Yerington is the County Seat for Lyon County. Located in the Mason Valley between the Singatse and the Wassuk Mountain ranges. While mining in the area dates back to the 1800’s the town is primarily supported by the surrounding agricultural industry.
Yerington is a self proclaimed sleepy town. All of that is about to change with the help of Nevada Copper and their Pumpkin Hollow mine.
For Yerington it’s been 40 years in the making. The closure of the Anaconda mine in 1978 still looms over the town.
There have been a few false dawns and dashed hopes of a revival during the interceding decades in this region of the Silver State where mining dates back to the late 1800s.
But next year the town of little over 3,500 souls will see the opening of a new mine which within short five years could eclipse the heydays in both size and scope.
Pumpkin Hollow the only large-scale, fully-permitted copper project in North America. The mine goes into production next year with their underground mine. Development has been fast-tracked by re-engineering and it is currently under construction. The open pit mine is anticipated to commence construction in 2020 with an expected life span of 23 years.
The mine is expected to create over 300 direct jobs. in fields including mining, administration, surveying and engineering. The 300 + direct jobs will create additional indirect service jobs. Five hundred jobs for a community of 3,500 is a huge.

Pumpkin Hollow goes into production next year, but the underground mine is only the first phase of a planned Nevada copper operation four times the size.
