Welcome to the Yachting.vg monthly magazine. The pri-

mary purpose of this magazine is to present yachts for brokerage and yachts for charter from clients using our

yachting solutions. In order to provide them with a com-petitive advantage, we decided to integrate our online plat-

form called The Yachting Network with the Adobe inDe-sign workflow. The end result being that all the listings from

clients using our online yachting solutions are as well included in our monthly magazines. It brings them maximum exposure

as well as brand recognition. We believe that there is still a need for a printed version to allow readers to be able to read offline while traveling for example. Furthermore, it allows our clients to reach potential buyers who are not always willing to stay a long time in front of a computer screen in order to review luxury yachts for sale or charter. A printed version still has its charm and provides added value to our clients.

The Yachting Network has local websites in all eu-ropean countries.

We hope you will enjoy reading every month our magazines. In the following months, eve-ry site part of The Yachting Network will be integrated in the Adobe Indesign workflow in order to generate monthly magazines add-ing again some exposure and visibility to our clients listings.

The architecture of our platform now comes full circle. We are able to provide to all clients using our yachting and real estate solutions an integrated platform able to deliver online and offline visibility through very efficient web services.

Furthemore, our complete integration to over 15 social networks through APIs allows clients using our solutions to post automati-cally listings updates on their social media accounts without extra work.

We believe that a tight integration between the web sites of our clients running one of

our yachting solutions and social networks and coupled with a printed version will bring them a very powerful platform to increase the visibility of their listings.

Unlike third party listing sites specializing in yachting, clients list their yachts only once on their websites in our yachting solutions and then syndication takes place. It insures that their domain name and web site is the place where all listings are managed, indexed first by search engines and where all inbound traffic goes back to when syndicated to other sites.

Over time, this strategy will bring continuous lead generation at a fraction of the cost spent on multiple third party listing sites where list-ings are lost in the crowd.

Stylish EventsFrom 18 to 23rd May 2011, Sanctuary Cove Inter-national Boat Show opens. The four-day event has at-tracted guests from Asia, Af-rica and the US and features a dedicated ‘Superyacht Australia’ pavilion as well as the 31.5m, Black Pearl and the 37.1m Masteka 2 among the vessels moored in the harbour. On Friday, the Australian Marine Industry Breakfast features Monte Carlo Yachts Carla Dema-ria who will talk about New Trends and New Challenges for the Boating Industry.

The MYBA Char-ter Show 2011 a success. MYBA has reported excel-lent feedback from its recent charter show in Genoa. The event - held between 2 and 6 May across Marina Molo Vecchio, Aquarium Quay and Marina Fiera - hosted 79 yachts, including a num-ber of new builds, and over 350 brokers. The event saw another collaboration be-tween the organisers and Yacht Carbon Offset to re-duce the carbon footprint of the show. The 2012 will be held between 30 April and 4 May 2012.

Establishing an efficient SOCIAL MEDIA marketing strategy becomes now a reality for yacht brokerage and yacht charter companies. When establishing the company marketing strat-egy, several key indicators must be closely watched. As well, deciding the direction of the data flow between the company and third party sites can become costly in terms of advertising budget without bringing long term traffic.

The most costly decision a mar-keting or sales manager will take when implementing a marketing strategy will be to rely entirely on third party websites to ac-quire new contacts and promote the yacht listings. This decision is mostly taken due to the appar-ent easy setup and maintenance third party listing sites seem to provide. However, when analyz-

ing carefully the features pro-vided, as well as the possibility to create inbound traffic to the company’s website or expand the reach to social networks, it does not appear anymore as a cost effective solution in a long term strategyh. All third party listings sites rely on traffic to

their sites in order to be able to charge yacht brokerage and yacht charter firms. Thus, they will most of the time prevent this traffic to leave their site unless it goes to a paid advertisement. The data flow of the listings be-tween the company’s website and the outside world must be carefully evaluated. The suc-cess in establishing a long term

approach is to consider, as the central point, the company’s website. ie the single point of entry for all listings should be your website. Then, syndication to third party listings websites specializing in the yachting and to social network will take place. This data flow will allow you to generate inbound traffic back to your site and not to other sites.

You will have the control over the data provided to the external sites. Contacts and leads com-ing to your site once will most likely come back to your site on a regular basis. A powerful out-bound strategy for the listings is to target all available social net-work and document or images

sharing sites. Through APIs, you can automate the posting of list-ings information and brochure to a large array of sites which are not used by third party listings websites to avoid loosing traffic.Nowadays, you can maximize your exposure on social net-works relatively easily by select-ing a yachting solution already integrating the APIs to post au-

tomatically. Furthermore, third party listings websites will not have any incentives to integrate your listings with social net-works or other sites in order to keep the traffic on their site. You must put in place a well tought-out strategy which will syndi-cate listings to generic listings sites. (Olx, Oddle, Vast...), third party listings sites specializing in yachting through the openma-rine.org initiative for example: It allows you to generate a stand-ard xml feed and post it to sev-eral sites through a subscription. Then, post the listings to your fa-cebook and twitter account. We

went further in the integration of our yachting solutions with a large array of APIs. Clients using our yachting solutions have their listings posted automatically to Flickr, Picasa, Wordpress, Blogger, Olx, Oddle, Vast, Open-marine. Then, PDF brochures generated are posted to Issuu, Scribd, Slideshare, Docstoc ex-panding the reach and search engines indexing. And a new service launched this month is through the magazines listing all the yachts from our clients and generated in 3 versions: print on demand version, electronic version and ipad version. The goal in creating your marketing strategy is not to get linked to a

single third party listings web-site where they will dictate their marketing strategy to you and make it very difficult for you to reach potentials clients through all available social medias. In a long term strategy, all inbound traffic must go back to your site. This way, if you decide to stop listing on a particular third par-ty listings website, most of the traffic will still flow to your site through the other channels. On the other hand, if you stricly list on third party sites, the day you stop paying them, you “disap-pear“ from the internet world...

The Hoek Design celebrates silver jubilee in style Hoek Design in the Netherlands will celebrate its 25th anniversary in August 2011. The leading design and naval architecture office is still run by its founder, Andre Hoek, who today shares the boards with a range of specialists from across the spectrum of luxury sailing and motoryachts. The company will mark its silver jubilee in style by hosting a special Hoek Design Cup event within the Superyacht Cup in Palma in June. Eight superyachts designed by Hoek Design have already agreed to participate and more are expected to confirm in the coming weeks.

After graduating as a naval architect, Andre Hoek started his design career in 1979 with C@C Yachts in Toronto. The Hoek Design office was officially opened in August 1986 and three years later moved to its current location in

a spectacular 16th century building in Edam, a Dutch city famous for its cheese and archi-tecture. The design team consists of ten naval architects, hydrodynamicists, structural engi-neers, interior designers and stylists.

Andre now shares the office helm with part-ner and technical director Ruurt Meulemans. The present portfolio of Hoek Design covers a wide variety of design work, from classic to modern styled sailing and motoryachts for both cruising and racing. Current new pro-jects include a 30 ft daysailer, a 66 ft daysailer, a 148 ft ketch, a 158 ft sloop, a 200 ft sloop and two motoryachts.

The first years of Hoek Design concentrat-ed on the Dutch market for traditional gaff rigged sailing yachts with leeboards, yachts that Andre had raced successfully as Dutch open champion in various classes. While the early design work focused on optimising the performance of existing yachts, new designs were soon being made, tank tested and wind tunnel tested, then optimised by an in-house developed velocity prediction program.

VIs are an archipelago comprising hundreds of small is-lands and cays situated between Puerto Rico and the Lee-ward Islands. The eastern half is a British dependency, while the western part is US territory. The largest British

islands are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost van Dyke and An-egada, the latter being slightly set apart, while the former

are grouped together around the Sir Francis Drake channel. The Virgins are perfect cruising ground - scenically beautiful, with countless

bays, coves and anchorages, the waters sheltered from the strong trade winds and ocean swells. The British Virgins are now the largest bareboat charter centre in the world. The BVI uses the American buoyage system, so red buoys mark the starboard side upon approach from the sea.

What really sets the BVI apart is that, although not a particularly large area, one can cruise them for years and still discover new spots to explore every time. That’s one of the reasons why those islands have become so popular among sailors.

If you are leaving from the BVI, you are probably doing so from some-where on the south shore of Tortola: either Road Town, Nanny Cay or Fat Hog Bay. In any case, on your first day, you will probably cast off by the end of the morning after tidying up provisioning and various odds and ends. Therefore, you will be better off going for a short sail and head toward Peter Island or Cooper Island. On the first day, you do not want to sail too much: What you want is get off the marina and go anchor or moor, settle down and take your marks before doing more serious sailing. Peter is a broad reach from any of the departure point, and Cooper is a beam reach. About Cooper: There is fabulous snorkeling south at Cistern Point (moor-ing lines for dinghy only) and on the northern reef. The restaurant is very

BVI residents are amongst the most affluent in the Eastern Caribbean. Because of this, a large number of residents from other Caribbean islands work there.

Even though the British Virgin Islands (BVI) are under the British flag, the U.S. dollar is the official currency. The island is home to many offshore companies that do business worldwide.

When sailing past Peter and Salt Islands on your way to Cooper, you’ll see a large, high rock formation to your starboard side called Dead Chest Island.

Tips on mooring ball “reservation etiquette” for uninitiated bareboat sailors. : Once a mooring ball has a dinghy tied on, it has effectively been reserved regardless of the size of the vessel tied to it. The presence of a dinghy is a clear indicator that the dinghy owner intends to return for the evening. By design, the moorings system is offered on a first come, first served basis. A dinghy is a boat and subject to the same fees as any other boat regardless of size.

fish in BVI waters. Catching lobster, spearfishing and collect-ing live shells is prohibited. No jet-skis are allowed to be used

in BVI waters.

nice. There are mooring balls there. We strongly sug-gest you do not try to anchor at Cooper. The holdings are not good at all and it can become a dangerous an-chorage. Marina Cay, a pretty anchorage off Scrub Is-land. From Peter Island, it’s about 10NM. From Coop-er, it’s about 5.5NM. If you left from Peter, Cooper will be an excellent lunch/snorkeling stop. Grab a moor-ing ball, they are free if you not staying overnight.

Marina Cay is a lovely little island, with plenty of mooring balls, a nice open restaurant and a tiny beach. Just watch the approach around the marker showing the large reef surrounding the island. If you have to anchor, do so either along the inside of the south part of the reef, or behind the north part of it. It’s not deep and holdings are good. You can get water and fuel there too.

The snorkeling is nice along the reef of Great Cama-noe, slightly west of Marina Cay.

If moorings are full, go across to Trellis Bay, a very protected anchorage with moorings balls.

Virgin Gorda North Sound

Total distance: about 13NM to Mosquito Island. Here, you will be beating all the way no matter what, so this one is a fairly long leg. Leave early to make the Sound by 1500 and make sure to get a mooring ball. If it is the high season or a holiday, that ETA is the latest we recommend. On your way up there, you have 2 pos-sible stops:

- The famous Baths at the southern point of VG with the mysterious boulder rocks, fabulous snorkeling, and intriguing caves.- Mountain Point, the NW tip of VG, with great snor-

keling, but slightly tricky anchoring. So check your charts.

Whatever course you’re following, if you are be-calmed south of the Dogs, you will often find more wind if hugging the west coast of V.G., all the way from the Baths to Mountain Point. Just watch for a barely emerging rock breaking out due west of Coli-son Point, north of Spanish Town.When entering the North Gorda Sound, you have to be very careful. Do not attempt to pass between Mos-quito Island and V.G., and do not shoot straight for the Sound after rounding Mosquito: You would be go-ing straight to the reefs! Enter only between the green and red buoys (remember, Red-Right-Returning?) be-tween Prickly Pear and Colauhoun Reef as there are big treacherous reefs at the entrance and all around. If I enter under sail, I also turn on my engine at this point and keep the main up, as a routine matter of safety to navigate between those reefs.

After passing the last buoy though, you can reward yourself with a couple of exhilarating tacks inside the Sound, where it is always windy with flat waters.

Grab a ball either off Vixen Point at Prickly Pear, or in front of the Bitter End resort. The south part of the anchorage, along with Biras Creek is pretty hot as it gets no air. If you want a cooler temperature, moor on the north side of the anchorage (left side when facing the resort) or even off Saba Rock.

If you have to anchor, try to find room along Prickley Pear’s south side or off Saba Rock, where the depth can be manageable. Other areas are too deep unless you have 200 feet of chain.

There is plenty to do in the Sound.
