Why does Majorca attract tourists and how can the

harmful effects of tourism on the island be reduced?

Refer to the survey; what did visitors find most attractive? Produce 3 climate graphs- Temperatures, Rainfall, Sunshine Describe the graphs: HOW is the climate of Majorca attractive? Quote figures from the graphs. What are the attractions of Majorca? (HOMEWORK)

Draw a line graph of visitor numbers Describe this graph – changes? Time scale? What likely problems would 9m+ visitors create? Refer to the survey: what was the biggest problem tourists faced? Label the sketches ‘Developed South’ and ‘Unspoilt North’ Add a comment about the sketches – what problem do they suggest? Use ‘Majorca the bad news’ to categorise the problems: for tourists, for the environment, for

local people Produce a letter of complaint – from a tourist or a local person (HOMEWORK)

SOLUTION: A new inspection system

has been introduced…

PROBLEM: Many new hotels look ugly and don’t fit in with the

scenery here.

PROBLEM: Our hotel was dirty and noisy: there was nobody to

complain to!

SOLUTION:New laws

controlling hotel building have been passed. They must fit strict limits on

size & design
