FALL 2013 1

A new year has begun for the YCF Board, and it offers exciting opportunities for the Foundation, Yavapai College and our community. Following is an overview of some of what we are working on.

Like you, we were shocked and saddened by the deaths of our 19 Hotshots. We met July 3, just three days after the tragedy and set up a scholarship to help with post-secondary schooling expenses for the wives, fiancées, and children of the deceased along with Brendan McDonough, the surviving Hotshot. The scholarships will cover all education costs for a two-year degree at Yavapai College (YC) or equivalent dollars may be used at other schools of the recipient’s choice. Money remaining after fulfilling our commitment to survivors will be available to other students enrolled in the YC Wildland Fire Sciences program. Funds will be used only for these purposes.

We continue working to increase economic development in our community. Over the last several months, we interviewed nearly 100 community and business leaders about prospects for a YC-run business incubator. Flagstaff has a similar program that is connected with NAU and has achieved significant success helping to develop and support new businesses that have added economic diversity and new jobs to the local community. We anticipate reviewing results and recommendations from the feasibility study before year-end.

Fund-raising efforts continue for the College vineyard and winery. In May, my wife and I joined others to help plant three acres of grapevines at the Verde Valley campus, giving a two-year total of six acres of vines planted. In time the vineyard is expected to grow to 17 acres, which will be enough to supply the 3,000-case teaching winery that will be built on

campus. Construction of the winery will start later this fall and is expected to be ready for use for the start of the 2014-15 school year. Meanwhile, students are already enrolled in the two-year viticulture and enology degree program. This is another economic development activity that is meeting a rapidly growing need for a trained workforce in the award-winning Arizona wine industry.

With the start of a new year, we welcomed five newly elected members to the Board. With their diverse backgrounds and accomplishments, the Board is enhanced with the addition of Dr. Russ Balda, Jim Messerschmitt, Joe VanBourgondien, Angela Walker-Weber and Dave Wilhelmsen.

If you have not made a donation to the Hotshots Scholarship Fund, I encourage you to join the hundreds of donors who have contributed so far. And, of course, we welcome donations in support of any other YC educational program.

Dear Friends:

The Yavapai College Advancement Department and Foun-dation enjoyed another banner year in support of Yavapai College (YC) education programs and community services. This success is a direct result of the hundreds of generous donors whose names appear on pages 7-11 and the tireless work of Foundation staff and volunteers who care so much about Yavapai College. Thank you!

The Grants Department, under the leadership of Marcia Jacobson, again secured major funding for new and exist-ing YC programs. Among the many funded grants during the year, two stood out: 1) a $1.87 million federal grant to develop new technical programs to help fulfill the state’s energy industry workforce needs, and; 2) a $1.25 million, five-year grant to fund its Veterans Upward Bound (VUB)-TRiO program for qualified veterans in Northern Arizona. Yavapai College is one of just 51 colleges out of hundreds of applicants in the country to receive this grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

The Foundation also made impressive progress again last year. Eleven new Legacy League members joined and six new endowed student scholarships were established. The YCF endowment pipeline grew by an astonishing $5,632,876. Additionally, $836,674 was raised for YC pro-grams and $163,861 toward the Southwest Wine Center Capital Campaign, with groundbreaking on the new aca-demic winery scheduled for later this fall.

Fiscal year 2013-2014 is now underway, and I am very pleased to share details about a new program under the Advancement Division that will contribute significantly to maintaining and improving the quality of life in Yavapai County.

Despite signs that some segments of the economy may be improving, a recent economic report shows that Yavapai County is near the bottom nationally in economic strength and annual average wage. POLICOM Corporation, an independent economic research firm that specializes in analyzing local and state economies, ranks Yavapai County 361st out of 366 similar areas in economic strength, due primarily to lack of economic diversity.

Spurred by this finding, we’re working with Yavapai County business, civic and educational leaders to ensure a sus-tainable economic future for the county. Together we’re building a new Regional Economic Development Center (REDC) that will maintain offices on both the Verde Valley and Prescott campuses of YC. The REDC will give Yavapai County businesses two robust local shops to help them de-velop their workforces and connect with business prospects from outside the region.

The new REDC director, Alexandria Wright, has been hired. Alexandria has extensive background and experience with regional economic development and workforce train-ing, and she will be completing her doctorate in Economics policy at Northern Arizona University this spring. Alexan-dria will serve as the primary liaison for Yavapai College with all public and private regional economic development organizations in Yavapai County and will oversee the Small Business Development Center (SBDC).

It’s worth noting that we’re far from alone in emphasiz-ing this role for the College. “All of those who educate and prepare people for employment opportunities are involved in economic development,” writes Geary M. Maiuri, associ-ate dean, business administration for Macomb Community College. “Community colleges are uniquely positioned by virtue of their local base and their very charters to assist their communities in terms of growth, prosperity, and quality of life. A well-educated and trained work force can assist a community in its ability to attract new business investment and, more important, can assist in the retention and expansion of existing business and industry.”

As new businesses locate in Yavapai County and existing businesses grow and expand, we can expect that their char-itable investments in Yavapai College also will grow in sup-port of new educational and workforce training programs. This new paradigm of “Business Philanthropy” holds great promise, and we are excited about doing everything in our power to garner its full potential for Yavapai College.

FALL 2013 3

The Verde Valley community gathered at the Yavapai College Verde campus on September 10 for a special ceremony to name the campus’

distinctive pavilion for local legend Charles “Chuck” Mabery. Mabery, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 86, was instrumental in establishing the Verde campus and served on the YC Board of Governors from 1972 to 1977. He was the recipient of the College's first honorary degree in May 2000.

Numerous Mabery family members were among the guests at the September naming ceremony, which was held in conjunction with the District Governing Board’s September meeting. The Mabery family previously created the Mabery Legacy Scholarship to benefit deserving students from the Verde Valley pursuing their goal of higher education at Yavapai College.

In addition to his service to Yavapai College, Chuck’s contributions to the betterment of Cottonwood and the Verde Valley were well known. As the Verde Independent reported, “He was one of the early visionaries of Cottonwood, serving on boards throughout the community, including the Verde Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Cottonwood Progressive Association, both precursors to the Cottonwood Chamber. He served eight years as co-chairman of the Cottonwood Christmas parade, later serving as its Grand Marshal, and was named VVCC 'Man of the Year' in 1965.”

JCF Health Care Scholars ProgramJewish Community Foundation Trustees Dr. Seymour Rife (left) and Phyllis Robinson (right) present personalized gifts to 2013 JCF Healthcare Scholarship recipients Andrew Meyers and Ashley Carter at a recent reception for this year’s 14 Healthcare Scholarship recipients. Twelve scholarships were provided by the Jewish Community Foundation of Prescott and two by the Margaret T. Morris Foundation. Additional funding is being provided by the Yavapai Regional Medical Center. The scholarship program now has 25 students enrolled at the College, including 11 students who received the JCF scholarship last year.

Mabery came to Cottonwood in 1960 and undertook various business ventures in the Verde Valley, including ownership of a Western Auto Store, working for the Verde Independent, serving as an insurance-real estate agent and managing Yavapai Title. In 1994 the Mabery family created the Blazin’ M Ranch Old West Dinner Show on the family’s Cottonwood farm where Chuck entertained guests as emcee and show lead singer until his retirement in 2008.

T he deadly Yarnell Hill fire that killed 19 firefighters in Arizona on June 30 touched Yavapai College (YC) in many ways, and the College community

responded with both immediate and long-term assistance.

The nation’s deadliest wildland fire in 80 years also forced the evacuation of two communities south of Prescott. As part of an agreement with the Red Cross, the organization quickly set up its primary evacuation center on the YC Prescott campus, and some 50 evacuees registered at the college the evening of June 30.

The loss of 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots team members touched the entire community, including the Yavapai College family. Some of the fallen firefighters were relatives and friends of College employees, and many of the Hotshots had attended Yavapai College.

“As members of a fairly small community, we know that many of you have been touched by the tragic loss of life as a result of this fire,” College President Dr. Penny Wills noted in one of a series of updates to employees at the time of the tragedy. “Our thoughts and prayers are with

the families, friends and loved ones of the courageous fire fighters who lost their lives responding to this threat. They will be remembered.”

While helping with the immediate needs of evacuees, College administration and employees realized that long-term assistance was needed, as well. Within days of the disaster, Yavapai College and the YC Foundation created and announced a scholarship fund for the children, spouses, fiancées and the lone surviving member of the Granite Mountain Hotshots—30 people in all.

“This is a long-term commitment that is very personal for us,” said Steve Walker, the Yavapai College vice president of advancement. “Many of the team members were students at Yavapai College, and some were in our fire science program. We knew them and we respected them. Now we honor them.”

The Granite Mountain Hotshots Scholarship Fund is set up to provide scholarships for the family members’ community college education needs. The Yavapai College Foundation will manage the scholarship fund. As of the

end of August, donations to the scholarship fund had reached $176,000, including both large and small donations (see sidebar story on page 6).

Walker said that two-year scholarships will be available for attending Yavapai College, or the equivalent amount will be portable to any college the individual chooses to attend.

People can donate to the scholarship fund online at www.yc.edu/hotshots, by calling the Yavapai College Foundation at 928-776-2025 or by mailing a donation to Yavapai College Foundation, 1100 E. Sheldon St., Prescott, AZ 86301.

Granite Mountain Hotshots Scholarship Fund FAQWho is eligible to use the scholarship fund? Those eligible include 14 children (two unborn) of the 19 fallen firefighters, 13 spouses and Brendan McDonough, the surviving member of the Granite Mountain Hotshots team.

Will the families be eligible for both YCF scholarship funds and state funds?

An Arizona State statute provides children and spouses of fallen first responders with a tuition waiver if they choose to attend an Arizona university or community college. For any eligible recipient who decides to attend YC on the tuition waiver, we will fill any gap in financial need with regards to textbooks, fees, testing, specialized equipment, etc. As an alternative, if they choose to pursue educational opportunities someplace other than at YC, a scholarship grant in the amount equivalent to two years of tuition at YC (calculated at the time the recipient would have been a freshman here) would be available to use at another school or vocational program—the “portable” aspect of our fund.

Are other organizations raising funds for the higher education needs of the families of the Hotshots?

Yes, other organizations are raising funds for this purpose. We’ll make sure that our scholarship fund is used to maximize the higher education benefit for those eligible. That’s the security of giving to an organization whose job it is to manage scholarship funds.

Is the Foundation taking an administrative fee on donations to the Granite Mountain Hotshots Scholarship fund?

No. The Yavapai College Foundation and the College will absorb all administrative costs needed to administer this fund over the coming decades.

“Our hope is that the scholarship fund would grow large enough to allow us to offer four-year scholarships as needed,” Walker noted. “This is our long-term commitment to these families.”

Once the higher education needs of the families are met, any additional funds in the Granite Mountain Hotshots Scholarship Fund will be used to provide scholarships for students in the College’s Wildland Fire Sciences Program.

“It’s going to take a while for our community to recover from this tragedy,” Dr. Wills said. “Yavapai College has a responsibility and a need to help because of our close relationship with the firefighters and our unique, wide-ranging role in the community. We will continue to help with the healing process, in ways consistent with our strengths, long after all the news crews have left town.”

Third Grader Makes a ‘Stand’ for Scholarship Fund

Donations to the Granite Mountain Hotshots Scholarship Fund have come from a wide range of sources. Among them is a donation from Family Enrichment Center alum Grace Shamber. Shown here with Yavapai College President Dr. Penny Wills, Grace generously donated over $500 that she raised in just over two hours from her neighborhood lemonade stand.

The Abia Judd third grader followed her giving effort with a “thank you” letter to supporters: “Together, we raised $501.23 for Yavapai College Scholarship Fund for the Hotshot families. I took the money we raised to the college today! They were very thankful to have the money to be able to help kids of the Hotshots when they’re ready to go to college!”

Now, that’s an amazing Grace.

The Yavapai College Foundation (YCF) held its 2013 Annual Meeting on May 8 on the stage of the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center (YCPAC).

Foundation Executive Director Steve Walker recognized three outgoing YCF Board members for their outstanding service.

Martin Gottlieb (2010-2013), with his quiet diplomacy, helped secure financial support for College programs and scholarships that will impact students for years to come. One of his most noteworthy accomplishments was his work to help plan and find funding for the Jewish Community Foundation

Healthcare Scholars Program at Yavapai College (YC), the largest scholarship program in YC history. Additionally, Martin helped establish and build the Performing Arts Charitable Endowment (PACE) and was instrumental in bringing to YCPAC such world-class artists as Yitzhak Perlman, the Moscow State Symphony and comedian Bill Cosby.

Ernie Jones (2003-2013), through his leadership role as President of the Yavapai-Prescott Indian Tribe (YPIT), helped strengthen relationships between the Tribe and College significantly. A Yavapai College alumnus himself, Ernie and his wife Janet took a special interest in Yavapai College athletics,

serving on the Roughrider Board for many years. With funding support from YPIT, he established the first-ever YCF endowed scholarship fund for student athletes. Ernie was also instrumental in facilitating major gifts from YPIT for the capital campaign to build the Family Enrichment Center, event sponsorships for the YCPAC, construction of Phase 4 of the Sculpture Garden and the Literary Southwest Speakers Series.

Oren Thompson (2003-2013) has been a major positive force for YCF, serving as Foundation President from 2007 to 2008. During his tenure as President, YCF resurrected a dormant capital campaign to successfully raise $2,200,000 to build the Del E. Webb Family Enrichment Center, on time and

under budget. Prior to his service on the YCF Board, Oren was instrumental in getting the year 2000 YC capital bond ballot measure, totaling $69,500,000, passed by an almost 2-to-1 margin.

Also honored were individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in support of YC educational programs and community services. Awardees received beautiful hand-carved Arizona bird sculptures, created by renowned wood carver and YCF member Bill Neeley.

The YCF Stewardship Award was presented to Mike Kervin, YC District Grounds Supervisor. Mike has served YC in this capacity for 18 years. Thanks to his vision and the outstanding skills and work ethic of his staff, the campuses of YC throughout the county are beautiful and welcoming. “This award is in recognition for the special work Mike has accomplished in partnership with the YCF Friends of Art in the Sculpture Garden,” Walker noted. “The Garden is one of the most beautiful places in Yavapai County and has been featured on the pages of Sunset Magazine and Highroads, the magazine of AAA. This serene place is thanks in large part to the ideas and great work of Mike Kervin and his staff.”

The YCF Philanthropy Award was presented to Caduceus Cellars and its owners, Maynard and Jennifer Keenan. Chris Turner, Caduceus vineyard manager, accepted the award on their behalf. Since the onset of planning for the College’s Viticulture and Enology Program almost four years ago, Maynard and Caduceus Cellars have been instrumental in helping develop the vision, working out the myriad program details, and more recently raising awareness and money to establish the Southwest Wine Center at Yavapai College. “I don’t think that any one thing was more significant to get the ball really rolling than Maynard stepping up, with his own money and labor, to plant the first acre of negra amaro grape vines on the YC Verde Valley campus,” Walker said. “This small vineyard, now in its third growing season, stands tall as a reminder that a total of 17 acres of vines will be planted and an academic winery built for YC students interested in a career in this burgeoning industry.”

The YCF Leadership Award was presented to YC Dean of Career and Technical Programs and Chino Valley and Prescott Valley campuses John Morgan. Among his many accomplishments has been the establishment of the YC Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC) at the Prescott Airpark. “With yeoman support from the YC facilities department over the course of one short summer, John transformed that 108,000-square-foot shell of a building into a highly functioning center,” Walker said. “John consolidated YC technical programs from back rooms and garages around the district into what is widely considered the best technical education center in the State of Arizona.” John was also instrumental in helping establish the Mountain Institute, Joint Technical Education District with area high schools and has worked seamlessly with Mountain Institute leaders to build superior programs for these students at CTEC. Other programs that were either started or have grown significantly under John’s leadership include welding, gunsmithing, mining technology, auto

Did you know that many of Yavapai County's most creative and academically gifted students lack the financial resources to attend Yavapai College (YC) and, therefore, consider higher education to be completely out of reach?

The rising costs of an education, coupled with diminished state and federal financial aid resources, make financing college a serious concern for many potential degree-seeking and career and technical education students.

The College makes every effort to provide scholarship support that can make a tremendous difference in a future teacher's, artist's, executive's, or scholar's life. More than 100 endowed scholarship funds have already been established at YC by individuals, businesses, and local civic organizations. But many more scholarships are needed urgently.

Endowing a fund for student support is one of the most distinguished and lasting forms of philanthropy, highlighting the scholarship’s namesake while ensuring the continued support of students far into the future.

No fixed formula governs the structuring of a gift. With the creation today of an initial endowed gift, a donor and/or his or her estate can add to the fund or redirect the purpose of the fund in the future. A gift may comprise appreciated securities, real estate, trust instruments, or a combination of devices that best suits the donor’s needs. While the profile and precise aspects of a gift are matters of the donor's choosing, the Yavapai College Foundation staff can assist in structuring a gift to take maximum advantage of charitable tax benefits.

The family of Ron Ross created the Ross Arcair Scholarship to benefit deserving students who demonstrate grit, gumption and good faith in pursuing technical studies. Although not a particularly good student himself, Ron’s life and career (from the founding days of Arcair with his father, inventor, C.A. “Pete” Ross, Sr.) were marked by dogged determination and pursuit of his goals.

The Arcair torch, used by the Yavapai College welding program, grew from a home basement operation (with the Ross kids helping their father in production) to international sales and manufacturing, before the company was sold to Air Products in 1968.

An important part of Ron’s philosophy was, “Work smart, not hard.” He was an expert fisherman and sailor, a capable carpenter, darn-good welder and a “run for your life” John Deere and Caterpillar operator, who lived and breathed to buy and sell land. He married his high school sweetheart, Nadean, and they worked together raising a family whose members believe it’s important to make a big difference through giving back.

All students enrolled in technical studies at Yavapai College are eligible for the Ross Arcair Scholarship, with preference going to students who reside in the Verde Valley or Sedona.

Three generations of the Ross family have benefitted through coursework at Yavapai College, from paralegal to real estate, construction to computer science, filmmaking to graphic design.

Friends of YC Art (FRIENDS) Phase IV of the Yavapai College Sculpture Garden has been completed. The newest phase was unveiled at the “Affaire in the Garden,” the annual meeting and fundraiser for YC art programs and the Sculpture Garden. Amid celebrations of prior year accomplishments, guests enjoyed music, fine

Arizona wines and the surrounding beauty of the Garden.

FRIENDS are envisioning the next phases of the Sculpture Garden. Phases V and VI will see the Garden grow through the riparian area, up the bank on the other side of the creek and to the street bordering the Garden on its west side.

Greater Verde Valley Chapter The Chapter held a very successful third annual “Art, Wine & Dine in the Verde Country-side” fundraiser last October, our most successful one so far. More than 200 guests enjoyed wine tasting, a silent auction, live music and a gourmet meal paired with local wines. Proceeds from the event benefited the Southwest Wine Center capital campaign.

In May, the Chapter assisted once again with the Plant-A-Vine event. Many local and regional volunteers and dignitaries as-sisted with planting more than 1,200 vines in a few hours.

In addition, the Chapter awarded 15 scholarships for the year. At a Donor/Recipient Recognition event, two of the recipients spoke to express their gratitude for the significant impact the scholar-ships provided in reaching their academic and career goals.

The Friends of the Family Enrichment Center (FOFEC) had a busy first year. In fall 2012, FOFEC celebrated the 5th anniversary of the Del E. Webb Family Enrichment Center (FEC) with an open house and tours of the center. FOFEC also created a video to promote the Family Enrichment Center’s participation, through the Prescott Sunrise Lions Club, in the Arizona Tax Credit

Program, which generated $16,000. The 4th annual Framing the Future Luncheon and Children’s Art Auction was held in March, raising approximately $19,000 for the FEC. Planning is underway for a special event in the YC Sculpture Garden on September 24 to celebrate FOFEC’S first year efforts.

This coming year, FOFEC will work to build the FEC Endowment Fund, with a vision towards sustainability for the FEC and the valuable resources it provides to families, students and the community.

The YCF Scholarship Committee The Scholarship Committee hosted the third annual Donor/Recipient Reception in April. This event provided an opportunity for scholarship recipients and donors to meet. Several scholarship recipients shared heartfelt testimonials about how important it was for them to receive their scholarship, while other scholarship recipients provided wonderful musical performances.

Scholarships from more than 110 endowed funds benefit hundreds of YC students each year, with almost $2 million awarded to deserving undergraduates over the last two decades. These funds have provided a promising future to many students who otherwise would not have had the means to pursue their dreams of success.

Friends of the Library (FOL) Celebrating their first annual meeting, the Friends

of the Library (FOL), Prescott Campus, invited their members to attend “Romancing the Stone - the Lure of Turquoise.” This luncheon event featured a program by Keith Horst, professor of Lapidary at Yavapai College. A display of raw and polished turquoise plus many books on turquoise fascinated guests, who were encouraged to wear turquoise to the event.

During the year, FOL membership pins were designed with the FOL logo (shown above), which depicts the dual role of libraries providing both print and electronic materials. Participation in the Farmers Market during the summer provided an opportunity for book sales and meeting the public to assure them that the public is always welcome at the YC Library, where the Book Sale Room is open the same hours as the Library. Several special book sales were held throughout the year at the Book Sale Room, including during National Friends of the Library Week, which attracted an increase in buyers. The Friends assisted the Library with their costumed and informational Welcome Back Students special event and also the National Library Week celebration.

Friends of Music (FOM) The Friends of Music (FOM) are helping to keep the Music Department strong by providing scholarship assistance to outstanding student musicians. For example, the ever-popular “Pocket Change” program has supported numerous scholarship awards. This year, the instrumental “Holiday Hits” concert and the

vocal “Gospel Choir” concert will be co-sponsored by the Friends of Music and the Music Department, with proceeds going directly to student scholarships. Make time to enjoy any of the Music Department programs.
