social service agencies. She also told of efforts to start a suicide task force modeled on efforts in neighboring counties, the prison drug and alcohol program start-up that inmates are asking for and new proposals to get services to the homeless. Martin’s overview began by noting that he believes St. Mary’s Hospital in Newtown and the Central Bucks School District have surpassed the county government as the largest employers in Bucks. He also reported that the Justice Center is now 60 percent complete with a projected fourth-quarter 2014 occupation date. The annual event, sponsored by Comcast, Independence Blue Cross and Wells Fargo Bank, is a program of the Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee. W4Photography by Mark Margraff, M Studios
